In Celebration of International Haiku Day 2022: Haiku Inspired by due South

Summary:

The title is the summary.

Notes:

The library where I am a librarian had staff write haiku as a celebration of International Haiku Day on April 17th (and as for why the17th: it's because haiku is three lines consisting of a line of 5 syllables, then a line of 7 syllables, and then another line of 5 syllables...and 5 + 7 + 5 equals 17). Fangirl that I am, I looked back through my decade of writing dS fic and took that as my inspiration to write this fic-based haiku assemblage whose fannish meaning wouldn't be recognized as such at work.

Work Text:

In a Chicago
apartment late at night, feel
the "El" train's passing.

Their duet has been
like swordplay: thrust, parry, and
retreat, then advance.

In their dreams there are
things they know only in sleep,
awake become dumb.

Their waking lives are
more wildly bizarre than is
their night-time dreamscape.

Traverse the ice fields.
Aurora borealis.
Beware: crevasses.

There is everything
cold to win and warm to win.
Let cold and warm in.

Ask me to the dance.
Ask me in Inuktitut.
Say "mumirlu'u".

Dansez avec moi.
Dance with me. Two languages,
two solitudes meet.
