Darla and the Pregnancy Tests

Summary:

He basically skips up to the counter and grins at Darla, sweet Darla that has been working at this same Pharmacy for 10 years, she was there when he got his first pregnancy test, when he was scared about what Lassie would think.

Work Text:

Shawn Spencer grins as he walks through the CVS and towards the back Pharmacy section. While the twins are only a year old he can’t help but be excited at the possibility of being pregnant again. When he told Lassie that he was hoping for another kid, it wasn’t just a ploy to get him to have sex with him, even if it did work amazingly. He doesn’t think Lassie even realized that he stopped taking his birth control, actually he never started using it again after Henry and Jebediah were born.

He basically skips up to the counter and grins at Darla, sweet Darla that has been working at this same Pharmacy for 10 years, she was there when he got his first pregnancy test, when he was scared about what Lassie would think. Then he came back and grinned to Darla, 3 months later and announced they were naming the baby Caleb because he just knew it was a boy. Darla hadn’t recognized him, but she smiled nonetheless.

She was there again when he walked in 2 years later and asked for another pregnancy test, this time he wasn’t nervous, he was just excited if not more than he is now. Darla grinned at him, this time she had recognized him. They named this baby Alisha and Darla said she loved that name.

A few months after Alisha was born Shawn came back with a prescription for Birth Control and Darla laughed asking if his husband had finally had enough. Shawn laughed and said his husband says they have three children counting Shawn. Then Shawn came in frequently for his Birth Control medicine.

Two years later Shawn comes in for another test, happy as can be. He comes back and explains to Darla that they’re having a third child, for real this time. Darla smiles wide, she loves her job.

But then Shawn comes in two weeks later asking for his prescription, Darla frowns as she searches for it in the system. Cytotec. No wonder Shawn looks close to tears, they must’ve lost the baby. He has a bruise the size of Texas on his face. She quietly asks if his husband, Lassie Shawn calls him, did this to him. Shawn gasps, says he would never, he was kidnapped working with the Police to solve a murder. Darla nods like she understands, but she trusts Shawn and if he says his husband isn’t behind this, then he isn't.

He comes back in again for his birth control three weeks later, face healed and with a sad smile.

After about 2 years Shawn stopped coming in until one day a month later he walked in with a man. The man was in a suit, his badge proudly hanging on his belt loop as he frowned looking around the store. But when Darla overhears Shawn calling him Lassie, she understands that this is the husband. Shawn waves Lassie off and winks at Darla as he asks for his prescription.

It takes her about 30 seconds to realize that Shawn is actually asking for another pregnancy test. What does this make it? Three children? She checks him out and puts the test in a bag, grins as she says, “Here’s your medication.” Shawn comes back again 3 weeks later with the biggest smile she has ever seen, hands her an ultrasound where you can distinctly see two babies. She gasps, it’s twins.

She doesn’t see Shawn again, not even to get birth control and if her calculations are correct he should’ve been back 6 months ago. She’s worried about him, but just as she’s about to break patient confidentiality and look up his phone number he waltzes in with the biggest smile on his face.

“Shawn Spencer!” Darla almost hollers, “Where have you been!”

So yes, Shawn is excited to be getting a pregnancy test, from his favorite Pharmacy Tech. Except now he realizes that he hasn’t seen her since he told her about Henry and Jebediah almost two years ago. So when she yells at him, he doesn’t expect anything less.

“Uh, Darla. How’s my favorite Pharmacist?”

“Don’t give me that look Shawn Spencer, you haven’t been here in ages!”

Shawn leaned over the counter and grinned, “It’s been crazy, you know. With the Twins. Wanna see?”

Darla sighs and acts put out, but in reality she would very much like to see pictures of the twins. Shawn shows her pictures from after they were born and videos of them learning to crawl. Henry, older by 10 minutes Shawn says, took his first steps yesterday.

“I suppose you’re here for your birth control?” Darla asks once Shawn puts his phone away.

Shawn stands up straight and smirks, “Me? Birth control? Come on Darla, you know better than this.”

She looks wide eyed up at him, “A Pregnancy Test?”

“Yep.” He says popping the P.

“What does that make? 5?”

“If I’m preggo, absolutely.”

“Never have you come in here, got a pregnancy test and it be negative.”

Shawn grinned again.

“I believe you Darla, I definitely think that I’m pregnant.”

Darla hands Shawn the bag with the test in it, grabbing Shawn’s hand in the process.

“You better tell me what you find out.”

“Of course.”

“Bye Darla!” Shawn calls out the door.
