Chapter 1: Birthday Blues

Chapter Text

A skeleton and two humans sat on a couch. The sun is down, the only light coming from the TV. They’re snuggled together, with a few blankets wrapped around them.

“Heh…thought she wanted to watch this movie,” Sans whispered.

“Today was a big day, let her sleep.” Nagito leaned against Sans, head on top of his, eyes closing.

Sans hummed.

“..How did we end up like this?”

“Like what?”

“Like parents.” The skeleton sighed. “Never thought I’d…y’know, be a dad.”

“Me neither, but here we are.”

“What if I mess it up?”

“You took care of Papyrus.”

“How aren't you worried about this?”

“Hah, I’m terrified. But it’s gonna be okay.”

“How do you know?”

Nagito sits back, reaching to turn Sans’ face toward his own.

“I have you.”

“I love you.” Sans grinned.

“Love you too.”

-

Nagito sat on the couch, his leg bouncing. One hand held his head, while the other pet the cat that lay next to him. The television was on, but he paid no attention. He checked the time: 11:47 pm. He bit down on his lip.

“He should have been home hours ago.” He thought out aloud. Nagito turned to the furry head that was now rubbing against him. He lifted the cat to his lap, his lips turning down.

“I guess I should have expected this. He’s been getting home so late recently.” The cat tilted his head. “Raymond, why did it have to be today? He could have been gone any other day, but why my—“

His thoughts were interrupted by a jingling sound outside. Nagito took a deep breath, wiping away tears he didn’t realize had been forming.

-

The skeleton opened the door, being welcomed by a chilling glare. A shiver ran down his spine.

“Hey...” Sans uttered.

Nagito removed Raymond from his lap, then rose to his feet. “We need to talk.”

“Look—“

“You can’t keep doing this. It’s almost midnight. Where are you even—“ Nagito’s scolding halts as Sans steps around him, approaching a slice of cake on the table.

“Are you even listening to me?!” He walks in front of the skeleton but scrunches up his nose. “What is—have you been drinking?”

“Can’t a guy have some fun?”

“You’re not just a guy anymore. You—“

“Could you quit lecturing me? I'm not a child.”

“Well, you sure do act like one!” Tears began forming. “I can’t do this anymore!”

“and what the hell do you mean by—?”

THUD

Sans and Nagito stop yelling and turn towards the hallway to find a book on the floor. The two look back at each other. Sans sighs, before heading over, placing the book back on the shelf it fell from.

“I’ll go see what’s up.”

-

Sans stands in the doorway of a room with pink walls. His daughter, Hatsune Miku, is sitting on the bed.

“A little late for you to be up…” Sans approaches her bed. He notices she has a book in her hands, though judging by the said book being upside down, she doesn't appear to be reading it.

“I couldn't sleep...we were waiting for you.” Miku wrinkles her nose and scoots away from him. “You smell funny.”

He takes a seat at the foot of her bed, ignoring her comment.

“Well, I’m home now. Why don't you get to sleep?” Sans pats her back before heading towards the door. “‘Night.”

“Goodnight, Sans.”

-

Sans slowly shuts the door to her room. He makes his way down to the kitchen. Nagito is at the dining table, his expression a combination of bitterness and dismay. His eyes are damp and rosy.

“..Well? What did she say?”

“Said she couldn’t sleep, ‘n you guys were waiting for me.’ He burps,“‘Dunno what’s so important today, though.”

Nagito’s eyes widen, getting watery again. He pushes himself off the table abruptly, storming away.

“What now?!” Sans followed after him.

He stops suddenly to look Sans in the eyes.

Nagito stands at the entrance of the hallway, hand clasping the doorway.

“Today was my birthday.”

Sans gapes at Nagito as he yells down the hallway.

“I’m going to sleep on the couch.”

-

That night, Sans sleeps alone in their bedroom, while Nagito sniffles on the couch.
