“What do you think getting the whole world to smile looks like?”
With Kanon, it was a sensible question. But being part of Hello, Happy World! meant there could be no sensible answers. Misaki sipped her coffee and looked out at the sunset. She could hear the cicadas already, a sound both everywhere and nowhere.
“Nothing visual, because if everyone in the world was awake at the same time I’m sure about half of them wouldn’t be happy for long.”
“Oh, Misaki-chan! I guess it is hard to picture, huh?”
Kokoro was doing a cartwheel down in the backyard. Hagumi was exclaiming something, which made Kokoro do it again.
And Kaoru was looking at her.
Misaki looked pointedly anywhere else.
“I think Kokoro’s version of smiling doesn’t mean literally smiling all the time,” Kanon went on.
It was too hot for Misaki’s heart to be beating so fast. She risked looking again. Kaoru was speaking with Hagumi.
“Of course it doesn’t,” she said, quiet. The sky was bathed in golden orange.
“What does a smile on the heart look like?”
Misaki didn’t know, but she thought it might look an awful lot like the smile on Kaoru’s face right now.
