Forgetfulness, Vans and their Owners

Summary:

Jane falls for the van before she falls for Luna.

Work Text:

Jane forgets a lot of things.

Darcy’s usually there to yell at her if something’s particularly important but her assistant is away, visiting her cousin or something like that - a fact which Jane does indeed forget until she remembers the scene Darcy made.

The woman didn’t want to leave, had worried and fussed over her until Jane was ready to push her out of the door because she can take care of herself! She’s been taking care of herself for longer than Darcy’s been in her life. It hadn’t reassured the other woman.

Privately, Jane admits that she had a point. She hasn’t exactly got the best track record - she gets too caught up in her work to remember her basic human needs, too enthralled with the stars.

Her equipment, the equipment she’s made from donated (scavenged) parts is recording data all the time and sometimes Jane wants to do the same. Maybe she is more metal than flesh, if such a thing is possible.

It isn’t to her knowledge (not yet anyway).

But there are a lot of things now that she knows that she hadn’t thought possible - aliens, demigods, hammers, Infinity Stones and so on - so she isn’t as surprised as she could have been when an attention grabbing van drops Darcy off near her workstation and a blonde woman emerges too, revealing what must be a real-life TARDIS.

That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t drag Darcy aside and interrogate her about said van and it certainly doesn’t mean that she almost forces the blonde woman, now revealed to be Luna - Darcy’s cousin, to give her a tour.

Jane falls in love far too quickly.

When she meets that gaze, the familiar thrill of adventure, of wanting to explore, just as prevalent in Luna’s eyes as hers - she knows that her heart will be safe. She’s willing to make that donation to be allowed inside.

Darcy looks at the two of them, pronounces them sickening and then flounces off for a bit. Jane doesn’t care and Luna doesn’t seem to mind, too busy trying to track down a Heliopath. Jane turns her attention back to the one that has captured her heart, the flowery decoration just another beautiful feature.

To tell the truth, Jane falls for the van far before she falls for Luna.

Because she does fall for the other woman, does give her her heart too. Is it any wonder? There may be a huge gap between them, filled with magic, war, pain and fear but Jane has spent her entire life looking at the stars. Luna has spent her entire life seeing things that no one else can.

They’ve more or less spent their entire lives looking at each other, Jane watching the moon and Luna seeing what she wasn’t meant to (or perhaps she was meant to, no longer matter what they say).

In the sun, they are creature hunters - quiet and skilled. The quiet does not always last as long as they need but it lasts as long as they want, Darcy always willing to strike conversation when she feels it has been too long.

In the moon, they are stargazers - all three of them curled up under the hidden glass roof and watching the stars. When it is just the two of them, just Jane and Luna, they follow the constellations of each other’s bodies instead.

These moments, Jane does not forget.
