Work Text:
Light was always kind of annoyed by Misa, for one reason or another. He never really expressed it very much so it all kind of built up inside of him. He was frustrated, and her need to latch on to him and express herself romantically towards him never failed to make him stressed out. He was supposed to be kind and polite but being that way towards Misa was just so exhausting. And of course, being stressed isn’t good for the body. One side effect to large amounts of stress was lack of sleep, and Light was currently experiencing that. The exhaustion and stress he felt were not a good mix. He just wanted to sleep, but he was extremely restless.
It was around 3am, he was tossing and turning and trying to sleep, and on an ordinary night he would be! His clothes felt too tight and the room was too warm and his handcuff was so uncomfortable. It was tugging at his wrist, and every time he re-situated himself it clanged against the side of the bed. Contrary to popular belief, L and Light do not share a bed. They were in their own separate beds, pushed together with around 3 feet of space in between the two beds. The chain of their handcuffs was long enough that usually they could sleep quite well in this situation.
Well, at least Light usually slept quite well, quite often when he went to sleep for the night L was still awake, but he had to sleep sometime during the night because he certainly doesn’t sleep during the day. It was true, L does sleep during the night. He just makes sure he goes to sleep after Light does and wakes up before him too, to give the illusion to Light that he was always watching him. He failed to realize that Light quite frequently wakes up in the night for a glass of water and can see him sleeping. Maybe he did realize this, but figured it was alright after all.
Currently though, they were both awake. When Light was trying to sleep, eyes closed and attempting relaxation, L thought he was asleep, so he went right on to bed. But Light’s tossing and turning and the jingling of the chain woke L up, he was quite the light sleeper.
Light sighed and sat up, giving up on sleeping for now. He wished it would be day already, so he could get a cup of coffee and do something productive. For right now though, he was spacing out on the wall in front of him. He glanced over to L, and to his surprise he saw L’s wide eyes staring right back at him, wrapped in his blanket and still laying down, knees to his chest, he probably just woke up.
“Ryuzaki, why are you awake? It’s 3 in the morning, you should be asleep.” Light said in a hushed tone, rubbing his eyes.
“I could ask you the same thing, why are you awake?” L asked, with a slight combative tone in his voice, almost like he wanted Light to respond with: “I’m awake because I am Kira.”
L shifted to his normal sitting position, shrugging the blankets off of him.
“I couldn’t sleep, sorry if I woke you up, stupid chains are so uncomfortable!” Light complained, yawning and stretching, trying to wake himself up despite the fact he has been awake for hours. He shifted himself so he was sitting on his bed facing L, hoping to have a conversation or something to pass the time.
“Something on your mind? You usually aren’t awake at this hour, and the chains haven’t prevented you from sleeping well in the past.” L asked.
Light shrugged and he glanced down at the floor so he wouldn’t have to make eye contact. L looked at him, expecting Light to say something. He wasn’t going to accept a shrug as an answer. Plus, being Kira would make any average person have trouble sleeping. So, maybe…?
“Honestly, Misa is kind of getting on my nerves. I feel kind of pressured to reciprocate her romantic feelings for me, but I can’t, and she doesn’t seem to understand that. It makes it stressful to be around her.” Light replied. He honestly didn’t even know why he was telling L this. Usually, every conversation they had was a battle of intellect, but this felt like a genuine conversation. At least, in Light’s sleep-deprived opinion.
L raised his eyebrow and nodded. He wasn’t expecting an answer like this from Light, of all people. This made L’s respect for Soichiro and Sachiko go up a little, they were good parents if they taught Light that it’s okay to be vulnerable. However, L did not get the privilege of good parents, so he couldn’t really respond with an equally heartfelt response. He also couldn’t really understand Light’s situation. After all, people aren’t throwing themselves at L the way they are at Light, as much as he wished that were the truth.
“Tell me, have you heard of April Fools Day?” L asked, seemingly changing the subject.
“Yeah, why?” Light questioned, wondering how this could relate to the topic of conversation.
“Well, that’s in two days. I say we fool Ms. Amane. As pay-back.” L smirked slightly, shifting around so the chain that connected their handcuffs was in a more comfortable position.
“‘Payback’, isn’t that a bit harsh, Ryuzaki?”
“Hmm… It won’t be harsh, it’ll be harmless fun. You’re the last person she’d suspect will prank her. Don’t you want to see the look on her face?” L tilted his head, trying to hold back a smile.
The idea was tempting. If Light was being honest, he did want to see the look on her face.
“ Alright, what’s the plan?”
…
Two days later, Light and L were in the main room of the task force as usual, typing away at their laptops. Doing research, looking at the footage of Yotsuba, the usual stuff. They had been at it for a few hours before Misa even awoke, and when she did, L saw her stumble out of bed over the cameras.
“Ms. Amane is awake, are you sure you still want to go through with our prank?” L asked, not taking his eyes of the screen where it showed Misa brushing her teeth.
“Yeah, I guess.” Light shrugged. He was very curious on how Misa would react to their prank. He suspected anger, he would honestly be quite surprised if she reacted any other way.
Light saw over the cameras as she picked out her outfit, and began to head for the stairs. He swallowed his nerves, and shifted his computer much closer to L’s, and he scooted his chair next to L as well. He didn’t bother to look at L, this was awkward enough. Instead, he focused on the work he was doing on his computer. In the midst of typing, L’s cold hand grabbed his, moving both of their hands off of Light’s keyboard onto the space next to it, resting his hand on top of Light’s.
“Simply sitting closer to each other won’t be very convincing… babe.” L claimed in a monotone voice that wasn’t very convincing, either. Light scowled when L called him ‘babe’, it sounded so strange coming from the detective. Misa wasn’t even in the room yet, so why did he have to call him that?
“Hey you two! Good morning!” Misa declared, hopping down the stairs, full of energy. As she got the bottom step, she finally caught sight of the two men awkwardly holding hands. Well, it would be more accurate to say L had his hand awkwardly placed on top of Light’s, not even resting his full weight of his hand on Light’s.
She paused for a second, looking at them both. Light turned his head from his computer screen to look at her, seeing her arms crossed with an irritated look on her face. Light felt a small bit of satisfaction.
“Uh? Guys? Aren’t you gonna wish me a good morning, too?” She raised her eyebrow. Oh, Light’s smugness left as quickly as it came. She wasn’t irritated because L and him were holding hands, it was because they hadn’t wished her a good morning.
“Good morning, Misa.” Light turned his head back to his computer, awkwardly trying to type with one hand, the other being occupied. L realized how Misa hadn’t noticed their touch yet, and he added pressure onto Light’s hand, almost being pinned to the desk at this point. He couldn’t find a good amount of pressure to put onto his hand, either barely touching him at all or holding his hand down on the desk, it wasn’t painful but it was pretty uncomfortable, not to mention extremely awkward.
Misa was seemingly satisfied by Light’s response, and she moved to slump down onto the couch, now facing away from the other two in the room, picking up a magazine. Well, it was obvious subtlety wasn’t going to work on her, so L cleared his throat.
“Ms. Amane, Light and I have something to tell you.” L removed his hand from Light’s, spinning his chair around to face Misa, removing his hand from Light’s. Light followed suit, and Misa set down her magazine with a curious expression.
“Um, okay!” Misa got up from her spot on the couch, standing facing L and Light, who stood up from their chairs and went back to holding hands, albeit awkwardly.
“You see, Ryuzaki and I, well… how do I put this…” Light trailed off, trying to sound convincing. Misa stared at them expectantly.
“Light and I are in a romantic relationship.” L finished the thought for him. Light cringed internally at these words, but nodded, hoping his blush of embarrassment would come off as being flustered, or some other romantic bullshit.
Misa said nothing, her face stayed the same as well. She did nothing, waiting for them to say something else. Light sighed, he knew what she was waiting for. He leaned over and pecked L on the cheek.
“Hm. You two are dating?” Misa put rested her hand on her hip. She didn’t seem too mad, just a bit confused.
“Yeah, we are.” Light told her, glancing over to L who brought his hand (the one he wasn’t using to hold Light’s) to his lip to pinch and pull at it, and he nodded to Misa.
Misa sighed dramatically and rolled her eyes.
“Finally! I’ve known for like, SO long! I was waiting for you guys to tell me!”
….what?
She turned around and sat back down on the couch, picking up her magazine and opening to the page where she left off.
You see, it’s April 1st, also known as April Fools day. Light and L’s plan was to pretend to date each other to get a reaction out of Misa. They aren’t actually dating. So, Light and L were understandably very confused at her response.
L jerked his head to look at Light, silently questioning what to do next. After all, this wasn’t a part of their plan, right? Light just stared at the space Misa was standing in a second ago, trying to process what she just said.
“Wh-” Light cut himself off, rushing over to stand in front of Misa, dragging L along with him.
“Aren’t you angry at us?” Light asked urgently.
“PSH!! Why would I be angry?” Misa giggled, either ignoring Light’s strange behavior or simply not noticing it.
Light huffed and shook his head. L was standing next to Light, observing as the two talked.
“Ryuzaki and I aren’t actually dating. We only told you to pull a prank on you. It’s April fools day.” Light said with a sense of urgency in his voice. Misa looked up from where she was reading the magazine, raising her eyebrow. She glanced over to L, who nodded.
“Psh, you don’t have to lie to me! I can hear you two at night ya know~!” Misa teased.
Light’s face turned bright red. Highly embarrassed and offended at this accusation.
“No! We don’t-“
“Ya know I never thought of you as the dominant type, Ryuzaki!” She cut Light off, smiling. L smirked and nodded slowly, apparently confirming what Misa said.
“What’s up with you two?! Ryuzaki, tell her it’s not true!” Light asserted. L smiled.
“April fools!” Misa says, standing up and lightly whacking Light’s shocked face with the rolled up magazine. “I know you two aren’t dating! What, do you think I’m STUPID?” Misa smiled mischievously.
Light was shocked. Misa pranked him? But how? Usually she manages to mess up even the smallest of things. She also proved she isn’t the best at acting without a script. She wasn’t capable of something like that. Wait a minute…
Light turned to face L. “You have something to do with this, don’t you, Ryuzaki?” He said, with a mixture of disappointment and being impressed.
L looked at him, the same blank expression on his face. He didn’t say anything, but he was about to when-
“Yup! This was allll apart of his plan, babe! Did we fool ya?” Misa latched onto Light’s arm.
“Ryuzaki, we’re together 24/7! How did you even plan this with Misa without me knowing?!” Light paid no attention to Misa.
“Email.” L responded.
“Email?!” Light repeated, shocked at his oversight. L smiled and nodded.
Light huffed and went back to the desk, moving his laptop away from L’s to get back to work.
He opened a new tab, and navigated to his email.

He clicked send with a frustrated sigh.
“You know I monitor your emails, right?” L reminded him.
“GODDAMNIT.”
