Work Text:

“Shhhhhh,” Inuyasha whispered, hoping to not wake his slumbering wife that lay beside him, cuddling up against him. She was so peaceful, and she didn’t get a lot of that anymore. It was Kagome’s birthday, and she deserved one day (well, actually, she deserved all the days) to actually get some rest. The subtle but still audible whimper that came from his arms was why she found herself on the short end of that stick: Moroha. Their sweet baby girl who was just six months old and still breast-feeding…and she had no concept that night was the time for sleep.

Kagome had tried to pump, and Inuyasha tried to give Moroha the bottle, but the stubborn little girl (just like her mother–okay, and just like him) would fuss with the nipple and then pull away, making the most sour and annoyed face. Brat. Too smart for her own good to know the difference between a bottle and a boob.

To be fair, he’d be disappointed too if Kagome tried to fool him.

So, he couldn’t necessarily blame her for being a stuck up little brat. But, Moroha was keeping Kagome awake most of the night. Thank fuck maternity leave was a year in Japan. The states had it rough with stupid six to twelve weeks. Dumbasses.

They’d waited–to have Moroha. Marriage. Shit. They’d met by mistake–a horrible accident that nearly killed him and then drained her in return. But–Inuyasha was, oddly enough, thankful for the incident, otherwise he would have never met Kagome. Their paths were just so different.

She was in school and he was a loner. Work. Home. Work. Home. Maybe a bar. Home. Work. Family. Repeat.

They’d maybe admit that they rushed things–but it was fucking perfect. The first time they made love (yes, that’s exactly what it was they did) was amazing and only left them with promises of more. And those promises had been fulfilled.

It was hard to imagine five years had passed since then.

Kagome had finished school. They’d officially announced their engagement and moved in together (not that them moving in together was really that well hidden). Got married. Moved into a house and out of his dinky-ass apartment. Then…

Moroha. Their sweet baby girl.

Lost in his thoughts, watching his slumbering mate, he got distracted and forgot his mission was to soothe their daughter, only to be pulled out of his trance by the little stinker. In a full blown wail. His ears bent and pressed against his head to protect his sensitive hearing, he tried to calm Moroha again, shushing her gently, pleading to stop before–

What was that song Kagome would hum to their baby? It was from that stupid Frozen movie that she insisted Moroha loved when it was actually Kagome enjoyed. Having a baby just gave her an excuse to enjoy her Disney films without judgment.

How did it go? And fuck, was he actually that desperate enough to sing it? Hushing their baby and seeing Kagome’s chest rise and fall, her peaceful slumber still draped over her body like a curtain, made his answer clear: yes. Yes, he’d sing for his girls.

Even he felt like a dumbass singing a fucking Disney Princess song.

“Alright, Moroha, you’re really making me do this, ain’t ya?” he murmured gently. “Realllllly wanna see how much I love you girls, don’t ya? Alright, alright:

Where the North wind meets the sea

There's a river full of memory

Sleep, my darling, safe and sound

For in this river, all is found

In her waters, deep and true

Lie the answers and a path for you

Dive down deep into her sound

But not too far or you'll be drowned

Yes, she will sing to those who'll hear

And in her song, all magic flows

But can you brave what you most fear?

Can you face what the river knows?

Where the North wind meets the sea

There's a mother full of memory

Come, my darling, homeward bound

When all is lost, then all is found”

And just like that, his sweet baby girl was out with his gentle, sweet, rocking and his hums of the final part of the song. Huh…guess he owed Kagome an apology. Maybe she wasn’t exaggerating.

“Mmmmm… I give you an A for effort,” Kagome said softly as she turned and rested her head on his thigh, letting her stormy eyes peer up at him. Even as tired as she looked, she was fucking beautiful.

“Fuck…” Inuyasha replied in a groan. “I tried to be as quiet as I could.”

“I appreciate it… but the wail woke me up. But then you started singing and I couldn’t help but pretend to stay asleep so I could hear the cover of my favorite song from that movie.”

“That never leaves here.”

“Hmmmm,” she purred, sitting up, a new dark look on her face, teasing and playful, delicious and arousing, “and what do I keep for keeping such a secret?”

“Lemme put your daughter down and I’ll start my argument,” Inuyasha rumbled back.

“Better stay quiet… otherwise I’m gonna tell the world that the rude, surly hanyou I met in my hospital actually sings sweet Disney lullabies to his baby and his wife,” Kagome taunted, kissing and nipping his neck.

“Fuck,” he growled, twisting away and laying their girl down gently before he pounced his minx of a wife. While the hanyou wanted to give his mate more sleep since she deserved it on her birthday, he gave a couple other things that she more than earned before laying her back down, with Moroha next to her unclothed nipples so she could drink without reawakening Kagome just before he laid next to them, holding them close, cuddling with his family, while he murmured the lullaby again just for them.
