Work Text:
Angela isn’t sure how it starts.
Normally, Bella having friends before her would be no surprise but with the funky mood she’s been in recently, Angela isn’t quite sure how she managed it.
There’s an almost ethereal girl that comes to join them sometimes, on the rare outings that Bella can be persuaded to take. She’s coming more often nowadays, at least physically if not mentally and Angela wonders if the strange girl plays a role in that.
She’s half convinced that Luna Lovegood is some sort of sprite - or at least magical because there’s no way that she’s like the rest of them, an ordinary human.
Luna is weird.
She’s weird and not in the way of the Cullens - with their extraordinarily good looks and identical amber eyes and reclusiveness. Luna is weird in an endearing way, in the way of a child with far too many dreams. The Cullens were cool but Luna is warm, so warm.
Whenever they get the chance to be alone, when Bella is there enough to engage in conversation with the rest of the group, Angela sits as close to Luna as she can and manages a few words, quiet as she is.
The blonde is Bella’s friend but slowly, slowly she becomes Angela’s too.
Just as slowly, Bella heaves herself up, rebuilds and all three of them spending time together becomes more and more common. Angela can’t prove it but she thinks Bella is trying to leave the two of them alone more often because her friend makes some excuse to get out of it.
At first, she’s worried that Bella is sinking further and further back into her shell and while there are periods like that, Jacob or Chief Swan’s accounts of how they spent the day are enough to convince her otherwise.
So she enjoys the moments with Luna, just the two of them and anything else.
And then Bella interrupts one of their moments, frantic and worried and mumbling about vampire and trackers and revenge and Cullens. Angela knows better than to ask right then.
She sees Luna her friend slip into General Lovegood (that’s what she tells the sparkly disco balls - sorry vampires - at least) and Angela really should be terrified when the deadly creatures back off at the mere mention of her name but she isn’t. She isn’t.
Angela is curious instead, hungry for knowledge, hungry to know about the worlds she’s been introduced to, hungry to learn about the girl named after the moon who Angela thinks is just as much like the sun.
They have no end of serious conversations in Luna’s van, somewhere where not even Bella has been yet and that night, she decides that it doesn’t change anything.
Angela still finds herself looking at Luna’s lips, wondering what they’d feel like against her own and then flushing because she’s never thought of anything like that before about anyone.
She cannot help but fantasise about what it would be like to be in a relationship with Luna, to try the things she’s seen Jessica do - though maybe not in public. She’s not quite as confident as the other girl.
Angela keeps waiting for the right time to ask but suddenly the Cullen’s are back and Luna has to put up with a protective Edward and a confused Jacob.
And then her friend confessed that she cannot love anyone romantically. Maybe she knew what Angela was getting close to revealing, maybe she didn’t (you can never tell with Luna) but her heart breaks in her chest.
She recovers enough to ask, though Luna sees right through her. Her friend (because that’s all that they’ll ever be she knows) tells her about her confusion, that she does not understand the difference between platonic and romantic relationships.
Luna tells her she is Quoiromantic with all of her usual ease and Angela wishes she could dislike her for that but it’s one of the things that attract her to her so much.
It takes her a while to process it, to accept it and then she decides that it doesn’t change anything either and asks the other girl out on a date.
Angela is sure about this.
