Sokka smiled as he held out the baby for them to see. “This is your Aunt Mai and Aunt Ty Lee, he said in a high-pitched voice.
Mai cringed. She hadn’t expected to receive a special title when she found out the baby was coming. Growing up, she hadn’t called anyone aunt or uncle except her parents’ siblings and their spouses. Giving the title to random people wasn’t done in the Fire Nation, at least not among the nobility. She wasn’t against it so much as she was unsure about what to do with the position.
But unlike Mai, Ty Lee was thrilled. She hurried to get closer, giggling down at the infant. “Hello, little baby.”
Sokka handed the baby over to her. She cradled her safely in her arms and turned towards Mai with a beaming smile. Mai looked down at the baby with an unsure expression. She really didn’t know how to interact with little kids, despite a significantly younger little brother.
“We’re going to have so much fun together,” Ty Lee told the baby.
“Doing what?” Mai asked, keeping her voice low. She’d heard that new parents could be defensive about their kids, and the last thing she wanted was to get on Sokka’s bad side over a baby.
Ty Lee shrugged as much as she could without jostling the baby around. “Play games, go to the theater…”
“No one will let an infant into a theater. They cry too much.”
“When she’s older,” Ty Lee said, not the least bit off put by Mai poking holes in her plans. She pressed a kiss to Mai’s cheek. “We’ll be the funnest aunts that she has.”
Mai looked down to find the baby looking back with a blank expression on her face. Maybe Ty Lee would be right, but for the moment, Mai was skeptical.
