Summary
Piltover-Zaun is locked in a brutal, century-long war with Noxus. Out of "necessity", the first-born of every family, man or woman, is drafted into the front lines at the age of 23. But of course, the upperclassmen have the option to send staff in the place of their children. The clock is ticking as Caitlyn’s 23rd birthday approaches. Vi (age 22), the Zaunite Head of Security for the Kiramman estate and Caitlyn’s long-term best friend, approaches Cassandra Kiramman with the proposal that she go in Caitlyn’s place. Both women are united in their fear for Caitlyn’s safety, so Cassandra agrees. As it happens, both Caitlyn and Vi are each secretly in love with the other. When Caitlyn wakes up early on her 23rd birthday to find Vi already on her way out the door, she isn’t happy about this at all and tries to convince Vi to stay. Vi explains she can’t just let Caitlyn go in her place and that the paperwork had already been drafted in her name. She promises Cait she’ll return home. Cait is angry and sad, but can’t do anything to stop Vi from going, so she counts the hours, the minutes, that Vi’s gone, and as she lays awake in her bed, worrying, she feels like she can’t breathe. Not without knowing Vi is safe.
