The Adventures of Merlin, Reborn

Summary:

What title says.

Work Text:

Many, many years later, Merlin finds himself walking on the path alongside the waters of the Isle Of The Blessed, the birds were chirping, and the cars drove past. The sun was setting.
Every day Merlin walks past the place where Arthur died and wished how he'd been more careful about where Arthur walked.
As he was walking, there was a sudden pulse of energy that Merlin could feel coming from the waters. There then suddenly was a bright light from where the power had been coming from. As curious as Merlin was, he knew he couldn't go and investigate the magical source. However, he did have several questions on what it was and what will it do, but he just continued to walk back to his house in the forest. After this event, Merlin started to feel something wrong, like he was 100 years younger, just when Arthur died. This was not normal since he was only 123 years of age. He decided to let it slide for the moment and went to bed.

In the morning, Merlin woke up feeling new and powerful, unlike he was the day before. He rubbed his eyes and didn't feel the wrinkles on his skin. Hence, he went to look in the mirror and was shocked as Merlin saw himself young again. He was sure that this was the use of magic but didn't know anybody who could be powerful enough to do this and why they did it. He was convinced that the event from the day before caused this to happen, so he got packed with all his healing equipment and other essential items. He went outside and spotted a deer eating fresh, juicy grass standing behind a tree that is close to his cottage. Merlin noticed something unusual about the deer. There was a certain aura around the animal, an unusual one not usually seen in animals, and it was a dark aura. Merlin could only suggest that it was created by or somewhere where magic was being used in the area. The deer looked up at Merlin and stared at him, making Merlin wanting to know more about this mysterious animal that has something to do with magic. Merlin once read in the book of magic that whatever is in the area of a powerful blast of magic will return to the one who created the magic. The deer spooked and ran off into the woods.

Merlin decided to go after the deer. He followed the deer to an archway made out of stone. It had some carvings on it, which were ancient sigils used by the old religion. As he walked toward the archway, the forest around him started to move, rearranging itself. Merlin noticed that the area around him began to look like the forest he’d been in with Arthur, the one they went hunting, the forest that was surrounding Camelot.
He started to hear a voice that sounded very familiar.

'Could it be?' Merlin thought to himself as he walked toward the voice of what could only be Gwain's.
Merlin felt all wet and looked at his hands and body to find that he was covered in mud. He continued walking but only stopped when he heard someone coming from the other direction.

“Merlin?!" yelled a man who looked very strong and, well, handsome.

"Arthur?" Merlin asked the man who was standing now in front of him. Now that Arthur had come from the dark, he could see that it was indeed Arthur as Merlin ought it to be.

"Oh, it's so good to see you, Merlin," said Gwain, who was now standing behind Arthur, the once and future king who now is a king. Well, whenever now is.
Arthur looked down at Merlin and saw his charming face. They both glanced at each other, then Arthur gave Merlin his hand and helped him up. They ended the day by riding back to Camelot and saying goodnight to each other.
