Work Text:
Today was just a bad day. Everything had gone wrong!
In hero training you had gotten hurt, it was stupid but it caused you to go to recovery girl and miss the end of class including your match.
Then in lesson you just didn’t have the answers. The questions were just a jumble on the paper and the teacher's voice was background noise in your ears.
Now all you want to do is have dinner and go to your room. Maybe brood a little…
You just had to make it through dinner… just through dinner!
And so you sit there quietly eating your meal and keeping your head down whilst the others are laughing and talking around you. Gods why were they so loud!? On a day you just wanted silence and darkness.
“Hey man, what’s up? You okay?”
Glancing up you spot Kirishima looking over with his usual smile but concern in his eyes. Not wanting to get into it you simply nod your head only for a yawn to take you by surprise causing you to blink when it’s over.
Kirishima’s smile widens and he gives a understanding nod.
“Right! You must be getting tired after your trip to recovery girl! After that manly display in hero training!”
You weren’t, not really but it was a good enough excuse you didn’t have to come up with yourself. Giving the red head a quick smile and nod as you stand. Taking your plate to the kitchen, you don’t bother with good nights and just head up to your room. That was enough for one day… now for some time alon and maybe some music. Yeah, music was always good for expressing the emotions you just didn’t want to put into words.
As you walk up the stairs to your room you don’t notice a set of red eyes, that have been watching you since the end of class, continuing to follow your movements.
You make it to your room and enter it with a sigh. Deciding not to bother with the light you drop your bag to the floor beside the door and then follow it, sliding down the wood of the door as you pull out your phone. With a few taps to the screen the phone connects to the player deeper in the room and the air is filled with music from a playlist jokingly called ‘mood’. Perfect.
Leaning your head back against the door you let your eyes fall closed. It was much of a difference from the dark room but the action was a comfort.
And there you sit, for one, two songs, enjoying the solitude and safety you felt there… then in a lull between songs you feel a small vibration through the door behind you.
*knock, knock, knock*
“Hey, you in there?”
You’re surprised for a moment, Bakugo Katsuki was behind your door. Checking up on you? With a small shake of your head you brush the thought away. Sure you had hung out with him and the others of the so-called Bakusquad but he’d never really shown you much attention. Why would he now?
So instead of responding you decide the music was more than enough of a response to that question. Maybe… he’d even believe you’ve fallen asleep and just… go away…
And that lasts… another song at most before he begins speaking again.
“I know I might not be the best one but I want to know if you are okay. Come open the door already. I don’t want to leave you all alone in there.”
And that… that right there has you freezing where you sit. Was this real? Was Bakugo really worried about you?
Your thoughts begin to come rapidly as you try to work out why the explosive boy was at your door of all people.
Did you really want to let him in? This was your safe haven on the school grounds. The one place that was yours and you could completely relax after such a bad day…after hero training… after the lessons… you might even cry if you think about for too long. Dammit this was why you were listening to music and losing yourself to it.
You can feel the pressure for tears behind your eye even as you close them a take a deep breath. Releasing it you look down, only to see light shining in from under the door from the corridor outside and a shadow. The shadow of course must be Bakugo’s. Why was he still here!? You hadn’t responded and the music was still playing!
Then halfway through the song you feels the door behind you shake and the sound of someone sliding down it on the other side. Clearly Bakugo wasn’t going anywhere until he saw you…
Still taking slow deep breaths to hold back the potential tears you wait for the song to get to the instrumental before standing and opening the door.
*click*
On the other side you see Bakugo leaning back against the door a little only to lean forward once he realises it was opening. Looking up he quickly stands with a few sounds before tucking his hands in his pockets and not quite looking at you as he speaks.
“… hey…”
Without a word you step to the side holding the door open and letting him enter your room. He thankfully doesn’t comment on the darkness or the fact you clearly haven’t moved from the door since leaving dinner. No, instead he uses the light of the corridor to walk over to your desk and takes a seat in the chair there.
With a soft sigh you close the door and walk to the balcony doors and slide down them to sit on the floor again. The rain outside adding an extra calming layer to the atmosphere.
You don’t try to break the silence or slight tension between you and Bakugo, waiting to see what the other teen would do. After all he couldn’t go long without getting what he wanted… and currently his want was to work out what was wrong with you. And yet he remains silent and stares into the darkness of your room, focused on a random point you don’t have the energy to identify.
A song finishes, the slight tension slowly disappearing as you adjust to having him in your space. Then the second was winding down to end, that’s when he spoke.
“You stepped out pretty quickly earlier without saying anything. I got… worried or whatever…”
You don’t do much, simply turning your head to look towards him even if he didn’t look towards you.
That right there was why you had fought this last year. Why you fought to try and be a member of the Bakusquard. Because Bakugo could care! Did care! You had witnessed it many time before. From enraged speeches about being extras and no-bodies that got you blood pumping just to prove, him, wrong! To the occasional advice he’d say as he was walking past.
You’d just… never experienced that care towards yourself before. It makes your chest feel tight with emotion. But no! You weren’t going to cry! Not now! Not whilst he was in the room and seemed to care!
Words were still beyond your reach at the moment and he didn’t seem to bothered with just sitting there listening to the music so, that’s what you do.
Then you register the lyrics…
~”I just want to hear you say… I like you~
What’s stopping you?”~
Blinking you try to work out who the song is aimed at… maybe your feelings? Why could you say it to him… but if he felt the same what was stopping him?
But that was too much emotion and deep thought for right now. Fair too much when you just wanted to forget everything and simply exist for a moment.
The song changes and a small half smile stops to from on your face at the song that followed.
~“I need a guy like you…”~
Did you? Did you need a guy like Bakugo?
“You can tell me about it, you know? It’s not like I can’t handle it.”
The blonds voice cuts through your thoughts again, then the words register and the dam breaks.
The flood of emotions you feel for the boy in front of you cause the first tear to fall. You feel it running down your cheek and can only feel thankful it was the cheek he couldn’t see. Bringing your knees up and wrapping your arms around them you quickly bury your face… and the tears begin to fall.
You try to keep quiet, taking deep breaths and giving the occasional sniff, but you know Bakugo knows. There wasn’t really any chance you’d be able to hide it. Not from those observant eyes.
The pair of you stay like that, listening to the music as you cry and he gets lost in his thoughts. At least that’s what you think before a song begins to play. It is far too confident to be apart of your ‘mood’ playlist… and there is swearing. With a soft huff between breaths you blond must have connected to your player too. Now you just had to wait to see what else he played, deeming appropriate for the moment.
“So it’s like that huh?”
You are startled when a hand gently rests on your shoulder.
“It’s alright, just breathe a little. You can talk whenever you are ready. I’ll listen.”
His voice was so much closer and you don’t even remember hearing him leaving the chair! Yet, his voice is low and calming. So different from what he was like during the day, it causes a fresh wave of tears to begin to fall, but his hand doesn’t move from your shoulder. Instead it slowly begins rubbing circles where it can reach.
Slowly you relax into the touch and the tears begin to dry up. Slowly you take another deep breath, in, out, in, out… then give another huff which slowly turns into laughter at the sound of gamez feeling the room. Turning your head a little you rest you cheek on your knee as you give Bakugo a small smile.
He is crouched beside you but not looking in your direction, red eyes focused on the raining scene outside your balcony doors, as his hand doesn’t move from your shoulder.
Deciding that was enough for the night you reach down for your phone and take your speaker back in time to play Tokyo. It was about time you played something a little happier.
After crying you were feeling lighter, the days stresses leaving you. With Bakugo’s presence however the usually empty feeling that would follow is filled with a warmth you don’t want to name just yet.
Clearly hearing a song that wasn’t his Bakugo looks over and meets your eyes for the first time since entering your room. The pair of you stay like that for a moment before he stands and heads to the bathroom. Moments later he comes out with a few tissues.
“Here, Come here.”
Slowly you push yourself up, a smile on your lips, you cross the room and take the tissue. Giving him a nod you go to the bathroom clean yourself up. Looking in the mirror you can see your eyes were red and nose running a little but nothing too noticeable. A minute or so later you return and the music is changed once more, Bakugo is now sat on the floor by your bed phone in hand and looks up at you with a smirk, burnt rice playing over the speaker.
Chuckling softly you grab your phone and settle on the floor beside him and wait, wait for the song to end and a single tap has your music playing once more.
It was peaceful there, sat with the other. Your smile slowly grows as you fall into the music once more but this time you felt bright, happier. It doesn’t take long before you begin mouthing the lyrics and doing stupid actions.
~“Six feet tall and super strong,~
We’d always get along.”~
The actions do cause Bakugo to shove you over in fake exasperation but he is smirking when you return to your sitting position.
“How do you feel?”
His expression is a mix of pleased by your happy actions but also still a little concerned. Still happy to remain mute for the time being you give him a simple thumbs up as you continue to mouth the song lyrics.
Bakugo gives a nod in turn and then gives his usual grin as he pulls his phone out and taps the screen in time to smoothly transition to his song of choice.
Soon the rush of emotions begin to catch up with you, leaving you drowsy. You manage to hide a yawn or two before Katsuki seems to catch you. With a shake of his head he quickly selects another song to play next before turning to you.
“Want to lay down? You look kind of exhausted.”
Giving a soft frown you deflate as you look at him. He watches you before giving a soft huff and smirk as you feel the fight leave you and he realises he won. With a nod you stand and stretch. Slipping off your uniform jacket and tie, they get draped over the chair and climb into your bed.
Katsuki had stood to, watching you briefly before nodding and moving to the door. Without thinking you reach out and grab his wrist preventing him from leaving. After all you didn’t feel like being alone right now.
You were calmer but the idea of him leaving now hurt your chest so you hold on without saying anything… the moment stretches before he moves back to the bed and sits on the floor once more, A silent agreement to stay. At least until you fell asleep.
You reach for your phone once more and decide to play your ‘mood’ playlist once more, on shuffle. That was a big mistake…
The next song to play was one you had for your lowest moments. Ones you didn’t want to share with anyone else. As you listen you feel your tears building once again. Dammit! Hadn’t you cried enough in front of Bakugo already!?
You quickly turn away from the blond and curl into your pillow as the tears begin to fall once more…
“Let me in.”
As the song ends the command, and it was a command, surprises you. Without thinking you look over even as you roll towards the wall, back pressed against it.
Bakugo was stood by the bed and the moment you move he pulls the cover down and slips in. He doesn’t say anything else as he reaches out, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and pulls you into his chest.
“There, we good now?”
Shocked and speechless all you can manage is a nod… and co-incidentally nuzzles into his chest.
“Alright. Good.”
And just like that the two of you are laying in your bed… cuddling. You were cuddling Bakugo! Bakugo Katsuki! It seemed this evening was a night of many surprises.
Though what surprises your more was how calming it felt. You felt safe.
“You feel a little warm, you alright?”
Warm! Of course you felt warm! You were laying in your bed with Bakugo Katsuki, cuddling and most likely blushing! You quickly nod again, nuzzling into his chest again.
Shifting a little, you can feel him nodding above your head.
“Okay, as long as you’re good.”
With a soft sigh you relax. This was your evening, might as well accept it.
Soon the two of you are cocooned in the music. As the two of you lay there another yawn escapes you.
“You should sleep.”
His voice was low in your ear and you give a drowsy shake of you head. You don’t want this to end, not just yet. But Katsuki was working against you. He shifts a little so he is laying on his back, with you curled into his side and head on his shoulder.
“Close your eyes, alright.”
Along with the words he reaches over with his free hand and begins running fingers through your hair. Without realising your eyes slowly fall close, the comfort and drowsiness winning over your desire to enjoy Katsuki’s presence…
Song after song play and slowly you lose the fight with sleep and drift off…
The next morning you wake up alone in your room, the only signs the night before happened was the battle of water on your beside table and the desk chair still pulled out from the desk.
You never saw Katsuki’s soft smile or heard his soft, “Get some rest.“ as he left your room to return to his own. But they were there.
And if the blond’s thoughts drifted to you more often when you were apart? That was his secret.
If the following days you noticed he was standing closer to you, reaching out for you? Well, that was just between the two of you… as the evening in your dorm had been…
