Work Text:
The whisperings about the new dance studio started to work their way around the Academy, beginning largely with the young, female teachers’ aides. “He’s so dreamy,” they’d sigh to one another, practicing steps in the hallway during breaks throughout the day. Iruka hadn’t paid it much mind until Yumi, his aide, asked if he would consider coming with her to her salsa class that week. Her friend who normally went with her was sick and it would simply be too embarrassing to go alone.
While Iruka had never taken a dance class, he agreed, figuring it couldn’t be that challenging and not otherwise embarrassed at the prospect of taking a dance class. Kakashi was off on a mission, so it wasn’t as though he had anything else going on in the evening.
It had been unexpectedly fun.
And the instructor really was dreamy. And Iruka was pretty sure he wasn’t straight, based on how flirty he’d gotten when he was showing Iruka the correct pattern of steps. Not that it mattered one way or the other, though Iruka thought the predominantly female class might mutiny if they found out.
But the dancing bug had struck, leaving Iruka asking around in his friend group to see if anyone would consider going with him. Not to say that he wasn’t capable of going alone, but the thought of having a partner or friend there sounded more enjoyable. Anko had cheerfully informed him that she’d rather actively set herself on fire, Izumo and Kotetsu mumbled about each having two left feet, Kurenai laughed that she’d never be able to convince Asuma to try it, and Shizune-san looked actively horrified at the prospect. Though Kakashi and Tenzo were both away on missions, he knew he wasn’t going to bother asking them either.
When Iruka happened to mention the prospect of salsa lessons to Guy at his next Mission Desk shift, he’d been surprised by the other man’s enthusiastic response. “Sounds like a youthful challenge!” Guy declared, fist pumping the air and fixing Iruka with his customary million-watt grin. “When do we go?”

Guy had been an unexpectedly talented dancer. He picked up the footwork and physical aspects immediately, which wasn’t surprising, but he also had a high degree of rhythm and musicality. Iruka didn’t really know what that last one meant. It had come straight from the enthusiastic instructor as he hovered around Iruka and Guy and offered pointers. Though the class rotated partners occasionally through the night, Iruka and Guy tended to be paired off more often than not.
With any other guy, it might have felt awkward. He was in a happy, committed relationship with Kakashi and Guy and Tenzo were equally committed to one another. And the salsa was a sensual dance. Any time he was paired off with the instructor, he felt himself get a little lightheaded and was generally grateful when it was finished.
But with Guy it was fun. Goofy occasionally but always fun. Guy always led when they were paired off, dexterously taking Iruka around the class and praising his abilities the whole time. As always, he was so earnest in his praise, that Iruka couldn’t help but laugh as he received it.

Over an early breakfast one morning at Tenzo’s favorite restaurant, Guy excitedly told Kakashi and his boyfriend about his and Iruka’s new mutual hobby. Neither Kakashi nor Tenzo seemed particularly interested, despite Guy’s repeated attempts to invite them both to join them one night.
“What do you think of it?” Kakashi asked around bites of omelet, nodding as a waitress came around and filled up their coffees.
Iruka offered a small thanks to the waitress before replying, “it’s very…physical.” As he blew on his coffee, he tried to ignore the slight breathlessness to his response and the slight flush to his cheeks. Tenzo seemed to be eyeing him closely over his own coffee as Guy nodded in enthusiastic agreement.
Kakashi seemed either not to notice or not to care about Iruka’s reaction, changing the conversation to asking Tenzo about plant care tips for jade plants. Iruka had gifted Kakashi one for Christmas last year and it seemed to be struggling lately, though neither man was sure why.

A month or so later, Kakashi was hanging out at Tenzo’s apartment, watching the younger man tending to his massive collection of houseplants. Iruka and Guy were at a private lesson at the dance studio. “Have you seen their dance lessons?” Kakashi frowned at Tenzo, wondering why this was being brought up.
“No. Why would I?”
“Just come with me.”

The two men took positions at a nearby café, able to see clearly into the dance studio from their seats. Iruka and Guy were dancing with one another, smiling and joking as they were. Eventually they paused and the instructor cut in.
He was a tall man, wearing close-cut clothes and a very stylish man bun. Not Kakashi’s type but he could objectively see how others would find him attractive. After a moment of talking through something with their boyfriends, the instructor nodded at Guy, gently placing his hand in the Jounin’s before they started to move.
Kakashi had never seen the salsa before, but even he could tell there was an immediate uptick in the sexual energy in the room. A murderous tension started to roll off Tenzo, the younger man clearly annoyed by the obvious fawning and close contact the instructor was giving Guy. Their bodies were so close that their lips probably could’ve brushed if Guy turned his head the other way. It was almost comical for Kakashi, who had been friends with Guy for so long that it was nearly impossible to picture him in a sexual situation without laughing.
But when the partners switched and Iruka was swapped in, Kakashi felt a low growl escape his lips, causing Tenzo to laugh loudly. Iruka was a better dancer than Kakashi had expected and the instructor—who was now leading instead of following—was taking liberties to keep the Academy instructor close at hand.
After finishing with a flourish, including lifting Iruka’s leg up against his thigh in a way that made Kakashi veer dangerously close to murderous intent, the instructor stepped back and beamed at his two students. He offered them a small round of applause, then nodded his head towards the café, causing their boyfriends to turn around with satisfied smiles on their faces as they headed out into the late afternoon.
“Enjoy the show?” Iruka teased with a coy look, watching as Guy excitedly tried to convince Tenzo to come with them next time. “Our instructor says the salsa is the closest thing you can have to sex in public.”
“Mine,” Kakashi growled, shooting a dark look over at the dance studio.
Iruka laughed, lacing his fingers into Kakashi’s free hand and planting a quick kiss on his boyfriend’s cheek, “come try it next time.”
