Slow Down

Notes:

WinTeam Week 2022
Day 5 - “Slow down.”

Work Text:

"For every minute you're late, it'll be one lap," Dean called.

Team was in his second year now and he stretched outside the changing room as he heard Dean scolding the first years.

Those extra laps were a killer during his first year. You learned after a couple of times to just not be late. After Team started arriving with Win though, he was always early and even managed to improve his times quite a bit.

"Good job Team, I want to see you shave a few more seconds off today," Dean told him as he walked past to talk with Win.

Team was proud of himself knowing Dean thought he was doing good. He had always been determined but he was really hoping to take over from Dean when they graduated so he was pushing himself to focus more and work harder so hopefully it would happen and if Dean thought he could, he was in with more of a chance.

Team lifted his left leg up behind him to stretch when the doors for the pool swung open and in rushed a first year. Team noticed he'd been late a few times before but never learned from it.

"Get changed, you're late," Dean called as the boy apologised and made for the changing room. “And stop running by the pool, you should know the rules."

The boy rushed past Team, almost knocking into him. He quickly put his foot back down so he wouldn't loose his balance and looked up at Win to see a concerned look on his face.

Team could tell by his face and body language that he wanted to say something to the boy but he'd been told so many times, it probably wouldn't make much difference.

Team threw him a smile and visibly saw him calm down before he smiled back and went back to talking to Dean.

Team had just lifted his right leg up behind him when he heard the changing room door open again.

"Slow down!" Dean shouted.

Team didn't have a chance to register who he was shouting at before he felt a body knock into his back, sending him flying to the floor.

Team groaned as he landed on his left arm. He tried to roll onto his back but the boy was still on top of him.

"Can you get off?" Team moaned. He tried not to sound so harsh but the pain was not helping.

A second later the weight was gone and he assumed by the gentle hands that replaced it on his back, that Win had pulled him off.

"Can you sit up?" Win asked gently.

Team slowly moved into a sitting position with the help of Win, as he held his left arm to his chest.

"Can I see?" Win asked.

Team hesitated before nodding. Win moved closer and slowly reached his hand out, touching Team's wrist. Team hissed at the contact and Win quickly pulled his hand back.

"I'm sorry, baby," Win apologised.

"I think you should take him to the hospital, Win,” Dean suggested.

As if Win suddenly remembered there was other people around them, his eyes turned dark and he glared at the first year as he got up.

"How many times have we warned you about running in here and now someone's got hurt,” Win scolded.

Dean placed a hand on Win’s shoulder to get his attention. "I'll deal with this. Help Team."

Win gave the boy another glare before turning back to Team.

"I'm going to help you up, okay? Try not to put any weight on your arm," Win told Team as he gripped his waist and helped him up before guiding him to the changing room.

"Do you want to get dressed?" Win asked as he quickly changed his clothes.

Team was about to say no before he realised he was in just his swim shorts so he nodded. Win opened his locker and took his clothes out, helping Team step into his trousers before he moved to the shirt.

It took a few minutes to get Team’s shirt on and a few tears escaped from the pain.

“I'm sorry," Win said, wiping the tears before he buttoned up Team’s shirt and grabbed both their bags.

Win placed a hand on Team's back and held it there as they walked to Team's car, only swapping it for a hand on his knee as he drove them to the hospital.

They were seen quickly and Team held back his disappointment as they told him it was sprained and that he wasn't allowed to swim until the pain had gone.

"You will tell me if it still hurts won't you? I don't want it getting worse because you swim again too soon," Win spoke gently once they were back in his room.

Win knew Team too well to know that was something he would do.

"Why do I not get to swim when it was his fault? He shouldn't have to be told not to run in there,” Team said angrily, finally letting his tears fall.

Win quickly walked infront of him and hugged him as best he could.

"I will be talking to the coach and if I get my way, I'll make sure he won't be swimming with us again,” Win told Team.

When Team didn't reply, Win pulled back and wiped his tears away.

“Let me help you get changed and then we'll eat. I'll order something," Win suggested.

Team nodded and allowed Win to help him change. Once the food arrived, they ate then got ready to watch a film in bed.

"Where are you going?” Team asked when Win went to the right side of the bed.

"We should swap sides for a while so I don't bump your arm," Win said before stopping to think. "Or maybe I should sleep on the floor. I don't want to hurt you.”

Team looked at him and felt so much love in his heart. He had a perfectly good bed in his own room but Win was more willing to sleep on the floor than send Team to sleep on his own.

"This is fine, hia. Thank you,” Team said before climbing in the bed.

Win got in too and Team scooted closer, resting his head on Win’s shoulder as he started the film.
