The other one

Summary:

You expect it to be Marc or Steven at the door. You had no idea there was another one itching to meet you properly.

Work Text:

It was insanely late. You had long since gone to bed, sleeping soundly. Up until the point loud banging sounded at the door. It had you sitting up so quickly, for a moment you forgot where you were. The room was too dark to recognise it as your own room right away.

The banging on your door continued. It sounded like a fist knocking harshly against the wood. You feared someone was trying to break in.

Then you heard your name. Muffled slightly through the door. You didn’t recognise the voice, but they knew who you were.

The concern that Marc was in trouble and needed help crossed your mind. You hurry out of bed and toward the door. You unlock it and open the door.

The man lowered his hand and looked at you. A grin spread across his face as his eyes met yours.

You glared at him.

“What the Hell Marc?”

“Not quite,” he said.

“What do you mean not quite? Oh, Steven? Sorry.”

“Wrong again, sweetheart.”

The man walks into your apartment uninvited. You scoff as his audacity as you turn on your heel and look at him. He looks around the place.

“Marc, or Steven, whichever one of you this is, I was fast asleep. Unless you’re dying, could you come back some other time?”

The man chuckles as be turns slightly and peers at you from over his shoulder.

“Marc and Steven are asleep right now. Thought it was about time we met face to face. Things have changed,” he says, turning around fully to face you.

You run a hand down your face, tired.

“I don’t have time for riddles. Get to the point or get out.”

He grins again.

“The name’s Jake, Jake Lockley. I’m the other guy.” He holds out one gloved hand to you.

You stare at him.

“…what?”

Jake lowers his hand and takes a step closer.

“Marc and Steven are asleep, so to speak.” He taps his head to hint at what he was getting at.

“You mean… you’re another?”

He nods his head once.

“Do they… know? Your name hasn’t come up before,” you say, taking your chance to look him up and down. Dark jacket, black gloves, cap.

“Not exactly. Thought this could be our little secret, now that Khonshu has set them free.”

“Khonshu… set them free?”

“I’m his avatar now. They can live their lives when I’m not busy doing Khonshu’s work.”

“Is that really letting them go?” You ask, unsure if this was fair to the boys. You had grown fond of both Marc and Steven, knowing all of this felt like… a lie.

“Technically.”

Jake takes another step closer. You eye him with concern.

“So, you and Khonshu?”

He nods.

“Just when I thought all of that was behind me now. Why are you here, Jake?”

“I’m tired of them getting all your attention. I’m tired of you making a fuss over them. My turn, don’t ya think?”

You look at him in silence. You sigh.

“Jealousy?”

“Hardly. Just impatient.”

You chuckle softly. Jake smiles at the sound. He made you laugh, so that’s something.

You hold out your hand.

“Nice to meet you Jake Lockley.”

He takes your hand and gives it a firm shake.

“Nice to finally meet you too, sweetheart.”

You drop your hand from his and smile at him.

“Now, as much as you’re welcome here anytime, this late at night isn’t exactly desirable. I need sleep.”

Jake tips his cap.

“I’ll let you rest then. I wasn’t about to wait another day to see you, so forgive the intrusion. You’ll know where to find me,” he says, heading toward the door.

“How?”

He looks at you over his shoulder again.

“Just look out for my car.” With that, he leaves.

Confused, you rush to the window to see if you can spot him. The light outside is bright enough to spot him leaving the building and heading over to his car.

A white limo with a personal plate.

You laugh to yourself as he climbs into his limo and leaves.

Jake Lockley.

Now, that’s a name you won’t soon forget.
