Work Text:
You are Kirumi Tojo, a female human mage in the world of Alarathos. You live in Even'Era, a small village in the north of the kingdom of the world. A powerful mage from the north, you have traveled to Even'Era to study the arcane arts in the hopes of becoming a powerful magician. You are eager to prove yourself and to find a powerful patron to sponsor your magical studies. In your pouch you find several coins for spending in the local taverns of Even'Era. You find the village to be a peaceful place, especially compared to the hubbub of your former life in the great city of Nuro.
> You look around.
You step through the doorway into the great hall of the Even'Erian village inn. You find that it is filled with people, all of them staring at you.
> You sit down at a table.
You sit down at a table by the window, and wait for your eyes to adjust. The people around you are talking about some event, or another person, you don't know and have no interest in knowing.
> You say "What are you talking about?"
"Shh," says the woman seated at the table to the person seated next to her. She looks at the young man seated next to her, and sighs.
> You go over to the woman.
You walk over to the woman. She looks at you and sighs. "You're new here, aren't you?" she asks.
> You say "Yes I am"
"So is everyone else in this village," she replies. "We're all new here, so why don't you tell me your name?"
"Kirumi," you say.
"Mine's Meris."
> You say "Nice to meet you"
She sticks out a hand, and says "It'll be nice to have someone new to talk to. I'm from a small village outside of Nuro, so I have nothing in common with any of the other villagers."
> You say "What were the other villagers talking about earlier?"
"What? You mean what were they talking about YOU for the last hour?"
"Uh, yeah"
"Well, I don't know. I was sitting at the table in the corner."
> You say "They were talking about an event, and some person. What is that?"
"Oh, well the person in question is someone who was just recently hired as a mercenary by the king of this city, Nuro. He was just given a huge contract to bring back a stolen item.
> You say "What was the item?"
"It was a powerful artifact, supposedly created by the very first emperor of this world, who used it to open a portal to a place where all the demons came from.
> You say "Is that a bad thing?"
"Not all demons are bad. In fact, some are powerful creatures as well.
> You say "But will opening the portal create chaos?"
"I don't know. We'll find out soon enough."
> You leave the building.
You walk out into the sunlight of Even'Era. You walk down the sidewalk of the main road, and stop at the corner of the Inn.
> You go into the inn.
You walk into the inn, and stop at the bar to ask for a tankard of ale. "We've got a tankard of ale," says the barmaid.
"That'll do."
> You pour the ale to everyone.
You pour the ale to everyone. Everyone cheers, and you notice a man sitting alone, staring at you.
"What was that?" says the woman next to you.
"What was what?" you ask.
> You go over to the man.
You walk over to the man. "What was what?" you ask.
"You just cheered!" he says.
"I did not!" you say.
"Yes, you did!"
> You say "That was everyone else, I didn't cheer"
The man says
> You say "What?"
"You just cheered. Everyone else was cheering."
"No I wasn't."
"You did."
"Fine, but it was in response to someone else cheering, not because I thought anything would change."
> You say "Are you drunk, sir?"
"Huh?"
"You're drunk."
"I'm not..."
You grab the tankard of ale from the barkeep and take a drink. You notice the man get up and walk away.
> You buy a room for the night.
You buy a room for the night. You have one request.
> You go to sleep.
You head to your room at the inn and fall asleep within moments of laying down.
> You wake up.
You wake up, refreshed and ready to accept your destiny.
> You leave the inn.
You put on all your coins and leave the inn.
> You leave the town.
You leave the town and continue on your path to the city. You walk through the streets of Even'Era.
> You travel to a different city.
You travel to a different city.
> You find an inn.
You find an Inn.
> You ask the innkeeper what has been going on.
The Innkeeper tells you about the recent attacks on his city, and about the ongoing attack on his town.
"Who is attacking us?" you ask.
> You say "Who is attacking?"
The man says "We are in a state of war, as they have declared it. It is up to us to defend ourselves.
"But who is attacking us?" you ask.
"You don't know?
> You say "No"
"No."
> You say "Who is attacking, sir?"
"It's not good, I'm afraid."
"What?"
"They are demons."
"Demons?"
> You say "I can help fight demons, I'm a mage"
"You're what?"
"I'm a mage, I can help fight the demons."
"You're a mage? I'm a bard."
> You say "Where are the demons attacking?"
"Wherever we go, they attack us. We're at a state of war with them."
"Why would the elves attack us? They live in peace with us."
"That was before."
> You say "Elves?"
"Yes. It seems the elves have been deceived."
"By who?"
> You say "Have the demons deceived the elves?"
"Yes."
"We'll need to start making preparations. Will you be staying here tonight?"
"I suppose so."
> You say "You said you're a bard?"
"Yes."
"What's the name of your song?"
"The Song of the Wounded King."
"Sing it for me." You sing the Song of the Wounded King.
> You say "That was very nice"
The man smiles. "Thank you."
"You're from Even'Era, aren't you?"
"Yes I am."
"Well then, shall we be on our way?"
"Yes."
> You go fight the demons.
You travel to the border of Even'Era and Lathos. You see the border is heavily guarded.
"Well, I suppose we'll just have to fight our way through."
"Or surrender."
> You cast a spell on the demons.
You summon up the power on your fingertips and blast some of the demons with a bolt of lightning.
"Hahaha! I got you!"
"You're going to pay for that!"
> You set the demons on fire.
You use your magic to set the demons ablaze.
"Hahaha! I'm going to kill you all!"
"Not if I kill you first."
> You evade the attacks.
You manage to evade the attacks from the demons and stay safe.
"Hahaha! I'll get you!"
"Yeah right. You're going down!" You walk in the direction of the border.
> You kill the demon.
You kill the demon and continue on your way. You come to the border of Even'Era and Lathos. The border guards are all dead.
"We should probably make some preparations as well."
> You take the guards' swords.
You grab the fallen guards' swords.
"Come on!" You start running towards Lathos.
"We have to hurry!" You run as fast as you can. Demons are everywhere. The terrain is rough and uneven, and you stumble many times.
"You're too hu-!" You cut off the rest of your sentence as you accidentally cut off your own hand.
> You staunch the bleeding.
You use a coin purse to stanch the flow of blood from your injury. You continue running. You continue on. You continue fighting. You continue losing.
> You cast a spell on the demons.
You continue your journey towards Lathos. You come to a large mountain in the middle of Lathos. You see a large cave. You see a giant staircase within the cave.
> You go up the staircase.
You climb the staircase to the top of the cave. You find that the staircase has ended, leaving you at the mouth of a giant cave. It is large enough for several dragons to live inside.
> You look around the cave.
You look around the cave to see if there is anything of importance here. You see a staircase carved into the mountain wall. A large dragon stands by the staircase, regarding you.
> You go to the dragon.
You walk up to the dragon. "Hi."
"Hello."
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to check out the cave."
"That's private property. Who allowed you in?"
> You say "There was no one guarding the cave, so I came in"
"You're lucky the king is a fair man."
"Huh?"
> You say "What king?"
"The king of Alarath!"
"Ha, that's a rather pointless king."
"Why?"
"The only people who call themselves that are bards, and even they don't believe it."
> You say "Do you know anything about what's been happening with the elves? A man talked about them"
The dragon looks up at you. "The elves?"
"Yeah, the elves."
"I don't know anything about that."
> You say "Thank you anyway"
"Of course."
You walk away from the dragon, disappointed that all you learned was that dragons are nice creatures. If only you could find out more interesting things about this world.
> You travel around.
You travel around the cave. You see nothing of interest.
> You leave the cave.
You leave the cave and continue your way on your journey. You continue to walk on the rugged terrain of the world.
> You ask around about the elves.
You ask about the elves in Even'Era. Some people know a little about them, but no one seems to know a whole lot.
> You go to a different city.
You head to a different city. You come to a large city in the east of Lathos. It is called Nuro.
> You say "Back home"
"Back home." You turn around and start walking.
> You go to a tavern.
You enter a large, well-lit tavern.
A man sitting by himself at a table looks up at you. "Hey, boy" He points at you and says in a gruff voice,
> You say "I'm not a boy"
"Oh yeah? Pays to find out" He holds out a tankard of some sort of ale and says, "Have one."
You accept the tankard, and drink it.
> You say "I'm still not male"
"So what? Pays to find out"
"I don't want to keep bothering you with this." The man stands up and walks away. You finish the last drop of the tankard of ale.
> You say "What?"
You look around to see if anyone notices your sudden confusion, but the room is quiet and clean.
You look at the tankard in your hand. You think about what would make you have an ale tankard.
A man crashes through the door and bellows, "WHO IS IN CHARGE?!" You quickly put the tankard down and hide. Maybe you should leave, too.
> You sneak out of the tavern.
You sneak out of the tavern.
> You go through the town.
You walk through the town. You see a lot of people going about their lives. Most of them ignore you. You make it back to your apartment and go to bed.
> You hunt for demons.
You hunt for demons. You slay a few. You are the dark lord of all things evil. You are a mighty demon hunter. You slay the wicked and save the helpless.
> You travel to a different town.
You travel to a different town. You come to a large, prosperous city called Aarax.
The city is in ruins now, after being overtaken by a savage orc army.
> You look for people.
You look for people. You find many dead, and even more missing. They have been massacred. You are terrified by the thought.
> You cast a spell on the orcs.
You cast a negative spell on the orcs. You cause them to become violent and feral.
You take their place. You become a savage orc. You take the orcish name, "Orthrox."
> You kill the other orcs.
You kill the other orcs.
You become leader of the orcish tribe. You slaughter your way through the countryside, taking towns. You see no end in sight. You need allies to defeat these humans.
> You say "What just happened?"
You ask Orthrox what just happened. Orthrox says, "I just made some orcs savage and violent. That's why I'm leader now."
"Where's the king?"
"Dead."
> You say "I think I blacked out or something"
"I think you did."
Orthrox says, "Yeah, I don't know how much time passes"
"I don't know either, I think I blacked out."
"I see."
> You say "I don't remember being an orc and slaughtering people"
"Yeah, me neither"
Orthrox says, "Well, we can't be sure about anything, we don't even really know who's behind all this."
"Who could know?"
> You stop killing people.
You decide to stop killing people. You need someone on your side. You go to the ruins of Aarax and go to the king. His fortress has also been overtaken.
> You say "Do you need help defeating the orcs?"
"Defeating the orcs, ha, you've seen what they're like now. They'll kill us. They probably killed everyone else already"
"What do you suggest?"
> You say "I'm a powerful mage, I can defeat them"
"We're outnumbered and outgunned. We need help. The orcs are savage now. They won't take prisoners, they'll kill everyone."
"I'll send soldiers!"
> You say "I think I have a bard friend who can help"
"Who is it who says 'A bard's life is a song'? Does anyone know of a bard who can help?"
"Yeah, but we need to kill him first."
> You say "I can go get him"
"We need him alive, he's an old friend, I'll go get him."
"Don't you need him to play for you?"
> You say "He already did"
"I thought his songs were all about death and destruction. Why would he change now?"
> You say "Maybe he's not feeling depressed anymore?"
You decide to go investigate the bard. You go find the bard. You ask him if he is depressed. He says "What?"
He says
> You say "Are you depressed?"
"Depressed? Depressed would be if I had my own throne and people who loved me. I'm a bard. I'm a storyteller. I use my stories to inspire people.
> You say "Can you help me defeat the orcs?"
He laughs. "Why would you want to help the orcish savages? They killed everyone I loved."
"Because we need help. We're outnumbered and outgunned."
> You say "I don't want to help them, I want to defeat them"
"Yeah right. You want to defeat them. You want to defeat them so you can take their stuff."
"What stuff? They don't have anything except killing and destruction."
> You say "I just want to be a good mage"
"Yeah, well good mages don't kill people."
"I know, but I just want to be seen as a good mage."
He laughs. He tells you the location of his friend.
> You go to the friend.
The bard's friend lives in a small cottage on a hill.
You knock on the door. The bard's friend answers the door. He is an old man.
> You say "Can you help me fight the orcs?"
"Fighting orcs is easy. All you have to do is kill them. What do you need my help with?"
"I have a plan"
"Then come in, let's hear it"
> You say "We need powerful people to defeat the orcs"
"Yeah, and we have the most powerful people right here in Even'Era"
"What do you mean?"
> You say "Who are these powerful people?"
"Well, that would be me"
"You?"
"Yep, me"
"But you're just a regular guy"
"So?" You think.
> You say "What can you do?"
"Well, nothing special, I guess"
"I guess not."
"So, what's your plan?"
> You say "So can you fight orcs or not?"
"Sure, I can fight them, I just don't know if I can kill them."
"Well, that's the easy part, isn't it?" You think.
> You say "Do you have any powers?"
"Well, no"
"So why should I help you?"
"Because I'm the only one who can defeat them."
"You?"
"Yep, me"
> You say "How can you defeat them?"
"I don't know, but I do know I can help you."
"Okay, but where do we start?"
"We start by you telling me your plan"
> You say "I think you're lying"
"Yeah, a big fat lying turd. That's what I think."
"Look, I'm trying to help"
> You say "Can you defeat the orcs or not?"
"I can defeat the orcs, but I don't know if I can kill them."
"I can see why Euryphalia would be interested in your plan" You think.
> You say "I'm leaving, you suck"
"Yeah, you suck." You get up and leave the bard's friend.
You leave the bard's house and go back to your house. You go inside and the scene immediately changes.
> You say "How?"
A female figure, clad in black and red, with red hair, wearing a long, hooded cloak, a mask with a red, beaked nose, and an eye-patch, steps out from behind the curtain.
> You say "Who are you?"
"A queen"
"Of what?"
"A world."
"You're a fake"
"Maybe, but I'm still a better monarch than your sorry king."
> You say "What do you mean?"
"I'm the only one who can defeat the orcs."
"But you can't kill them."
> You say "Are you trying to help us?"
"Yeah, I can help you, but only if you help me in return."
"Depends on what the cost is"
> You say "How can I help you?"
"Well, there's a dark wizard in the West Wood who is preparing to attack Even'Era."
"Really?"
"Yeah, he's looking for a powerful patron to help him."
> You say "So if I help him will you help us defeat the orcs?"
"Probably not"
"Well, at least you can promise that you won't kill me" The Queen laughs.
> You say "What's your name"
"Kali"
"Kali, I am Kirumi Tojo. I am a student of the arcane and a great fighter"
"So you say"
> You go to help the dark wizard.
"Alright, let's go" You and Kali walk out of your house.
The two of you travel to the West Wood, the dark forest that resides beyond the village of Even'Era itself.
> You find the dark wizard.
You and Kali follow the path through the forest until you arrive in a clearing. There's a small hut there, the entrance to which is disguised by a large mushroom.
> You go into the hut.
Inside you see a man, hunched over a bookshelf, reading from from a tome.
"Who are you?" he says without looking up.
> You say "I'm Kirumi Tojo, a mage, and I am here to help you"
"What do you want?"
"I want you to help me defeat the orcs."
"Why?"
"Because I am the only one who can"
"I don't see why."
> You say "I am a powerful mage who can destroy the orcs with magic"
"How do I know that's true?"
"Because I'm a powerful wizard who is prepared to help you in exchange for your help in destroying these creatures."
"How can I trust you?"
> You say "You really can't"
"Fine, I'll make you a deal. I will help you destroy the orcs, but if we succeed, you become my queen."
"And if we fail?"
> You say "Why do I have to become your queen?"
"Because I'm not going to be a queen if I'm dead."
"Alright, fine, you'll be my queen." You agree to become the queen of this world.
> You go to fight the orcs.
You walk out of the hut, and step into a clearing. There are orcs everywhere, preparing to charge you with their large axes raised.
> You freeze the orcs.
You quickly freeze the large group of orcs in place, all but one of whom drop their weapons.
The one who doesn't drop his weapons is swinging his axe at you.
> You dodge the axe.
You move so quickly that you're only barely aware of what you're doing. You roll to the side, causing the axe to hit one of its allies instead of you.
> You explode the orc.
You fire a ball of light from your hands, causing the orc to explode. However, this distraction allows the axe-wielding orc to regain his balance and charge at you.
> You stab the orc.
With one of your hands, you stab the Orc in the chest. He falls to the ground, dead. With your other hand, you fire a fireball into the chest of another. He stumbles backward, screaming.
> You kill the other orcs.
You watch as the soldiers of the orcish kingdom fall to their knees, slain by the powerful fireball. However, this distraction allows a third orc to swing an axe at you.
> You slash the orc.
As the axe blade comes down towards your head, you raise your hand and fire a jet of flames at the axe-wielder. He screams as his body flails about, set on fire.
> You look around.
You are surrounded by the dead. Your allies and your enemies lie dead around you. You have no where left to run.
> You say "How did the others die?"
"By your hand, demon queen"
> You say "I'm not a demon queen"
"But you are a demon"
"I'm no demon"
"Well, not in the traditional sense"
"I don't know what you're talking about"
> You say "What do you mean?"
"I mean, I don't know how to close the gate to the infernal plane. I don't know how to raise the dead. These things I know because I'm not an evil being.
> You say "What is the infernal plane?"
"Forget about that"
> You say "Are all of the orcs dead?"
"No, there are still a handful of those big bastards who were too stupid to run"
"I can help you kill them"
"No, you can't. They're stronger than you"
> You say "I just killed an entire group of orcs"
"Yeah, but only because they were the first fools to get within your range. Once you close the gate, they'll have time to react. You'll only get one chance"
> You go to fight the orcs.
As you walk into the clearing, you see the orcs. Standing in a circle around you are several orcs, swinging their weapons, which seem to be made of bone. One swings an axe in a horizontal motion.
> You freeze the orc.
Your body immediately freezes the axe-wielding orc in place. Another swings an axe in a vertical motion. You fire a beam of fire at him. You freeze that orc in place as well.
> You trap all of the orcs.
You freeze the five orcs who surround you in place.
"I did it" You turn around to face the demon soldiers, who look at you in awe. Behind you, the gate is open.
> You say "What is going on?"
You turn around slowly, facing the demon soldiers. A female demon wearing a horned helmet stands in front of you, gripping a large trident.
> You say "Who are you?"
The female demon clenches her jaw, narrowing her eyes. "I am Calypso, an emissary of my queen"
"Your queen?"
> You say "Who is your queen?"
"I am the emissary of my queen, but I cannot answer your question. I can tell you that you are not the first to come to my plane.
> You say "Why are you here?"
"To slay the demons who corrupt my realm"
"Why?"
"To bring order"
"Why would you want to do that?"
"You wish to understand why?"
"Yes."
> You say "Can I help you?"
"No, I do not need your help. I know you cannot answer my question and I do not require an explanation of what is going on. I only require that you close the gate before this realm is destroyed"
> You close the gate.
A portal of negative energy opens up, forming a portal between your world and the demon realm.
> You say "Is that bad?"
"No, it's probably a good thing"
"Why?"
"Because this gateway can only be opened by a powerful demon"
"I don't know"
> You say "I'm not a demon, though"
"You are now, little one"
> You say "How?"
"You will find out soon enough. Now, leave this plane. You will only be needed here briefly. Once the portal closes, you will be returned to your own plane.
> You go home.
You awake in your home, having returned from your adventure on the demon plane. "Is everything alright, my love?" your mother asks.
"Yeah, I was just...reflecting on some things" Everything is as normal as ever. Your mother fusses over you and gives you a cuddle, and your older brother, Kyle, comes to check on you.
"Is there anything you're not telling us, kiddo?"
> You say "I have a brother?"
"I figured that part out for myself. Who was the girl I saw you with the other night?"
"I met her at a party"
"Is she your girlfriend?"
"No"
> You say "What is going on?"
"An army of demons is coming. They plan to destroy Zodan"
"How do you know this?"
"I saw one of their emissaries come through"
> You say "Oh no, not again"
A massive portal opens up.
