Work Text:
Memento System: Using items with sentimental value as a focus to bring about great power using one's faith. To create one you take a sentimental object and place it in a simple hand-drawn magic circle. When activated it connects to the foundation that does the heavy lifting of the process of changing the item into a Memento.
Foundation Core: The great magic formula that is engraved in the very world in order to manage the Memento System. It acts as a receiver and transmitter for the creation and management of Mementos. Through this, it is possible to receive data and send out updates to existing Mementos.
“Huh, why is it a bunch of crystals? Oh! Those are photonic crystals that act as a supercomputer of sorts. Hmm, not very magical is it? Hah, well we have to get with the times you know? Also, it’s a pain to extract data from and update a giant circle you know?”
Token: A trinket, bauble, memento, or a token. Those items that hold sentimental value to a person. An item that brings about memories, good or bad. Something that serves as a reminder of lessons learned. These items make up the core of the Memento. The intrinsic connection one holds with the item is what allows the user's Faith to be channeled properly. This changes it at a fundamental level allowing it to grow and develop with the user.
Note: It does not matter how high quality the item is, all that matters is the connection between the user and the item. The better the connection the more power one gets out of it. The childhood blanket will always win out over a newly forged masterwork weapon.
Functions
- Core: Acts as core managing various systems. Sends and receives data from the Foundation.
- Energy refinement and storage: Takes in ambient magical energies, refines them and stores them for future use.
- Material storage: Capable of storing various materials. (Amount dependant on user)
- Subsystem management: Manages any developed subsystems.
- Synchronization: Can synchronize with existing soul-bound items like Sacred Gears.
Memento: The physical manifestation of the Memento. It initially takes the shape of the Token but can change depending on the wishes of the user. Its potential is vast but requires the user to develop them.
Charm: The memento is able to absorb things into them to grant various effects that can be refined. These are not permanent and can be switched out. There is a limit if the memento is not strong enough to support it as it integrates concepts as well as physical traits. As an example, a fresh memento cannot absorb potent magical items without breaking.
Charm slots: Each Memento has a limited amount of slots that can be used for charms and other functions. Certain items or functions can take up more than one slot. To go beyond one's current slots risks damaging the Token. The number of slots grows as the Memento does.
The average Memento starts with four slots available. There can be more or less depending on one’s connection with the object used as a token.
When switching out charms progress is not lost but abilities will become inert until the charm is re-installed. New charms can use abilities from previous charms if the item is similar enough.
Charm Types: Most charms can be categorized into types based on the item used.
Calculation charm - Helps with calculations.
Weapon charm - Creates weapon templates.
Material charm - Applies material’s attributes to one’s Memento and transformed attire.
Magic charm - Grants affinity with a particular branch of magic.
Element charm - Grants an elemental affinity.
Charm combination: Certain charms can synergize to the point where they only take a single slot while granting greater benefits than by themselves.
Subsystems: Additional functions that are either auto-generated from user data or manually created. Multiple subsystems can be installed but they take up space similar to charms.
Transformation System: This allows the user to transform. This can just be one’s clothing to as much as their whole body. The clothes or armor are magical constructs and can be upgraded with Material charms. Takes one slot.
A.N. More abilities will be added with research.
