Work Text:
He and I stood in one of the mean testing chambers aboard the ark. We had just completed today’s round of tests but he stuck around me for a moment longer. He looked up to me and asked if I could spare him a moment. I agreed and he proceeded to ask his question.
“doctor, everything has a purpose. Like you do and so does everyone else here, but I can’t help but think… what is my purpose? What am I meant to do?”
how was I meant to answer that? I could have told him the truth, he was meant to be a weapon of great destruction. Unstoppable in every since of the word but he could take that as he was only made to kill and dominate. That’s how the project started, but that’s not what he is now.
I could just not answer him, but tat would lead to him ask someone else and who knows what they would tell him.
“Shadow…” I started, sitting on a near by chair and slipped my glasses off my face. “you were made to be the ultimate life form, a being of great power unmatched by anything.”
He looked away from me, out the window, and down to the people on earth. I could see the wheels turning in his head. He had this look on his face like I said something that had hurt him.
“with that being said-” I place my glasses back on to my nose and joined him by the window. “your purpose does not define who you are or what you are going to be. That is for you to figure out on your own time.”
I could see him looking up at me from the corner of my eye, watching me, so ready to take my words as truth and wisdom.
“your heart is pure Shadow, you have a soul so that means you have a choice. No one can tell you what to be. Not even me, but I can hope that you go down a path that is good and just.”
I look down to him, trying to give him a comforting smile. He smiles back at me, I can see his eyes going glasses, Even brings a tear to my own. I place my hand on his shoulder and he rests his cheek on my knuckles, gently holding on to my arm.
“I'll make you proud Doctor.”
“you already have my boy.”
to this day I truly believe I said the right thing to him, but we have yet to see if he has taken my words to heart.
