Work Text:
At some point in everyone’s life they were quirkless. Basically everyone has had a moment where they felt so weak. Like all of their dreams were so far out of reach. They still had promise and hope that they could do anything. All they cared about was getting a good quirk. A quirk that can and will define their future. Those with strong, show-off quirks are expected to become a hero. To protect those who aren’t as strong. If you get a quirk that can be useful in the medical field you are pushed to those fields.
Quirks have become the backbone of today’s society. To say that, that is problematic is just an understatement. Those without a strong quirk are pushed away from their dreams. Told that it is dangerous to work in the hero world. They could get horribly injured or even possibly killed. They would simply pass away and everyone would grieve.
Then there are those who are perceived to have a “villainous” quirk. Someone that developed a quirk that has the potential to be dangerous. They are treated as if they have done the worst thing in the entire world. When in reality they have done nothing wrong. They simply existed and unfortunately got their quirk. Due to a lack of training their quirk becomes uncontrollable. Accidentally hurting others simply because they don’t know how to stop. Being outcast and bullied because of their quirk. Eventually some of them turn to villainy. Whether it be because they want to change society or prove those who bullied them right. Or they would die. They would die feeling like nobody loved them. They would die alone and nobody would care.
And finally, there are those who are quirkless. Those that have no “special” power to help them along in life. Easily identified simply by the shoes that they wear. Those same shoes that paint a target on their back. A target that screams, “look at me and how useless I am!” This same target that so many people will take a shot at.
Discrimination against those that are quirkless is extremely common in society. Not many people believe that they deserve any rights. Due to this the statistic of those that are quirkless and have experienced a form of bullying is 100%. Meanwhile there are those that take the supposed easy way out of life. Suicide rates for those that are quirkless are 99.99%. Based only on this statistic it was about to become 100%.
A middle school child sits on a roof. The same roof that his idol crushed his dreams on. On the same day that his childhood friend told him to take a swan dive off the roof of the building, and hope for a quirk in his next life. Maybe there was a life after this one. A life where everyone would treat him better. A life where he would be able to become a hero. A hero who would help everyone no matter if they have a quirk or not. He would become a hero that would change the world and their opinions. But, there is only one way for that to happen. He really does need to die. He needs to die, if only for others to have a better life than he does.
Firstly, there are some things that he might as well do. Someone is going to eventually find him. That is basically a guarantee. Taking off his backpack, he looks toward the sky. When had it gotten so late? Oh well it is not like anyone is waiting for him at home. His father had left when he was diagnosed as quirkless. Leaving him and his mom alone with no financial support. His mom tries her best, but he knows that he is just a burden on her.
It isn’t her fault that they have been alone for so long. Quite the opposite actually. She has met so many people, and even some potential suitors. Looking back at the times his mother would come home gushing about someone will always be a fond memory. In all honesty it is all his fault that no one stayed. He would meet them, and get to know them. But, the moment that they found out that he is quirkless, they would suddenly disappear. He could tell that they stopped talking to his mom. She started to look more downtrodden and depressed.
The only friend that he knew that his mom had was Mitsuki Bakugou. The mother of his so-called “childhood friend” Katsuki Bakugou. That same “friend” that told him to commit. The same “friend” that has been bullying him for years on end. That same “friend’s” dream has been to be a hero.
He could ruin that same “friend’s” dream simply by writing a note. Writing a measly note that explains why he was driven to take his life. Writing in the note that a future “hero” has acted like a villain their entire childhood. But, what would that do? It isn’t going to change how others think about the quirkless population. That isn’t going to change what he is about to do.
He sat down. Ruffling in his bag he brings out a notebook. A notebook that has been burned, torn, drowned, and more. Flipping to a blank page he stops and quickly grabs a pen. Writing a short note, he tears out the page and puts it in his pocket.
Getting up he puts everything back in the bag. Taking off his shoes, he moves both his bag and his shoes near the edge. Climbing over the small fence he stops. It was quite a ways down. He turns around to face the roof. Might as well see a nice view while he goes.
Will it hurt? Will it be quick? Who knows, all he knows is that the pain will stop. Looking toward the entrance of the roof one last time, he thinks he sees something moving in the distance. Oh well, this is it.
Letting go of the railing, he leans back. The air is so warm and yet so cold at the same time. He closed his eyes for just a moment and there was suddenly something coming after him. It isn’t going to reach him in time.
In that moment he realizes he wants to live. He wants to see his mom happy again. He wants to see Kacchan, Katsuki Bakugou, become a hero. He wants to live just for another day. He wants it to get better.
Reaching out his hand up toward the sky, he hits the ground. It is sudden and jarring. He bounces. He falls back down. He looks up and feels wetness on his face. Then he is gone. Gone from this world that should have treated him so much better. An angel that was taken not by his own hands. He was just gone.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
Musutafu was quite a busy city. Everyday something was happening. Between people going to work, going to school, or even villain attacks, something was always happening. So, it was no surprise when someone found a giant stain of blood on the ground.
What could have caused the stain is unknown. All that is known is that someone had jumped. Their body was gone, but it was obvious via the blood splatter. It was barely on any of the buildings. If it was, it was only a few drops. A few drops that wouldn’t matter to anyone.
If you were unlucky enough to be walking by a set of apartments you would hear the cry of a heartbroken woman. A woman who was a mother that just lost her child. Her child that she tried so hard to let him have a good life. A mother that doesn’t know how to live without her son. Her son that she didn’t know was suffering so extremely.
She was told that he jumped from the roof of a building. A nearby underground hero tried to reach him. Tried to save him from his actions, but they weren’t able to get there in time. They saw her baby boy plummet to his death. They saw him regret his decision and reach up to be saved. They picked him up and tried to save him even still. Even though they knew that he was gone.
Eventually, news about what happened came out. A quirkless child boy committed suicide. His name was Izuku Midoriya. He lived his life idolizing heroes. He wanted to be a hero so badly, but it was just not meant to be. It was revealed that on his body was a note. A note that impacts society as everyone knows it. Because he, Izuku Midoriya, was the first quirkless person to leave a note. To even slightly let people look into the hell that quirkless people go through daily.
The note simply read, “I am sorry. I am sorry that I was born. I am sorry that I don’t have a quirk. I am sorry that I didn’t live up to anyone's standards. I am sorry to my mother. Everyone that she ever met left once I came into the picture. I am sorry that I am the reason that dad left. I am sorry to my childhood friend, Kastuki Bakugou, for ruining his reputation by being near him. I am sorry that you felt threatened by me existing. I am sorry that you felt the need to use your quirk to get me to obey you. But I am not sorry for committing. I am not sorry for taking his advice and jumping. I am not sorry, because I will become a hero in my next life. I will fix quirk discrimination against everyone.
Sincerely, Izuku Midoriya a.k.a Deku”
