Work Text:
Gaila adjusted the top of her little black dress, making sure all the necessary parts of her where accentuated properly. The bathroom door of her dorm opened. Her roommate stepped in the room and looked her over.
"Hot date?"
"Hot fuck buddy." Gaila turned and looked at herself in the mirror. "I think I overdressed but oh well. The dress won't be on long." Gaila looked to her roommate. She waved her hand in front of Uhura. "Look at you. Hot date yourself?"
Uhura blushed. She wore a red dress that stopped just above her knees. It wasn't revealing, very modest at the top but still sexy.
"Spock invited me out this evening." Uhura walked over to a pair of heels by her bed and slipped into them.
"But is it a date date or another friendly outing? Remember last time?" Poor girl had gotten dressed up only to sit with Spock had a café and discuss her latest research and nothing more.
"Yes," she sighed. "And I don't know. He said dinner and a lecture."
"But did he use the word date?" Gaila watched Uhura’s shoulders sag.
"No,” She side.
"Dude must be gay then," Gaila said. She turned around at her vanity and grabbed some makeup.
"Just because he didn't stare at your cleavage last month at the science mixer, doesn't mean he's gay."
Gaila shrugged, grabbing her purse. "Anyway. Have fun and I'll see you tomorrow."
Uhura grabbed hers as well. “Be safe.”
"You too!"
Gaila knocked on the apartment door. She posed seductively as she heard footsteps approach on the other side.
The door opened revealing the good doctor.
"Leonard."
"Gaila," the good doctor replied, looking her up and down appreciatively. "Is Jim expecting you?"
She frowned. "Yes. Why?"
"Bones, who's at the door...oh, hey!" Jim was pulling on a jacket like he was going somewhere. He looked quizzically at Gaila for a moment then those eyes lit up. "Crap, that’s right...we had…" his cheeks tinted pink. "Plans."
Gaila raised her brows and nodded.
Bones walked back into the apartment.
"Jim, you forgot."
Jim approached and looked sheepish. "Yes, but you see, I found out this scientist I've been following for years is in town and giving a lecture at the science museum and…" Jim stopped and gave her that thousand-watt smile that always got him his way. "Let's get dinner and go to the lecture together. Then, afterwards, I'll make up for forgetting."
“Damn right you will."
Jim let her pick the place, and because she dressed up, she chose a slightly swanky bar/lounge near the museum. They entered and immediately ran into Uhura and Spock at the hostess podium.
“Hey,” Gaila greeted her friend and roommate.
“Hey,” Uhura replied, before giving Kirk a look. “Kirk.”
“Uhura, always a pleasure.”
Gaila watched Jim’s eyes moved from Uhura to Spock. Their eyes locked. Jim stepped forward and offered his hand.
“Hi, I’m Jim. Jim Kirk.”
“Spock.”
“Vulcans don’t’ touch…” Uhura tried to get out, but Spock had already raised his hand and took Jim’s.
Jim snatched his hand back with a laugh, shaking it in the air. “Ouch, static electricity there.”
“I…yes. My apologies.” Spock put his hand back behind his back with his other.
Gaila and Uhura met eyes then looked between their dates.
“So, what brings you two here?” Uhura asked, stepping closer to Spock as Gaila wrapped an arm around Jim’s.
“Science lecture,” Jim said, eyes still on Spock and vice versa.
“Dr. Tremblay?” Spock asked.
“Yeah, do you know his work?”
“Uhura and I are attending his lecture tonight.”
“Same,” Jim blurted out then laughed. “I already said…yeah.”
Spock’s lips curled up in a small smile.
Uhura and Gaila looked at each other again. Uhura wrapped her hand around the crook of Spock’s elbow. “C’mon, Spock, our table is ready.”
“Of course.” Spock nodded his head towards Gaila and Jim but mainly to Jim. “Perhaps we will see each other at the lecture.”
“If I get there first, I’ll save you a seat.”
“If we,” Gaila corrected.
“Yeah,” Jim said softly, still eying Spock.
“Yes,” Spock agreed, still eyeing Jim.
Uhura pulled Spock along and off they walked. Gaila pulled Jim to the hostess podium and waited for her to return.
“Is that her boyfriend?” Jim asked.
“She hopes he’ll be.”
“So that’s a no?”
Gaila pursed her lips together. “No, they aren’t together. Why?”
Jim shrugged. “Just asking.”
Uh, huh, sure. “I can’t wait until after the lecture.” Gaila kissed Jim’s neck and pressed up against his side.
“Huh? Oh, right, yeah.” Jim craned his head away and looked into the restaurant. “Hey, there’s a two-seater next to them. Maybe we could join them.”
“I don’t…”
The hostess returned and Jim asked about sitting next to the Uhura and Spock. Gaila tried not to huff as Jim pulled away and followed the hostess without her. She paused a moment, staring at him. They were not dating. It was completely casual but damn if it didn’t hurt that his attention was elsewhere. Not that she could blame him. Spock was cute.
She sighed. I have a feeling I’m not getting laid tonight.
When she finally made her way to the table, Jim was already chatting with Spock again, standing beside their table. Gaila made eye contact with Uhura and mouthed ‘sorry’.
Spock stood. “Why don’t we join tables.”
“Yeah, that would be great.”
And without asking their dates, they pushed the two tables together. After some seat adjusting, Spock and Jim and ended up at one side of the now four-seater sitting across from each other while Uhura and Gaila sat across from each other next to their respective dates.
“Are you a cadet?” Jim asked almost immediately.
“A professor and Commander under Captain Pike,” Spock replied. “I will be his first officer once the Enterprise is complete.”
Jim grinned. “That’s cool and all but you see, that’s going to be my ship, so you’ll actually be my first officer when it is complete.”
Spock gave a small smirk. “Captain Pike has spoken of you. He says you plan to complete your time at the academy in three years. That is ambitious.”
“Well, I know what I want and I’m not afraid to work hard to get it.”
Gaila met Uhura’s gaze. They both now knew nothing was happening tonight with their dates. At least, not with them.
Gaila and Uhura tried and tried throughout dinner to get to topics to something they all could talk about. It would work for a bit and then Jim and Spock would go back to only walking to each other, like their date’s didn’t exist. By dessert, Uhura and Gaila were sharing a chocolatey concoction while Jim and Spock kept talking.
And talking.
Throughout paying for the meal, leaving, and the whole walk from dinner to the science center.
In the lecture hall, Gaila and Uhura took the reins back on their dates and sat themselves down: Jim, Gaila, Uhura, Spock.
But soon the whispers across the girls became too much, both boys leaning over their dates to speak to each other that Gaila finally just told Spock to switch seats with her which Spock gladly did, practically knocking the Orion out of the way to get close again to Jim.
When the lecture ended, Jim and Spock went up to the stage to speak to the scientist, leaving Uhura and Gaila in their seats.
“Boys,” Gaila sighed.
“Vulcan boys,” Uhura huffed. “He’s just so cute.”
“And so into Jim.”
“And Jim’s so into him.”
They both sighed.
After a while, Uhura and Gaila left and went outside, standing together and discussing their classes, waiting for their dates to remember they existed. It took several more minutes, but Spock and Jim finally walked out of the hall and over to them.
“Hey!” Jim said.
“Hey.” Gaila turned on the charm, wanting to try and salvage her date night. She wrapped her arms around Jim’s neck once he was close enough and pressed up against his body. “You ready to head back to your place, honey?”
Jim tensed up in her arms. Out of the corner of her eye, Spock was practically glaring at her. Jim stepped back, gently removing himself from her embrace.
“Um, gosh, I’m sorry but uh…Spock has this really cool telescope back at his place and I was kind of going to go check it out. I’ll totally make things up to you another time.”
“How about we all go see the telescope?” Uhura asked, also trying for a last-ditch effort to get Spock’s attention back on her.
“My residence is small,” Spock told her as he stepped close to Jim. “It would not be comfortable for all four of us. Another time, Nyota.”
“Right, of course,” she relented. “Another time.”
“Night you two,” Jim said, giving them a wave before walking off with Spock. Uhura and Gaila watched them. They walked close and almost seem to be holding hands before they turned a corner and disappeared.
“Didn’t you once say Spock lives in a penthouse apartment his parents own?” Gaila asked.
“Yep,” Uhura said looking at her friend and roommate. “Our dates left us for each other.”
“Well, at least they are getting lucky tonight.”
“Yep.”
Gaila wrapped her arms about Uhura. “I mean we can still go fool around.”
Uhura laughed then nodded. “Yeah, alright.”
Six Months Later
"You still haven't made up for forgetting our date or leaving me for someone else while on our date."
Jim sat beside her at a table near the Japanese gardens. He laughed and nodded. "You're right. I didn't." He looked off towards where Spock was standing with Uhura, chatting away about something. Every few seconds, though, Spock would glance their way and eye Gaila. He wore formal Vulcan robes and Uhura was in a summer dress. "Can't do anything now, either." He looked back to Gaila and gave her that thousand-watt smile again. "Forgive me?"
She smiled back. "Of course I do." She reached out and adjusted the label of his tuxedo. "You make a handsome groom."
"And you make a lovely runner up best man." Jim leaned forward and kissed her cheek. "Thank you for choosing the restaurant that night."
"You're welcome. Now, go back to your husband so he'll stop giving me looks."
Jim nodded and stood. "Save me a dance." He walked away as Uhura came back to the table.
"Our dates are married now," Gaila said.
Uhura sat next to her. "Yep. Completely smitten."
"They are perfect for each other."
"Completely agree."
They watched Jim wrap his arms around Spock and give him a kiss.
