Work Text:

Kate's hands and mouth are everywhere and Lucy is so, so close. Her body is begging her to let go; her brain, however, keeps circling back to the goddamn plushie sitting in the chair on the far left corner of the room and that just… cannot do.

“K-Kate, mmm, babe.” Lucy tries, Kate just hums in response, which, honestly, in the state Lucy is in, should've been enough to send her over the edge. But no, the fucking plushie seems to be staring hungrily right at her, stealing her focus completely. “W-Wait.”

Kate raises her head, concern written all over her perfect, beautiful face. “You ok?”

“Ghostface keeps staring at me and I cannot come like that.”

It takes Kate a few seconds to react. Lucy can see her pondering whether she should run for her gun or check Lucy's temperature. When the realization hits, laughter erupts out of the blonde's mouth.

“It's not funny!” argues Lucy, pouting, which just makes Kate laugh harder.

She doesn't know how long she lays there, arms crossed and a displeased look on her face, while her girlfriend laughs at her expense and her serial killer bestie considers having her as their next victim. She would not be dying naked.

And who the fuck has serial killer's plushie? Lucy thinks for what it feels like the millionth time.

She found out Kate was a huge Scream aficionado in the two nights and three days they spent together all those years ago when Lucy's knee accidentally turned on the TV and the 1996's movie was playing. Kate's yelp scared the shit out of the smaller woman, who was so focused she didn't even register the TV playing.

It was the longest hour in her life.

Not that she didn't appreciate the movie. She did. It was a great movie. It was just that she had more pressing matters to resolve. But fuck if she didn't think it was adorable how Kate could recite all the lines and looked so genuinely excited watching it. Thinking back, Lucy believes she might have fallen just a little bit in love with her right there and then.

As time went, Lucy began to learn more and more about Kate's little quirks regarding the franchise.

1  She not only knows how to recite the entire first movie, but all the other 4 as well. Even the fifth, the one that just came out. How? At this point Lucy is too afraid to ask.

2  From the ages of 14 to 17 she was Ghostface for Halloween. 'It's a timeless piece, ok? Besides, not everyone grew up in a mansion and could afford a new costume all the time.' Kate argued with a smirk when Lucy questioned her about originality and creativity. The brunette just rolled her eyes and let Kate have it for once.

3  Sidney Prescott was Kate's sexual awakening. It makes Lucy want to giggle every time she pictures a 12-year-old, wide eyed Kate Whistler watching Scream over and over again for ‘the plot’. If Kate was anything like Lucy was with Ripley, it's safe to assume that she had to get a new VHS pretty quickly after that discovery.

4  It was hers and Noah's thing. Which, if you stop to think about it, makes complete sense. It was his favorite movie of all time and the second he deemed Kate was old enough, they sat in his room under a blanket fort with a bowl of popcorn between them and watched it together. It became a tradition, a comfort thing while they both tried to escape their parent's screams for a few hours. When Noah left for the Navy, Kate kept doing it. When he died, it made her feel closer to him somehow.

So in all honesty, Lucy shouldn't be surprised by this newest addition to the list. She shouldn't. And yet…

On a random Wednesday, Lucy decided to show up at Kate's apartment unannounced in the middle of the night. Given the time, she doesn't knock, just let herself in with Kate's spare key. The apartment is dark with just the faint light of the moon sneaking through the blinds. Lucy strips from her work clothes and heads to the bathroom for a quick shower. When she is done, she doesn't bother searching for her pyjamas and gets into bed as quietly as possible so as not to wake Kate.

Joke is on her, though, because the moment her head hits the pillow is the moment her soul leaves her body and she jumps so high off the bed that she lands by the door, a scream halfway through her mouth. Kate wakes up panicked, hand immediately reaching the bedside table's drawer where she keeps her gun.

“Lucy?” She screams, “What the fuck are you doing?”

“What the fuck is THAT!!!” Lucy screams back, one hand pointing frantically at the bed, the other pressing her chest. Her breath heavy.

Kate's gaze follows her movements and Lucy can make out just enough of her girlfriend’s face to see she has the decency of looking a little bit embarrassed, though Lucy can also say Kate is trying her best not to laugh.

“Oh. This is Ghostface.” Kate answers bluntly while she raises one of the plushie's hands, – the one holding a knife, mind you – and waves it at Lucy.

“What is it doing in your bed?” Lucy takes a deep long breath trying to will her heart into its normal pace.

“Oh, well, I wanted to cuddle and you were working late so–”

“So Ghostface is the second best thing? Couldn't you get a pillow like a normal person?” The room isn't lit enough for Lucy to see Kate rolling her eyes, but she can, somehow, still feel it.

“It's soft!” Kate pouts.

Lucy gets up from her spot on the floor and makes her way to the bed. Before laying down again, she picks Ghostface from her girlfriend's arms and throws it on the floor, ignoring Kate's protests. The thing seems way smaller when you know it's an inanimate object and it is quite soft, not she is ever going to admit that to Kate.

"You are very very weird." Lucy says, shoving her face in the blonde's neck.

She feels more than hears Kate's soft laughter. "You love me."

“Starting to reconsider it.” Lucy responds, voice already slurring as her brain begins to shut off for the night.

Just when she is about to fall asleep for good, Kate murmurs softly, “Lucy?”

"Mm"

And then, in an excruciatingly bad Ghostface imitation, Kate whispers in her ear. 'What is your favorite scary movie?'

Lucy hand picks the first pillow it encounters and presses it into Kate's face. She can still make out the sound of her girlfriend's hysterical laughter, though.

After that one fateful night, Ghostface, the crochet plushie, made regular appearances around the house. Kate would, sometimes, place him in the most unusual places trying to get a scream out of Lucy. And the NCIS agent was very, very proud to admit that it only worked once.

She was even starting to grow fond of the thing. Fond or not, however, she was not going to have it watching her having sex.

Kate's laughter subdued as she gets up and strolls to the chair. She cradles Ghostface to her chest and says, in mock offense, "Ouch. You hurt their feelings."

"I mean, we can always not have sex. That is Randy's first rule of survival, isn't it?." Lucy weighs in, covering herself up and arching a single eyebrow in Kate's direction.

Kate's breath gets stuck on her throat and she lets Ghostface slip through her fingers into the floor. "God, it's so attractive how you know that."

Lucy chuckles as Kate walks back towards the bed and drops herself on top of the smaller woman. Lips meet pulse point, fingers meet heat and Lucy needs to make more Scream references if this is how she’s rewarded.

Notes:

every super well collected person has a weird (affectionately) obsession that they know everything about and no i will not be explaining myself.
