Work Text:
“Are you serious right now?”
Soobin didn’t want to believe the words that came from his boyfriend. He tightly gripped his phone, bracing himself to continue the worst call of his life.
“Yeah, I am. This just isn’t going to work out Soobin.”
“Why not?”
There was silence on the other end, lasting long enough that Soobin had to make sure he didn’t get hung up on. When he saw that the call was still going, he weirdly felt even more displeased.
“I said, why not Jisoo??”
“Fuck it, here we go.” He finally said something, but it wasn’t quite what Soobin was expecting.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“You wanna know why, and the easy way to put it is that you’re too goody.”
Soobin almost wanted to hang up himself, but he decided to stand his ground.
“No i’m not, wha-”
“Yes you are!! All of my friends made fun of me for dating you because you’re so boring. You never want to hang out with my friends or anything like that.”
“Your friends aren’t fun the-”
“No, you’re the problem Soobin!! Maybe if you just lightened up and took out the stick that’s shoved up your ass you could see how fucking embarrasing you are to be around! We’re in college, but it feels like you refuse to grow up and live your life for once. We’ve been dating for months and you won’t do anything with me or let me touch you, it’s really like I'm dating a child half the time. You’re a fucking coward and a prude that ruins everything and I can’t stand it anymore!”
He’s had enough.
“Coward? You want to call me a coward but you’re the one who’s breaking up with me through a phone call. You probably think you’re so fucking cool Jisoo, well if that’s the case go fuck one of your reject friends if you want the attention so bad asshole. We’re done!!”
Soobin hung up, making sure he got the last word. He laughed a bit in disbelief. Never once in the course of their relationship had Jisoo expressed any of those things, but here he was, saying his nasty thoughts that had presumably been building up for the past few months. It was true that Soobin didn’t want to hang out with his friends, but his friends were the worst. They all were trying so hard to be cool to the point where it just looked stupid. Soobin hated being around them because their idea of a ‘fun time’ was breaking glass bottles and throwing rocks at stray cats. Those weren’t things actual cool people did, literally no one does that. It’s like they all developed their personalities through watching bad American teen films from the nineties. Everyone in their university clearly thought the same, except for them of course. Soobin tried to ignore all of that when dating Jisoo, pushing it all to the side and focusing on their relationship.
It was true though, that he didn’t let Jisoo touch him. They kissed once or twice, but Soobin wasn’t ready to go any further than that. It’s not that Soobin hadn’t done these things before, it’s just that he was unsure about Jisoo himself. He liked him, but something always felt weird with him. All of the red flags were waving in Soobin’s face and he’s glad he listened to his gut this time.
Soobin knew that he was in the right, his ex was a dick, but part of him wanted to prove Jisoo completely wrong. Being petty won’t necessarily get him anywhere, but it would sure feel good. He decided to text Yeonjun for some assistance.
(S) Hyung, are there any parties tonight?
(Y) It’s been a while since you’ve gone to one. What’s up?
(S) Jisoo and I broke up, apparently I'm too ‘goody’ for him.
(Y) He really fucked himself over with that one, you’re way out of his league. There’s a party at Beomgyu’s tonight, 8pm.
(S) Thanks hyung.
(Y) Make his sorry ass regret it.
Soobin is a bit reserved and mature, but he is not inexperienced in the party scene by any means. He actually met Jisoo at a party, and after that he stopped going to any. This time however, it was going to be different. If Jisoo wanted to see this ‘goody’ disappear, then it would.
It was already late so he needed to get ready. Soobin went to his closet and tried to piece together the best outfit he could to make that bastard eat his words. Moving past all the casual blue jeans and sweatshirts, he went for all black. Sure, it was a bit cliche, but it works. He struggled to pull on ripped black skinny jeans, and then put a band tee over top. He decided to break out his black boots, giving him more height that he didn’t really need. He finished it off with silver jewelry that gave him the edgy look he’s aiming for. When he looked in the mirror he quickly realized that he needed to fix his hair. He took some hair gel and messily swooped his bangs back, leaving his forehead exposed. Perfect. It’s been a while since Soobin looked this hot, and it felt good, that’s for sure. Before walking out the door, he snapped a quick photo in the mirror. He knew that no matter what happened, it was going to be a night to remember.
It was barely past eight, but Beomgyu’s apartment was absolutely packed. The amount of people that were already drunk was impressive, but also laughable. Soobin pushed through the moving swarm of bodies, searching for Yeonjun in the chaos. Luckily his height served its purpose and he found his friend at a table, flirting with Beomgyu.
“Hey guys.”
Beomgyu looked nervous due to the boy clinging to him, but he still smiled at Soobin.
“Hey hyung, it’s nice to see you. Sorry, but also not very sorry to hear about Jisoo. I fucking hate that dude.”
Soobin appreciated Beomgyu’s bluntness in this instance. He wished his friends were like this when they were actually dating.
“Thanks, and I hate him now too!”
“Good to hear! Here, drink this.”
Without even questioning it, Soobin accepted the drink from Beomgyu. He chugged it in one go, ignoring the burn as the liquid flowed down his throat. Yeonjun applauded him, patting him on the back.
“That’s it, there’s the Soobin I know. Have fun tonight, okay?”
“I will.”
Soobin takes one more drink, gaining the courage to join the dancing crowd. The music drowns out his thoughts, allowing him to feel at peace for the first time that day. God, he missed this feeling so much. Being in a toxic relationship left him so wound up and he didn’t even realize it, but now he was able to let go fully, without any fear at all. That was until he began to hear whispers around him.
“Great, they’re here. Who even told them?”
“Maybe we should leave? They’re gonna kill the mood.”
When he looked at the door, Soobin was not excited to see Jisoo and his friends walking into the party. Even though he wanted to ‘prove himself’ to Jisoo, it was really meant to be metaphorical, he didn’t actually want to talk to him, or even see him. Quickly, he went over to Beomgyu who now had Yeonjun on his lap.
“Beomgyu, Jisoo is here. Where can I hide?”
“Aw man, I thought they wouldn’t find out about the party. They’re gonna ruin it. You can go to my room for now, it’s down the hall.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Before Jisoo even had a chance to spot him, he slipped into the hallway. Soobin went through the first door he saw and shut it behind him.
“What are you doing in here?”
Soobin jumped at the voice behind him, turning around to see where it came from. He only found Taehyun, sitting on his bed with a controller in his hand. This is definitely not Beomgyu’s room, there’s no…color. Taehyun finally got a good look at him in the darkness, recognizing the tall figure.
“Soobin?”
Immediately, the older boy felt embarrassed at his intrusion.
“I’m sorry, I was looking for Beomgyu’s room.”
He turned to leave, but his hand dropped before it hit the handle. How could he go back out there? What if Jisoo saw him?
“Taehyun, could you do me a huge favor and let me stay in here for now?”
There was a silence where Taehyun just stared, looking Soobin up and down before responding.
“Sure, why not.”
“Thank you.”
Soobin awkwardly stepped forward into the room, searching around until he found a chair where he could take a rest. Taehyun was playing his game again now and practically ignored Soobin’s existence. To be fair, they didn’t really know each other. They’ve met maybe once or twice because he’s Beomgyu’s roommate, but Soobin genuinely knows nothing about Taehyun. Well, nothing except for his reputation as the school’s ‘bad boy’. He was seen as the cool guy who dressed in all black, smoked cigarettes, and gave off a mysterious vibe. Taehyun was everything Jisoo and his try hard friends wanted to be. That’s another thing Soobin knew, Jisoo absolutely hated his guts. Apparently Taehyun is “a pretentious jackass that thinks he’s cooler than everyone else”, but Soobin realizes that his ex was likely just extremely jealous.
In all honesty, he wishes he’d met Taehyun before Jisoo, that way he could’ve seen who his boyfriend was trying to imitate and known better than to date the less hot knock off. Not that he necessarily wanted to date Taehyun, but there was no denying his attractiveness. He’s shorter than Soobin, but still has a tall frame that’s usually accompanied by a fitted black ensemble. His voice is calm and smooth, which is surprising for a smoker. Soobin didn’t even want to think about that one time Taehyun was wearing a sleeveless shirt, at least not while he was sitting right across the room from him. All of this to say, Taehyun is really really hot, and Soobin was feeling a bit nervous as he sat in his room.
“So, who are you hiding from?” Hearing Taehyun speak suddenly did not help his nerves.
“How did you know?”
Taehyun let out a deep chuckle. Soobin suddenly wished he drank more before all of this.
“Seeing how panicked you looked, I just assumed.”
“Well you’re right. I’m hiding from my ex.”
He’s not sure why, but telling Taehyun felt like the best thing to do. He kinda owes him an explanation at least for why he’s keeping a stowaway in his room while there’s a party ten feet away from them.
“Your ex…Jisoo?”
Soobin was surprised that Taehyun knew or remembered his relationship. He offered a nod as a response, and Taehyun scoffed, pausing his video game.
“Geez, that idiot. When did you guys break up?”
“Today, he called me on the phone and broke it off.”
Taehyun’s eyes widened, and he turned his full attention to Soobin.
“Wait, he broke up with you?? Why would he do that?”
“He thinks that I'm too good, that I don’t know how to have any fun apparently.”
Soobin thought Taehyun’s eyes would fall out from how far they rolled back in his skull.
“Well good luck to him, there’s nobody else in our school who’d even consider dating him. I wonder though, why did you date him in the first place?”
Why did Taehyun want to know so much about his relationship? A bit suspicious, but okay.
“I thought he was cool I guess. I now realize how wrong I was. I’m a bit embarrassed that I was upset about him dumping me but now I'm glad he did. Break ups can really show someone’s true character.”
“That guy has so many problems. It’s like he always wants to start something with me. I know he hates me, but I honestly don’t see him as a threat. It’d make him happy if he thought that I even give two shits about him. Good for you, getting out of that relationship. Maybe now you can find someone better.”
“Thanks.”
Being alone in the dark, neither of them speaking, kinda feels more comfortable now that they’ve talked a bit.
“He was wrong by the way, about you being no fun.”
Soobin just stared, waiting for the younger boy to continue speaking.
“Just because you’re nice and smart doesn’t mean you’re boring. You’re cool. You don’t need to change anything because of that jerk….but if you wanted to dress like that more often I wouldn’t be against seeing it.” Taehyun finished his sentence with a wink before standing up.
Unsure of what to do, Soobin sat there until Taehyun gestured towards a glass door.
“Would you like to join me?”
Soobin stood on the balcony with Taehyun, watching as he lit a cigarette and put it to his lips. It was a beautiful night, especially when you compare it to the scene inside. It’s quiet, like the whole world went to sleep just so he could calm himself down.
“Sorry I didn’t ask you, it’s okay if I smoke right?”
“Yeah, go ahead, I don’t mind.”
For some reason, when it was Taehyun, the smell wasn’t unpleasant. Mixed with the light breeze in the air and his cologne, the smoke was actually kind of nice. It felt different than when Jisoo did it, back then it was stuffy and suffocating. With Taehyun, it was freeing.
“Why do you smoke?”
Taehyun grinned at him, twirling the cigarette between his fingers before answering.
“Do you hate it?”
“No, I was just curious.”
“It just happened, there’s no reason in particular.”
Soobin considered asking if he could have one, but decided against it. That would be letting go a bit too much.
“Do you think being good is a bad thing Soobin?”
“What?”
“Like I said you’re smart and sweet, perfect really. But tonight you’re dressed like that and you’re standing here with me. Trust me though, even if you dressed how you do normally, and wore your thick glasses, it wouldn’t have changed anything that happened tonight. You still would be in my room, with me, just like you are now. Because you’re still you.”
His words played through Soobin’s mind. Did this really do anything? I mean, according to Taehyun it didn’t, but was it Taehyun that mattered right now? Well, kind of.
“Take my words as you will, I can’t really say shit on how anyone’s dressed, I just rolled out of bed.”
To Soobin, he looked mesmerizing, smoke falling from his lips, then fading into the dark blue of the night sky. His eyes trailed from Taehyun’s lips to his neck, outstretched, his adam’s apple protruding. How much he wished he could just- wait. He’s been looking too much, now Taehyun is staring back.
“You’re very cute Soobin.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No, it makes me want you even more.”
Did he really just say what Soobin heard?
“What?”
Taehyun threw his cigarette to the ground, stepping on it before moving closer to Soobin.
“I said, I want you.”
Any thoughts of his ex left his mind as he stood there with Taehyun, looking into his eyes.
“Really? But you’re like ‘the bad boy’.”
Taehyun’s hands slid to Soobin’s waist.
“Am I?”
The teasing smirk on Taehyun’s lips made them look even more kissable.
“That’s what everyone says.”
“Well, I'm not really that bad. You’ll see.”
The first kiss was gentle, luring Soobin into Taehyun’s touch. But as they went on, that sweetness mixed with smoke from Taehyun’s tongue and they became enthralled in each other. Taehyun pulled away, dragging Soobin back into his room, pushing him onto the bed. Soobin enjoyed this roughness, it was exhilarating. Taehyun leaned over him, capturing Soobin’s mouth once again. This time Soobin tried fighting for dominance in the kiss, but eventually gave in. He felt Taehyun smile into the kiss, leaving him breathless.
“Good boy.”
He’s done for. Soobin started to become rougher with his movements, tangling his fingers in Taehyun’s hair, biting his lips. Neither of them planned on pulling away until the door of Taehyun’s room unexpectedly opened.
“Sorry, wrong ro- SOOBIN?!?!”
Fuck, of course this had to happen. Jisoo stood at the door, anger flowing through him.
“Soobin what the hell are you doing?? And with…wait, FUCKING TAEHYUN?!?!”
Taehyun got off of Soobin, wiping his lips before addressing the intruder.
“Get out.”
Jisoo stepped forward, ignoring Taehyun, and went straight towards Soobin.
“No, I want a fucking explanation!”
“I don’t owe you shit Jisoo.”
“We just broke up and you’re sleeping around!”
The audacity this guy has.
“Why do you care? You’re the one who broke up with me, it’s none of your business what I do!”
“You were supposed to come back to me! You know you still want me, don’t deny it Soobin!”
Was this a game to him?
“Trust me I don’t, we’re done. Leave me alone.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
Taehyun stepped forward now, putting himself between them.
“I’ll make you.”
Jisoo scoffed and attempted to go past him once again, but this time Taehyun pushed him back.
“Stay the fuck out of this Kang.”
“I don’t think I will. Get the hell out.”
“Not without Soobin.”
Taehyun grabbed Jisoo by the collar before he could do anything and pushed him out into the hallway. Soobin rushed off the bed, following behind them out the door.
The conflict grabbed the attention of almost everyone at the party, except for Kai who kept the music going.
“I’ll tell you one more time, get out.”
Jisoo was on the floor, but that didn’t stop him from throwing a punch at Taehyun, who luckily dodged it. Everyone gasped as Jisoo fell to the floor again and Taehyun lifted him up by his shirt.
“Soobin is mine Taehyun, he loves me.”
“He’s not yours, he doesn’t belong to you.”
Hearing Taehyun stand up for him like this even furthered Soobin’s attraction. Finally, the music stopped and Beomgyu picked up a mic.
“Okay everyone, show’s over!! Clear out!!”
Taehyun shoved Jisoo down, but he's persistent. He swings at Taehyun again, but this time Jisoo’s face is met with a fist . Oh shit.
Everyone stood around, watching Jisoo squirm on the ground as Taehyun glared at the onlookers.
“You heard the man!! Get the fuck out!!!”
This time, people rushed for the door, clearly more scared of Taehyun than Beomgyu. Jisoo still layed there, staring up angrily.
“That includes you too.”
Taehyun crouched down to his level, speaking only for him to hear.
“And stay away from Soobin.”
Jisoo got up quickly and went with his friends who were frantically leaving. Attempting to salvage his image, he threatened Taehyun on his way out.
“This isn’t over Kang!!”
Yeonjun shut the door behind him.
“I’m pretty sure it is.”
Soobin walked up to Taehyun with watery eyes. Before either of them said anything, Soobin wrapped his arms around the other.
“Thank you so much Taehyun.”
Taehyun rubbed Soobin’s back, comforting him as tears began to flow. Soobin wasn’t sad, but all of his anger and frustration was now being released as he held onto Taehyun. Beomgyu watched them in disbelief.
“What the fuck was all of that about?!?!”
Soobin pulled away from the hug, looking at his friend with apologetic eyes.
“Sorry about ruining your party Beomgyu.”
This time it’s Yeonjun who asks a question.
“Okay, but what happened with you two?? How did Taehyun get involved in this?”
The two looked at each other. They weren’t sure what to say, but Soobin made his best attempt.
“Well when Jisoo arrived I went to hide in Beomgyu’s room, but I accidentally ended up in Taehyun’s. He let me stay and Jisoo walked in on us…talking and he lost it. Taehyun was protecting me, sorry it ended up like this.”
Beomgyu and Yeonjun smiled and gave each other knowing looks. Their ‘talk’ was still evident from their red lips and tousled hair.
“It’s alright. Seems like you two had a good…talk. Yeonjun hyung and I are going to clean up. You should go get some sleep Soobin.”
Once Beomgyu excused them, Taehyun pulled Soobin back to his room. He shut and locked the door behind him.
“I’ll get you some clothes to wear. You can sleep in my bed.”
“With you?”
“Is that a problem?”
“Nope.”
Soobin smiled as Taehyun left to let him change. Even after eating each other’s faces off he was being courteous. He let Taehyun back in when he finished, and they both flopped onto the bed. Soobin shut his eyes to sleep, but suddenly he felt Taehyun’s hands in his hair.
“I like your bangs down, it looks cute like that.”
Soobin just stared, making Taehyun laugh.
“What is it now Soobin?”
“Maybe being good really isn’t that bad.”
He closed his eyes again, only slightly hearing Taehyun’s whisper as he drifted to sleep.
“Maybe...but sometimes being bad feels so good.”
