The contact had been playful—closer in intent to a companionable pat on the back than an act of violence, especially coming from a man whose idea of a fun time was no holds barred sparring with Calico Jack until neither was able to stand straight in the morning.
But the noise that came out of Izzy’s mouth, unbidden and very much unintentional, wasn’t an appropriate reaction to friendliness or violence.
