take a moment to breathe

Summary:

Momo and Fine have a small moment to themselves to breathe. Just them, the air, and a truck that somehow hasn't given up yet.

Work Text:

The nipping cold bit gently at Momo's cheeks. She narrowed her eyes, bringing her scarf up further to her mouth. Even while wallowing in despair, she couldn't help but gape at the myriad of purples and pinks that danced across the tundra sky. The moon gazed down at them gently.

It was serene.

"The moon sure is beautiful, isn't it?"

Momo flushed- from the cold, obviously. She swiped off the vampire's hand. "Aren't you supposed to be asleep?"

"Mm. True." Fine smiled, "But how could I miss out on the view?" Despite her words, she kept her eyes locked on Momo. Tilting her head, she crooned, "Why, am I bothering you?"

Momo huffed, "Of course not." She continued to reel herself back underneath the truck that she was working on. It was truly a wonder that the thing even worked anymore. Considering how it went from being encased in ice for a few years to barreling down mountains and cliff sides.

Fine leaned against the side of the truck, staring down at her. Her white hair was tied up into a neat ponytail, which was quickly coming undone as silky strands began to glisten in the moonlight. Momo averted her eyes, focusing on the engine that had been sputtering since their escape.

Momo sighed, closing the lid. She studied to be in the military, and that didn't cover car maintenance in depth. "It should work for now. At least we can get to that city you were talking about.

Fine bounced over, smiling devilishly, "Great. Say..." She whipped out another cassette. "How about another singalong, Momo?"

"Of course."

They got into the car, huzzahing in excitement as the engine sputtered and roared to life. The cassette was quickly inserted by the vampire. Her nimble fingers tapped a slow beat on the steering wheel.

Momo breathed in the air, feeling like she could inhale the dusk air. "Fine."

"Mm?"

"What did you use to do, y'know." She stared at the passing frost trees, "Before the war started."

"Aha." She laughed, "I haven't thought about that in a while. Truthfully, by the time I was born the war had already begun."

"Really?" The girl hummed, "I thought vampires were super old."

Fine stiffled a laugh, "True. Some of us are ancient, I'm on the younger end. Still naive, is what the elders called me."

A rabbit hopped by in the rear view.

Fine let out a long nostalgic breath, cheeks pale unlike Momo- when she turned to look at the Warm, her skin was kissed by sunlight and mirth. She would look pretty swathed in moon azaleas and pink gowns. "I used to go on car rides, funnily enough."

"Really?" "Yes, really."

She kept her eyes on the road, humming the tune on the radio half heartedly, "Mm. My friend and I...we would sneak out of the nest and go trying to find new places to explore. Cars were some of my favorite things to find. We didn't know how to drive though, so we ended up crashing horribly sometimes."

Momo let out a soft laugh, "Did I do any better?"

Fine glances over at her, eyes soft and full of something Momo couldn't put a word to, "Yes. For your first time driving a car and driving it down a cliff, you did excellent." She tapped the roof of the truck, "This ol' girl is surprisingly resilient."

The vampire coughed, and Momo quickly opened up her bag to give her the cough medicine. Fine practically inhaled it, punching her chest roughly. "Are you okay?" Momo gently placed a hand over where the vampire's hand was- right in her lap. She looked up, gazing at a the girl's face, which was so painfully familiar and her eyes were so full of concern for her it hurt. Fine teared her eyes away, "Yes, I'm fine. Nothing a rough pat on the chest can't fix."

The air grew tense again, and the only sounds made were the rumbling of the engine. Fine coughed, "Say. What do you do for fun?"

"Me?" Momo sputtered. "I don't think there's anyone else in this car." The vampire teased.

The girl flushed, fidgeting with her hands, "Well." She sobered, "Me and Milena would drag each other around in sleds. I was usually the husky, and she would just yell 'Mush!' at me until I rebelled." Fine snorted. "She's my best friend."

"She really was amazing. Since she tried to help you back there." Reffering to when they first met. Momo smiled to herself, "Yeah, she really is."

The engine continued to rumble.

Notes:

I can not stand for the amount of abuse the cars get in the show. Smh. They deserve so much respect.
