Wright & Co. Law Offices
"Yeah? Okay, see you soon."
Phoenix closed his phone after the call ended, putting it in his pocket as he turned to the girl on his couch reading one of the many law books he inherited from Mia, appearing to be scrutinizing the contents in depth.
He had just come back from a recent trial that ended in a not guilty verdict for his client, however, it also made him tired, likely due to it running for three days straight and the amount of twists and turns he uncovered in that trial. So he came back to the office intending to fall asleep and wake up for dinner later at night.
He did not expect to find a girl with extremely weird attire on his couch.
At first, Phoenix thought she was someone who desperately needed a place to stay, but as their conversation progressed it became abundantly clear that she was out of her mind.
Or maybe he was the one out of his mind.
Soon enough, it was proven that the girl, Yanfei, was from another world and ended up here by accident. So, with much reluctance, though he didn't show it, he agreed to help her to try and get back to her own world, no matter how ridiculous it sounded. And to do that he decided he'll be needing some extra assistance, so he contacted Edgeworth and found out that he too stumbled upon one of the otherworldly people.
It was crazy to find that out.
I just wanted to rest after that exhausting trial...I never wanted to end up in this situation...ugh...
Phoenix walked over to Yanfei and sat down next to her, catching a glimpse at the title of the book she's reading: Courtroom Etiquette 101. I can't really seem to remember that one like the rest of my law books...
"These are nothing like the ones back home." Yanfei said as she snapped the book shut and placed it on the table in front of the couch. "Not that I mind, it's just that everything is not like I'm used to."
"Being from another world, which I'm assuming has drastically different rules compared to mine, yeah it makes sense you feel that way." Phoenix responded.
I still can't believe that... even with that fireball that appeared in her hand moments prior...
"Should've expected that." Yanfei shrugged, leaning back against the back of the couch. "Say, what kind of device did you use just now?"
"It's called a phone." Phoenix answered as he once again pulled out the piece of technology. "It's a way for people to call each other from far distances, and even text one another. Although I'm not a huge fan of it."
"Why not? It sounds like a really good creation." Yanfei tilted her head, looking curiously at his phone all the while. Like a little kid...
"It's just that I don't really know how to operate complex machinery." Phoenix said, putting it back in his pocket. "Still really convenient though."
"If only I had one of these back homes, it would make my job so much easier." The legal adviser said, a frown forming on her face at the mention of her job. "The number of clients I must have waiting for me..."
"I'm sure we can work something out in time." Phoenix still has no idea how to send her back, or even how she ended up in his office of all places, but he's willing to help either way. "Say, since you're essentially a lawyer in your world, how's life over there?"
"It's a demanding job, but it's also one I wouldn't trade away for anything else." Yanfei answered. "I always wanted to help others, and that was the perfect job for me." She looked up at Phoenix after telling her story. "What about you? Why did you become a lawyer?"
Phoenix felt a shade of red flood his face at the mention of his main motivation to be a lawyer in the first place. "Well... it's because of a friend."
"A friend encouraged you to be one?"
"You could say that..."
"I see." Yanfei smiled. "Were you always planning on being a lawyer?"
"Not at the start, no." Phoenix shook his head. "I actually wanted to be an artist, I even studied in the Art Department of my college."
"So, when did that career change come from?"
Before Phoenix was to answer the, honestly embarrassing, question, he's suddenly reminded of something. Edgeworth would definitely not want to see Yanfei like this, not that he had anything against her outfit, no matter how odd it looked, but there's no way his courtroom rival would accept it.
"We should probably get you into some new clothes." Phoenix said as he stood up from the couch, looking at where he kept his spare suits in the event his current one got damaged in some way.
"Huh? Why?" Yanfei asked as she followed after him, watching as he dug through the articles of clothing before realizing that none of them would fit her with her stature.
If only Maya was still here...she could borrow her one of her robes...
"It's nothing personal but...my friend who's coming soon probably won't like your outfit or the general public of my world for that matter." Phoenix said as he looked back at her.
"Oh yeah...this is a different world after all..." Yanfei sighed.
A knock at the office door made Phoenix freeze up, causing him to immediately take his jacket off and place it on Yanfei.
"You can wear my jacket." Phoenix quickly said as he pushed her into another room to put it on.
"This doesn't fit me either!"
"It'll have to do! Just do it!"
"Alright fine!"
I'm embarrassing myself...
