Work Text:
Yor found it a little weird on how her night came to running away with a doctor from his patients, but she found what came out of her lips was even weirder.
“Can we get married?” It was enough for the man beside her to stop in his tracks and fall on his face, which in turn made Yor panic as she thought of something to say. “Excuse me?” The blonde replied with confusion. Twiddling her hands together, Yor spoke her thoughts. “I mean as an extension for your condition, because an unmarried woman like me would draw suspicion…” Loid looked at her silently and still confused, as if asking for more of an explanation.
“What I’m saying is,” Yor continued with nervousness. “Instead of just the one time for the interview, would you mind if we… stayed together?” Even if she expected him to flat-out reject her, Loid showed her a genuine smile instead and got on his feet. “Then let’s stop by city hall on the way home and make it official.” Loid began checking every pocket he had as if looking for something and Yor looked at stared at him confused.
Just as soon as Yor forgot where they were and who they were running away from, she hears someone yell and she instantly tensed. They were cornered and armed, while she only had her knives coated with poison. She imagined pulling them out, but was reminded that these were simply Loid’s patients and she should do the least harm possible. She was lost in her thoughts when she got pulled aside by Loid with a large garbage bin to protect them. It was a bit difficult to process that she was sitting on her ankles with her hands grabbed by Loid’s as he started speaking. “I take you, Yor for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health. To love and to cherish…” She quickly glanced at the safety pin ring that he slipped on her left ring finger and looked back at him with surprise.
“… Forever and always.”
You didn’t mean it, baby.
Yor woke up in a frenzy when, in the middle of the night, heard noises outside in the living room. As to prepare for an attack, she inched slowly towards the door to not make any noises and opened a crack just to see what was going on. She didn’t expect to see Loid, in formal attire, moving around multiple suitcases.
“Loid? It’s so late already, are you still going out to work?” She noticed that he couldn’t look her in the eyes, fedora covering most of his facial expressions as he focused his gaze on the suitcases on the floor. “Yor, it’s late. You should go back to bed.”
“Ah, well, it is, but I was just wondering where you were headed.” She immediately recognized how he dodged her question, but shook her head when she thought about making a fuss about it. “You can trust me, Loid. I’m not going anywhere,” she slightly teased
Silence filled the room as he walked up to her and unexpectedly pulled her closer to him and laced his arms around her small frame. “Thank you for everything,Yor. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be all right.” She pulled away from him a bit to try to read his eyes, but he had the same close-lipped smile as if he was taciturn. Looking into his eyes became a different story; he held a guilty look and she slightly frowned at him.
“Where are you going?” She asked as he planted a kiss on her head and started completely pulling away from her to pick up the suitcases that were neatly placed just a few minutes ago. “It’s just a short trip with some of my co-workers. I’ll be back before you know it.” She nodded in acknowledgement and waved goodbye at him as he went for the door and quickly gave her a reassuring smile before leaving.
Little did she know, he would be gone forever.
"Is Papa home yet?" A little girl's voice rings around the small apartment they had. It had a good morning for Yor until then, even if she was absentmindedly stirring her cup of tea for a few minutes now.
It's only been around six months and thirteen days since the patriarch of the Forger household packed his things and left and ever since then, Anya has been asking the same question every morning. It was obvious the little girl misses her father and Yor would be lying if she said that she didn't miss him as well.
"Mama? Are you okay?" Anya's voice brought Yor back from a trance and she almost spilled the hot tea on the table. "Oh, I'm fine. And no, Loid hasn't come back."
Anya stared at her mother with her green eyes that started to get wet with tears. "Why'd he just leave, mama? Did I ever do something wrong?" She began to bring her hands to her eyes to wipe off the stream of tears that had only begun to fall and Yor got up from her seat and knelt beside the small girl to embrace her in a gentle hug. “Of course it’s not your fault, honey. I’m sure he loves you so much.”
What the matriarch didn’t know was that Anya knew why her father had to leave, but it didn’t mean that she didn’t miss him. Knowing he was a spy and was going to do bigger things, the grade schooler knew that there was more of a likely chance that he would never return back on their doorstep.
As Anya continued to cry in the arms of Yor, the brunette simply brushed her hair to soothe her. Even if it’s been a while, a child would still be shaken about it, which led to the umpteenth time they’ve sat on the floor in the same situation, crying about the same guy who left them. And it was always during this situation that Yor remembers how Loid looked whenever he was with his family. She finds herself reminiscing on how he always hummed happily whenever he got started on dinner and how he had the smallest, yet noticeable smile on his face whenever the family had their outings to "keep up public appearance". She thought about how Loid would always lift the bundle of joy of the household and congratulate her with the proudest smile whenever she did anything exemplary and when he would also carry Anya on his shoulders whenever she got tired during walks. Not to mention, when he always offered to cook dinner even after a long day at the hospital. These actions always led Yor to believe that he cared. But it seemed that he didn't care enough.
And even so, she couldn't help but forgive him anyway. She didn't have the heart to complain anymore. All she knew was that she misses him and wants him to come back no matter what. Plus, if ever he wanted to come back, she was right where he left her.
Over the years, she constantly had to try forgetting about the sudden disappearance of her partner, which proved to be quite difficult because of her co-workers. They, especially Camilla, made harsh comments about how they knew this was gonna happen because her husband seemed too hot to begin with or state how Yor was lacking in some way that made Loid want to leave her behind.
Yuri helped make it a little easier for her when she told him about it one day when he came to visit. He only made comments, saying “I knew I couldn’t trust him!” or “You’re too good for him, sis.” which made her giggle a bit about how much her brother was very protective of her. But she greatly appreciated how he was visiting more often and even helping Anya understand her studies more.
She was starting to learn how to live life without thinking or depending on Loid, so it came as a surprise when someone knocked on their door 2 years after.
