Notes:

Prompt: Don't Let Me Go

Work Text:

“Just admit it! You’re wrong!” Marinette insisted as she and Jon walked to their first period.

“I’m not wrong, you’re wrong!” Jon argued back as they entered the classroom.

“What are you 2 arguing about?” Alix raised her eyebrow at them.

“Jon thinks that one popular Daya song is called ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ when it’s really ‘Don’t Let Me Down’.”

“No, it’s ‘Don’t Let Me Go’, I remember hearing it on the radio.” Jon protested.

“The lyrics leading up to it is ‘I need you right now ’ which rhymes with down. Go doesn’t rhyme with now!” Marinette threw her hands up in frustration.

“Not all songs have rhyming lyrics!”

“Seriously?” Alix snorted, sharing a look with Damian.

“Tt, why haven’t either of you googled the title yet?” Damian asked.

“Good idea,” Marinette immediately took out her phone and searched up the song, “And here it is!” She shoved the phone in Jon’s face where it read ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ by Daya and the Chainsmokers.

“Oh.” Jon stared at the phone and then looked up at Marinette, a guilty smile on his lips, “Oops?”

“You know I’m never letting you forget this right?” Marinette tucked her phone back in her pocket as she smiled at Jon.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t say that.” Jon groaned.

Marinette’s smile turned into a mischievous grin, “Let the fun begin.”

It started off simple enough, post it notes with ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ written on them and slid to him in class. Eventually little drawings accompanied the messages. Soon she had been able to get ahold of his notebook and would write it in between his notes, which led to moments like this.

“Hey Jon can I borrow your notebook for a second?” One of his classmates asked him.

He handed it over without a second thought and went back to reading. Not a second later his classmate was tapping his shoulder.

“What’s this?” They were pointing at one of Marinette’s ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ messages.

“Nothing, an inside joke.” He responded.

“Inside joke?”

“It’s all her fault.” He pointed at Marinette who was a couple seats over. Out of the corner of her eye Marinette saw him pointing at her and turned around raising her eyebrow. But then she caught sight of his notebook and understood what they were talking about. She gave him an innocent smile and waved at his classmate before turning back around in her seat.

“Ohhh I get it now.” His classmate gave him his notebook back but their statement confused Jon.

“Get what?”

“Thanks for letting me borrow your notebook.”

“Wait what do you get that I don’t?”

-

Eventually she got bolder and stopped just writing the message, like now for example.

“Jon! Jon!!” Marinette ran up to greet her best friend.

“Yeah Marinette?” Jon turned around as Marinette wrapped him in a hug. She looked up at him, placing her chin on his chest and with one of her signature innocent smiles on her face asked.

“Don’t let me go to class alone?”

Jon rolled his eyes, “Never, now let’s go to class.” He picked her up and placed her over his shoulder despite her protests, “You’re not wearing a skirt today, it's fine.”

“Are you really gonna drag me to class like this?” Marinette punched his back, it didn’t do much.

“You said not to let you go, that’s exactly what I’m doing.” He explained as they entered the classroom. Upon entering he set Marinette down but that did nothing to quiet the whispers that had started. The pair went and joined Damian and Alix at their table with Damian rolling his eyes at them and Alix shaking her head.

“So did you 2 finally get together?” Alix bluntly asked.

“I’m sorry what!” Marinette whisper-yelled at the same time Jon said.

“Excuse me!”

“Then what was that little stunt you just pulled?” She smirked.

Marinette blushed furiously and stuttered out an incoherent response while Jon thought of an answer.

“It was nothing.” Jon stated, trying his best to not make eye contact with anyone at the table.

“Sure.” Alix gave him a very not subtle wink.

Damian scoffed, going back to writing down additional notes and muttering under his breath, “And people think I’m the oblivious one.” Everyone at the table heard him and both Jon and Marinette glared at him.

“We are not having this conversation with you 2 around.” Marinette finally found her voice.

“But you will have the conversation?” Damian didn’t even bother looking up from his notebook.

“Class is starting, we should pay attention.” Marinette said before either of them could answer. She kept her eyes on their teacher and didn’t look back on Jon the entire. She was going to avoid this conversation at all costs, or attempt to at least.

When the bell rang she packed her stuff at lighting speed and was about to leave when Jon’s hand grabbed her wrist. Alix stayed at her seat, not even bothering to hide the fact she was watching them until Damian grabbed her and dragged her away.

“Jon,” Marinette started nervously, “What are you doing?”

“Don’t let me go home without talking about this?” Jon held her eyes and only when she nodded did he let go of her wrist.

Marinette left the room as Jon finished packing, she was never good with her feelings so she was not looking forward to their inevitable talk.

“Marinette!” Jon laughed at the girl who had just jumped on his back.

“Don’t let me go Jon! Don’t let me go!” Marinette clung to him as she slowly slipped off his back since he was not prepared to hold her. She landed on the ground and playfully glared at her now boyfriend, “I said don’t let me go Jon.”

“I can’t exactly give you a piggyback ride or hold you for that matter if you don’t give me a warning.” Jon helped her back up.

“Yeah yeah this is your warning!” She smiled as she jumped into a now prepared Jon’s arms and shouted, “Don’t let me go!” Over and over as he spun her around. When he finally put her down Alix and Damian were standing near them.

“I can’t tell if it was worse when you were both oblivious of each other’s feelings or now that you’re actually dating.” Damian stated.

“Part of me regrets helping you 2 get together, especially when you have to act all coupley like that.” Alix looked at them in disgust.

“Well since we’re a couple now you have to deal with us doing coupley things.” Jon put his arm around Marinette’s shoulder which got them a fake gag from Alix.

“I’m so glad the year is almost over, then I can go to a college far away from both of you.” Alix narrowed her eyes at the couple.

“Hey on the bright side at least you haven’t ever seen us make out.” Jon commented, earning a slap on his arm from Marinette.

“Ok on that note I’m heading to class early. Do not follow.” She pointedly told Marinette and Jon, she then turned to Damian, “You coming?”

“Anything to get away from them.” He replied, walking with Alix to their next class.

Marinette just giggled at their friends before turning back to Jon, “Now that they’re gone I believe you mentioned making out earlier?”

“I believe I did.” Jon agreed as he led the 2 of them away to a more private place, they still had 10 minutes before the bell rang anyways.

-

The maid of honor and best man walked side by side down the aisle. The last pair to do so before the bride walked down. When they reached the end Alix moved down to where the rest of the bridesmaids were while Damian moved to stand next to a very nervous groom.

“What if she ends up getting cold feet?” Jon whispered to his best friend.

“Not going to happen.” Damian assured him.

“How do you know?”

“If she was able to stay with you throughout your horrible college breakdowns, “He gave Jon a pointed look, “She’s not going anywhere.”

Just then the music that signaled the bride was coming started playing and the doors opened. Marinette stood there seeming just as nervous as Jon which helped ease his nerves a tiny bit. She started walking and Jon took the time to admire just how beautiful she was, how lucky he was to be able to call her his wife soon.

Marinette reached the end of the aisle and handed her bouquet off to Alix who gave her an encouraging smile. After some unimportant stuff neither Alix nor Damian could bother to remember they got to the vows. Jon went first.

“Marinette, as you know I’ve never been the best at writing. You saw the grades I got on my essays in English, so this is gonna be a little shorter than a normal vow. I love you. I’ve loved you since we met each other freshman year and you had to keep asking me for an extra pen. I’ve loved you since sophomore year when my feelings for you switched from platonic to romantic. I’ve loved you since junior year when you would have an existential crisis everyday not knowing what you were gonna do with your life. I’ve loved you since senior year when we had that long and boring talk that resulted in you becoming my girlfriend. I’ve loved you during all my college years where you stuck by my side no matter how many times I called you whenever I had my doubts that I would fail a midterm or final or project. And I will continue to love you for the rest of my life.” He looked up from the paper where he wrote his vows to see Marinette had tears falling from her eyes, quickly trying to wipe them away before they ruined her makeup.

“Well as someone who was also never a writer my vows might be even shorter.” Marinette gave a playful smile at Jon before reading from her paper, “I’ve never been good at talking about my feelings. Whether it was talking about them or writing about them. You have first hand experience with that Jon, I still remember our talk in senior year. And I still never wanna do it again despite the fact you ended up my boyfriend because of it.” That got a couple laughs, her soon to be husband included, “The truth is I love you Jon Kent. I will always love you. Words will never describe how much I love you and will continue to love you. Because of my infinite love for you I promise that I will never let you go and in turn I ask you,” She looked up from her paper to look him in the eyes, from the way his smile widened he already knew what was coming, “Don’t let me go?”
