Next Time

Summary:

Set after 'Heat Up! Kamiyama High Cheering Squad!'

Ena patches Mizuki up after they fell during their competition against Akito.

Notes:

I loved 'Heat Up! Kamiyama High Cheering Squad!' so much oh my god. I got to see my favorite trio of friends (Mizuki, An, Rui) spending so much time together, we got absolutely amazing MizuEna food and above all else, WE FINALLY GOT TO SEE MORE OF MIZUKI BEING TRULY HAPPY. I need more of it ;-;

So I wanted to write some MizuEna fluff set after it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Mizuki would be the first to admit that they did many dumb things in their life so far. Letting themself get distracted by Akito running with Tsukasa on his back, instead of looking where they themself were running, was definitely a new thing to add to the pile. Fortunately, the wound they got from falling wasn't a deep one, it was just a scratch that they didn't even feel when they got back on their feet, trying to catch up to Akito. Unfortunately, Ena definitely seemed to have noticed.

"You could have gotten seriously hurt, why are you such an idiot?"

Due to the festival still being on going, there were currently only Ena and Mizuki in the nurse's office, as the school nurse was overlooking the other students. Thankfully the medical supplies were easy to find, so Mizuki was currently sitting on a bed while Ena was bandaging their arm.

"But I mean, that's not a sight I get to see every day, of course I would get distracted." they whined, even though they knew Ena was right. Usually they would try to come up with a witty remark, but the combination of losing to Akito and making Ena worried made them hesitate.

Besides what she said as she dragged Mizuki to the nurse's office, Ena has been unusually quiet as she patched them up. Sure, angry Ena was not something Mizuki wanted to deal with now, but when she stayed quiet instead of reprimanding them, that's when Ena became scary. As time passed, Mizuki started playing in their mind all the ways they could make her forgive them.

"Enanan, don't be angry? Please? I promise to be careful next time, and-"

"Can you shut up for a second? I'm trying to focus." Okay, so maybe talking with her wouldn't work. Their wound really wasn't deep at all, Ena just needed to clean it and bandage it up a bit, it's not like talking would distract her, but...she sure was gentle as she was taking care of them. It made Mizuki feel warm all over, even as a part of them was worried over Ena being upset with them.

After a few more moments, Ena slowly patted their bandaged arm as she finally lifted her head, making eye contact with Mizuki and looking surprisingly calm.

"There."

"You're...not angry?" they asked as they broke eye contact, looking at their neatly patched up arm and moving it a little, trying to see if it hurt, but it didn't. Maybe breaking eye contact was a bad idea because before they knew it, they could feel a flick on their forehead.

"Why would I be angry? You're making me more worried than anything, you're more clumsy than I thought."

"Hey-" Mizuki raised their head to protest, but their words immediately got stuck in their throat as they were met with Ena's smiling face.

"But...it was good to see you having fun."

Oh.

The day has been so hectic and full of activities that Mizuki never really had the chance to truly process it. When was the last time they just forgot about all their worries like this? When was the last time they got the chance to just spend a day with Rui and An, having fun without anyone bothering them? Yeah...today was fun, it really was fun. They let a smile form on their face, matching Ena's own as they rubbed the back of their head.

"Heh, if only I hadn't lost to li'l brosef." Mizuki would be lying if they said they didn't feel at the very least frustrated, especially with Ena helping them.

"You just have to make sure you'll beat him next time." Ena knew how much weight those words held, Mizuki knew she did, her eyes told them just as much, but...Thinking back on it, they didn't hesitate in the heat of the moment to tell Akito "If there is going to be a next time, I won't lose". Now when they thought Ena was angry as well...When did thinking of the future stop feeling so scary? They took a deep breath, the smile on their face just naturally growing as the words that would have once felt so suffocating easily slid past their lips.

"Yeah, next time I will kick his ass." They would make sure to keep up on that promise, if not for themselves, for hearing the chuckle that Ena just let out when they said that again.

The silence that fell over them this time was a comforting one, as they basked in each other's presence until Ena's face suddenly turned serious.

"Ena? What's wrong?"

She didn't say anything, just staring at Mizuki for a while until seemingly making up her mind on something.

"Hey Mizuki, close your eyes."

"Huh?" they tilted their head in confusion. What was she trying to do?

"Just...do it." They couldn't say they understood what she was trying to get at, but she seemed serious and they had no reason not to trust her, so they complied. A few seconds passed with nothing happening, and they were almost about to open their eyes and ask Ena if everything was alright, until they felt a small pressure on their shoulder, Ena's hand?, and something soft pressing against their cheek.

It was quick, disappearing as soon as it came. It took Mizuki a couple of moments of processing until it hit them as they felt a blush slowly creeping up their neck and coloring their cheeks. Was that...?

The moment they opened their eyes, trying to confirm what happened, Ena wasn't in front of them anymore. Turning around they saw her already in the doorframe, her back turned at them.

"Take that as a consolation prize...Let's go, until the others get worried." Despite Ena having her back turned at them, they could still see the blush on her ears. She didn't give them a chance to reply, immediately stepping out as soon as she said those words, leaving Mizuki a flustered mess as they held a hand to the cheek Ena kissed.

They would have screamed if the whole school wouldn't have heard them. Ena really was unfair, suddenly doing stuff like this and taking Mizuki by surprise. They knew they couldn't leave yet, having to wait until their blush died down, they really didn't need the constant teasing from An and Rui if they saw them like this.

Notes:

I will update Our Hearts, Our World soon too, but with Stray Bad Dog coming on Global, it might take me a bit longer to update it until the event finishes because I want to finish t100 in it (right now I'm only t300 ;-;)

So until then, I wanted to write some quick MizuEna fluff.
