Work Text:
At around eleven o’clock, after two hours of attempting to sleep, Matthew finally gave in and picked up his phone from the bedside table.
“You should be sleeping, big game tomorrow” Leon greeted him after the second ring, his voice instantly soothing to Matthew, even over the phone.
“I could say the same to you” Matthew replied, shifting his body under the covers to find the most comfortable position.
“Eh, easy win for us, I don’t need to be that rested.”
The statement startled a laugh out of Matthew.
“Cocky bastard,” Mattew replied, trying and failing to keep the fondness out of his voice.
“You know it, baby.”
A few minutes passed in comfortable silence, as Matthew listened to his boyfriend’s steady breathing.
“I miss you.” Matthew finally admitted.
“I miss you too.”
“This is so fucking unfair.” Matthew sighed heavily.
“I know baby, but we knew this matchup was a possibility. Remember, this is just our job at the end of the day. We go out there, give it all we got for our teams.”
“Promise me you won’t hate me?” He couldn't help how his voice shook when he asked the question. The fear of losing Leon was just too much for him sometimes.
“Win or lose, it won’t change how I feel about you, I promise. Win or lose, I love you more than anything, Matthew.”
Matthew felt tears well up in his eyes, and he furiously tried to blink them away.
“I love you too, Leon. Win or lose.”
“Time for sleep now. Gute nacht mein liebling.” Leon whispered into his phone.
“Gute nacht mein schatz” Mathew replied, finally allowing his body and mind to relax, and sleep to overtake him.
