Another Hands

Summary:

SPOILERS FOR CLOUDS ON THE HORIZON.

Hunter comes to a new realization about themselves when Gus casts an illusion.

Notes:

Based off this little moment of Hunter looking at Luz's hands from the episode.

Not sure what the general practice is for fics like this- as a trans person myself, the claiming and swap of new pronouns in the text feels right to me, but you might have a different opinion.

Work Text:

Hunter was never fond of his hands. His were rough, calloused, they never felt like his own. Even before the truth came out about his origin, Hunter never quite felt right in his own body in many different ways. He tried to hide his hands whenever he could- always with some sort of gloves. Even now, he was wearing leathery brown replacements offered by Willow that were meant for Grudgby.

It was a surprise to have a different set of hands.

He held up his "new" hands- examining them. Maybe it was because it wasn't his, but he was hit with the realization he liked these much better.

Which struck him as rather odd when he realized Gus had cast an illusion over him and Luz, switching their physical forms.

Forever he was told that there was no say in his physical appearance. He was okay with that when it came to wearing the Golden Guard outfit, and even little bits of pride when he found ways to make it his own, either by incorporating the old symbol or the shoulder pauldron. Even when he was free of Belos breathing down his neck, he still retreated to making a makeshift copy from what he could find. He even attempted to make his own replacement mask by shoddily cutting a hole through a pan.

Looking at Luz's hands now, he felt something wash over him.

He was always defined by someone else's body and Belos' expectations there forth, but what if... he could change it?

It was a realization he couldn't quite take lightly, but he would have to play the part of Luz and he didn't have the time to process all of this.

And for some realization, that excited her.

Her. That felt right. Hunter chuckled to herself. Well, she'd have to do something about the name as she'd grown quite the disdain for it. She'd talk to Gus about a more elaborate illusion to experiment more.

Time would come. As she watched Alador go through the doors of the factory, she realized that it was probable that something was about to go down. If Luz had talked to Gus and convinced him to do this illusionary swap, she must have been convinced that Hunter would be captured. The last thing Hunter wanted right now was to see Belos again.

Thanks, Luz. You did more than you ever knew.
