There is no universe in which Giorno Giovanna does not throw himself from the cliff behind his seaside mansion before he has the chance to turn thirty. It is ten o’clock right now, on April 16th. He will be twenty-nine for an hour and fifty-four more minutes. He has an hour and fifty-four more minutes to decide whether he can go through with this.
There’s still time. He can still go back. Fold unnoticed back into the crowd, go home and put this dreadful business off for another decade. A decade is a terrifyingly long amount of time. A decade ago he was nineteen, four years in, still learning all the etiquette. It took an unbearably long time for him to nail down his right to rule, to learn when to stop giving and start taking. And a decade is double the length of an unbearably long time.
