They had been pushed together by nothing else but loss and had settled into domesticity not to be envied by any. Daily routines were all that held that shell of their mating bond in place, and Elain cannot help but project the dreams the fox has at night of his own what-ifs, of the firebird taken from him too soon. Elain had long since ceased attempting to prevent visions of her own loss, of the shadows which she had once called friends. She had not seen him for more than mere seconds since Solistice, although she thought of him as much as she knew Lucien dreamt of Vassa. They do not speak of it, just continue to do as they are expected to.
Not until Elain began to have visions of the deathless, and the shell of her beginning once again to thrum with the hope that she may be able to do something useful after all.

Post ACOSF, decades later, Elain and Lucien both accept each other as second choices, with Vassa once again being confined to the lake and Azriel never leaving his shadows. Slow burn! Angst!!
