"Let's go shopping."
Erik rolled his eyes. "Why do you always want to go shopping? It's not like you need anything new."
"I just think it's fun. And don't say something about how the money could be better spent elsewhere. You know damned well that I've pledged ninety percent of the Xavier fortune to charitable and social causes."
Erik knew, and if anything had been able to make him love Charles more than he already did, that act would have done it. "It could be ninety-five," he said, mostly teasing.
"If I didn't have to support my mother and her no-good husband, it would be."
Ugh. Erik wasn't about to get started on Sharon Xavier Marko and the way she treated Charles, her gay disabled mutant son.
"So can we go shopping?" Charles turned the full power of his cornflower-blue eyes on Erik.
"Like I could ever refuse you for long, no matter how much I hate shopping."
Charles grinned. "I'll make it up to you."
"Can we take the Mustang?" Erik's favorite of Charles' collection of classic cars, all Detroit steel and horsepower.
Charles nodded. "As long as I get to drive one way."
Erik grinned in anticipation — Charles liked speed nearly as much as Erik, and he was the only driver other than himself that Erik truly trusted. "I'll make sure the controls are in the trunk." Portable hand controls that let Charles drive any car with an automatic transmission.
"I'll meet you in the garage. Five minutes?"
"Five minutes."
Maybe ten minutes later they were on the road, Erik behind the wheel, speeding down the country lanes on their way into the city. And about a half hour after that, Erik was pulling into a parking space at the upscale mall Charles favored.
"You will let me buy you something, won't you?" Charles asked as he pulled his wheelchair frame from the back seat and attached the wheels.
"If you must," Erik grumbled. "I was hoping you'd just let me hide out at the bookstore while you shopped."
"Not today. I want your opinion on a few things." Charles transferred into his chair and settled his legs on the footplate.
Erik sighed, but his smile was affectionate. "I had to try."
Charles gave him a warm smile. "I know. Now come on."
Erik trailed along behind his husband, for whom he would truly do anything. Even go shopping.
