boarding for sanity

Summary:

everything would have been all fine if it wasn't for the fact that sunoo's heart always beat rapidly if sunghoon's does so much as to look and smile at him. it certainly doesn't help that they were stuck in the same room and sharing the same bed.

or; sunsun sharing one bed in their hotel in germany because Oh, they were roommates.

Notes:

after the whole revelation that not only were sunsun roommates in germany, there is that off chance that they indeed only shared one bed. i have had this fic idea brewing in my mind since this morning so i sat here and decided to binge write it. i'm gonna be completely honest i have NO idea what i wrote nor have i read thru this but it's almost 1 am as i'm typing this. i'll realise how bad this is in the morning.

in the meantime, enjoy reading :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The flight to Germany was not everything Sunoo ever expected. The longest he’s ever been on a plane was when they went to Jeju a while back, but that doesn’t really count when it wasn’t even a two hour flight.

This, however, was the worst thing ever.

First, his ears started ringing as the plane began to take off, and despite Heeseung’s advice to chew gum to get rid of it, Sunoo’s found himself sporting a nasty headache for the first 30 minutes of the flight.

Second, Sunoo hasn’t been able to catch a single wink of sleep at all, even with the comfy first class chairs and blankets. It’s not too bad though, he figured he’d just watch a movie on the mini screen.

Besides the interesting experience, Sunoo was still beaming with excitement. It was his first time overseas afterall, and knowing that he has the chance to travel to Europe with his members was the best part. He looks over the top of the chairs, watching each of the members. Most of them were asleep, except for Sunghoon and he – who had his phone out and was filming something on the little monitor. Curious, he reached forward and tapped the top of Sunghoon’s head, glad that the older boy was sitting right in front of him.

“Hyung, what are you doing?”

Sunghoon looks up, noticing Sunoo hovering over his chair. “Hm? Oh, I found our songs on the plane catalogue! Isn’t that cool?” Sunghoon doesn’t bother to hide his amusement as he eagerly shows Sunoo his discovery. A dimple shyly pokes the boy’s cheeks, and Sunoo notices that he wasn’t wearing his tank top from earlier anymore. He wonders when the other went to change out of it, but he doesn’t bother asking.

Not when Sunghoon was suddenly grabbing his hand from behind and bringing Sunoo to stand next to him.

“Look, they have our Japanese releases. That’s so cool! I never would’ve thought I’d find our music here,” Sunghoon whisper-yells, still holding onto Sunoo’s hand as he waved it around as he talked. Sunoo decides to take the chance to tease the older boy, smirking slightly. “Hyung, you forget as if we aren’t celebrities. Of course people are going to start putting our music in plane catalogues.” Sunghoon only rolls his eyes at him playfully.

Sunoo shakes his head, slowly shifting back to his seat when Sunghoon calls out for him again. “Sunoo-yah, you should try to sleep. We still have hours before we reach Dubai.” The latter sits up on his chair, hand reaching out to ruffle Sunoo’s orange hair. Sunoo smiles at him warmly, and hopes he’d get to hang around Germany with Sunghoon.

Performing in Germany was definitely the best thing Sunoo has ever experienced. Never in his life has he ever imagined he would be performing in a stadium filled with 40 thousand people, each one of them chanting out their group name. He remembers the worries each of the members expressed before they left for their flight, hoping that there would at least be 10 of their fans cheering for them.

But when their manager excitedly tells them that the majority of the attending crowd were Engenes, Sunoo’s realised that this was exactly where he’s meant to be.

He could still hear the ringing of the cheers as they each walked off backstage, hearing the multiple chants of Enhypen, and the ones calling out for him. This was the kind of thrill Sunoo needed, longed for, even. You couldn’t blame him, really, what with the pandemic limiting their chances of seeing their fans in the flesh. This was something he wished he could tattoo in his mind for eternity, but he supposes the lingering cheers were enough for the time being.

A voice from behind calls out to him, until Sunoo could feel an arm being slung over his shoulder as they walked towards their manager. “Sunoo! Don’t you think that was amazing? I want to do this again.” Sunghoon grinned at him, all gorgeous and handsome and Sunoo prayed that the rapid beating of his heart was a remnant of his prior adrenaline rush. “Me too, hyung. Did you see how many of them sang along to us? That’s so crazy to me.”

“I know right? But you can’t ignore the fact that the cheers were incredibly loud whenever you came on. I’m sure you won people’s hearts over when you started doing aegyo.

And there it was again, the syncopated beating rhythm of his heart (the kind that Sunoo’s sure he should be concerned about). He ignores it though, like he always does.

He ignores it, because this is just how Sunghoon is. He teases and plays around with Sunoo until the other one is giggling so uncontrollably that both Heeseung and Jungwon have to tell them to shut up. He compliments and praises Sunoo like he needed Sunoo to know everything he’s worth, and then looks at Sunoo as if he was the only ever good thing in the universe.

This is just how Sunghoon is.

“Shut up, hyung. You should’ve heard the screaming whenever you were at the centre. I’m pretty sure I heard someone yell out ‘ Park Sunghoon you’re so hot ’.”

“You basically admitted I was hot.”

“I was not !” Flustered, Sunoo shoves Sunghoon’s arm off of him and slaps him on the shoulder, grabbing the white towel that Niki handed to him and begins wiping his face. “Did so. C’mon, of all things people yelled out, that was the first thing you remembered? There has got to be some kind of truth there.” Sunghoon snickers at him, leaning forward so that he was within Sunoo’s personal bubble, but not enough that their noses touched. “You are a menace, and I hope you know that.” Looking to his side as a frail attempt at breaking eye contact with the older, Sunoo simply huffed, crossing his arms.

Jay calls out to them from where he stood in a circle with the other members, “When you two are done flirting, come here and join us. We can’t do this without you two.”

Sunoo really wants Jay to shut up for once.

The car ride to their hotel was unceremoniously quiet, a stark contrast to their usual loud chattering and laughter. It was to be expected though, considering they performed shortly after their touchdown in Germany, and the long flights they just had.

The window next to Sunoo served as his escape for the next couple of minutes, watching the way the buildings and trees passed them in a slight blur. Germany was pretty in the pictures that he saw online, and it was even prettier when he saw it with his own two eyes. It’s a shame they weren’t able to spend a lot of time touring, but Sunoo will cherish whatever amount of time he has.

They finally arrived at their hotel, and Sunoo was glad that the entrance wasn’t too crowded with their fans. Sunoo finds that there’s a presence next to him that wasn’t there, quickly realising it was only Sunghoon. “Manager-nim said he arranged our roommates for tonight. Honestly I just want to sleep.” Sunoo couldn’t have agreed more.

“I heard the hotel rooms are really pretty. We should take some selcas together,” Sunoo mumbles, tapping the tip of his right foot along to the song playing in the lobby. “Well, let’s hope that we’re roommates then.” Sunghoon chuckles, grinning at him again and Sunoo thinks his world is about to stop.

He’s going to die of cardiac arrest and it’s going to be stupidly pretty Park Sunghoon’s fault.

Sunghoon nudges his shoulder playfully and Sunoo reciprocates. They don’t move away from each other though, letting their shoulders bump and touch as they listen to their manager brief them about their night.

“I have placed you all in rooms together, because I know we’d be out here for another hour if I made you all decide amongst yourself.” A series of giggles circulate between them, their tired eyes, crinkling at their manager’s words. He calls out the roommates and then hands them a key card, sending them off on their way so they could have an early night.

“Sunoo and Sunghoon. Here’s your key cards,” he passes the key cards to both of them and pats them on the shoulder. From the corner of his eye, Sunoo takes note of how Sunghoon discretely pumps his fist in the air. Sunoo’s excited too, if he’s going to be completely honest. It’s always nice rooming with Sunghoon, and besides, they could finally take up on that offer Sunoo proposed earlier that day.

Just then, his phone chimes with a message from Jungwon, who went up to his room with Niki a couple of minutes ago.

wonie

HYUNGGGG

make sure you choose the bed by the window!!

it’s soooo pretty omg

u can take so many pretty pictures here

[Picture of the hotel room, two double beds separated by a bedside table. One of them, by the window]

Sunoo types a hasty reply, grabbing onto his luggage when their manager speaks up again. “Oh, just to let you two know, they said this room either has a king-sized bed, or two double beds like the others. They accidentally gave away the other room you two were supposed to get to someone else, so they gave us this as a replacement. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem though.”

Oh no.

Walking straight into the room, Sunghoon plops himself onto the middle of the giant bed in the middle of the room, an arm over his eyes as he groans loudly. Realisation hits Sunoo a little late, only noticing the number of beds in the room once he’s taken his shoes off and parked his luggage next to the older boy’s one.

Oh.

Oh.

By some unforeseen luck, they ended up getting the room with the king-sized bed. This shouldn’t be a problem, heck, Sunoo shouldn’t even be this worried. He was just sharing a bed with his bandmate. His friend. What’s the worst that could happen?

Except things aren’t always as easy as they seem, considering the thought of waking up in the morning with Sunghoon’s face next to him was enough to turn his face crimson.

Sunoo shrugs it off though, because if there’s anything else he’s good at, it's ignoring the blatant crush he has for the older boy. He pads towards the bed, feeling it dip as he sits next to Sunghoon’s sprawled body. Reaching a hand out tentatively, he hesitates slightly, before crumbling his resolve and running his hands through Sunghoon’s silver locks. It’s as soft as he remembers, nostalgic from all the time’s he’s carded his fingers through the boy’s hair when he needed help to style it. He feels Sunghoon relax underneath his touch, maybe even lean towards it himself. Sunghoon slowly opens his eyes, smiling sweetly at Sunoo as he curls even further into Sunoo’s hand.

It’s so domestic and warm. Sunoo doesn’t want this moment to end.

“Go wash up, hyung. I know you hate sleeping without washing up first.” Sunoo’s voice is soft and velvety, and Sunghoon looks at him more fondly than before. It makes the younger boy’s heart race, but there’s that familiarity that comes with Sunghoon’s presence that rids the air of any awkwardness that should be there. “I’ll get up. Wash up after me as well, and then let’s go to sleep.”

Sunghoon does as he says; he stands up, sheds his coat off, grabs some clothes of his luggage and heads towards their shared bathroom. But not before he stands next to Sunoo and hesitates, and then decides to plant a gentle kiss on the top of Sunoo’s head. He rushes to the bathroom immediately though, not leaving Sunoo enough time to even react or process whatever the hell just happened.

After Sunghoon washes up, Sunoo went ahead and washed up after him. They didn’t speak a word to each other, too exhausted and nervous to even think about what happened between them. When Sunoo returned from the bathroom a few minutes later, he found Sunghoon buried into the pillows and blankets of their bed, soft snores escaping his pink lips.

He’s handsome even when he’s sleeping, which Sunoo finds unfair. He snaps a couple pictures of a knocked out Sunghoon and sends it to their group chat, giggling when Niki cracks a few jokes about the pictures. Sunoo settles himself next to Sunghoon, making sure to leave a small gap between them and turns off their light.

It doesn’t take him long before he falls asleep too, shoulders drooping and his eyes heavy.

There’s a gentle hand tracing along Sunoo’s face, and a whisper of a voice singing melodies of lullabies Sunoo hasn’t heard in years. He recognises that hand, though. He knows the feeling of the back of those palms as it rubs against his cheek, and the touch of his fingertips against the moles on his nose.

“So pretty.”

His breath hitches, feeling Sunghoon lightly tug away the stray strands of hair against his bangs. Sunoo tries not to react, or even move. His heart was thumping so wildly on his chest that it took everything in him to not open his eyes right then and there. Not yet, at least. Not until Sunghoon was done talking.

“I really like you, Sunoo.”

Sunoo feels like he wants to scream, but he pushes down the urge and wills his muscles to not move an inch. Sunghoon’s face is closer now, because he can feel a warm breath fan against his nose. He hears Sunghoon intake a sharp breath, his right hand softly cupping Sunoo’s cheek.

“I really, really like you. I like you and your obsession with mint choco. I like you and the way you always manage to make me watch a new K-drama with you. I like you and the way you smile at me.”

There’s a pregnant pause before Sunoo hears Sunghoon speak again, this time quieter than earlier, but there’s a slyness in his voice.

“I really like you, and the way you’re pretending to be asleep right now.”

He’s been busted. But Sunoo wouldn’t be Kim Sunoo if he doesn’t find a way to counterattack the older’s words. Opening his eyes, he’s met with the most adoring pair of eyes staring right at him. Sunoo might just melt if Sunghoon wasn’t holding onto him so tightly. He’s done trying to ignore the feelings he’s been harbouring for the older boy, and this time decides to take matters into his own hands.

“Then kiss me.”

And Sunghoon does. He lifts himself up until he’s hovering over Sunoo, his right hand still cupping his cheek. Sunghoon rubs his thumb against Sunoo’s skin, and it sends electricity through his body – until the other boy leans forward and joins their lips together.

Sunghoon tastes like everything good. He tastes like that fancy chocolate Jay brings home to the dorms, or that coffee-flavoured ice cream Sunghoon seemed to adore so much. He slots his lips so perfectly against Sunoo’s that he doesn’t want this to end. He wants to feel the pressure on his lips and the warm hand pressed against his lips.

Sunghoon kisses him like he’s all he’s ever wanted in his life. It’s gentle and passionate all at the same time, and Sunoo wonders how he’s lived his life without ever feeling this before.

They pull away when their lungs begin to burn, panting slightly. Sunoo curses mother nature for making oxygen so essential to him right then. Their noses are still pressed against each other, and Sunghoon is so unbelievably close that Sunoo’s afraid he won’t ever let go (not that the older would’ve let him anyways).

“I really like you too.”

They giggle as they kiss once more, chastely this time. Sunghoon lays back down on his side with a wide grin on his face when they break apart, opening his arms wide and waiting for Sunoo to crawl into them. “C’mere, lay down next to me. We should go back to sleep, Sunoo-yah,” Sunghoon says, his eyes still fondly gazing at Sunoo as he invites the younger boy to close the gap between their bodies.

Sunoo shifts forward and buries his face into Sunghoon’s neck, the latter’s arms circling his waist as he pulls Sunoo against him. Their bodies are flushed against each other as they let their eyelids get heavy once again.

They fall asleep just like that; the gap between them is nowhere to be seen.

Sunoo wakes up first before Sunghoon, noticing the body pressed up against him and the arm tightly on his waist. He slowly manoeuvres himself out of bed, trying his hardest to not rouse the other awake.

He goes about his morning routine like he always does, but there’s a spring in his step when he remembers what happened between them last night. Sunoo finishes getting ready, and decides to take a few photos of the room, and selcas of himself. Looking at the time on his phone, he walks over to Sunghoon’s side of the bed where the older one was still asleep.

“Hyungie, get up. Get ready and then head off to breakfast.”

Sunghoon groans and pulls Sunoo towards him. “No.” Sunoo rolls his eyes, tapping Sunghoon’s shoulder a bit faster this time. “Get up, or else you’ll miss breakfast.” The other adamantly shakes his head, but he lets his eyes open nonetheless.

“Go on ahead for breakfast, sunshine. I’ll get ready and join you.” Stretching his arms out, Sunghoon grabs Sunoo’s hands and intertwines their fingers. He brings their joined hands to his lips, kissing it gently.

Sunoo grins at him, his eyes sparkling. “Okay,” he says, pecking Sunghoon on the lips and heading out of their shared room.

Sunoo looks through the selcas he took whilst on his way for breakfast, noticing a happy glow on his features. He makes a note to post them at some point, still feeling light headed whenever he remembers the hotel room he shared with Sunghoon.

Germany was everything Sunoo expected it to be, and maybe even more.
