Chapter 1: The Start

Chapter Text

“Excuse me?” Kyle asked, taking a step back from Stan.

“Wendy wants to hang out with you.” His best friend repeated blankly while holding out a folded pink paper. Kyle just blinked, needing more of an explanation. He didn’t dislike Wendy, sure he was jealous of her relationship with Stan but otherwise they both had a lot in common and she was always very nice to him for the most part. Even so Kyle just couldn’t seem to wrap his head around why she would suddenly want to hang out with him. “Dude, just take the paper and give her a call later.” Stan shoved the paper at Kyle, somewhat annoyed. He turned to leave but was stopped by Kyle.

“Hold on! Why does she want to hang out with me?” He asked. “We aren’t exactly friends and you guys just broke up again yesterday.” Stan sighed disappointingly.

“I don’t know.” And with that Stan left toward his 5th period.

Kyle sighed and turned back to his locker. He grabbed his text book and a green binder labeled as ‘Calculus’. Kyles locker reflected himself pretty well. It was clean and organized, he had everything separated for his classes, a different colored binder for each one. It was the perfect for a junior in high school, though also very odd. He stuck the pink paper in his pocket and slammed his locker, heading to his own 5th period class.

Looking down the hall he spotted Kenny, who immediately met his eyes. Kenny still wore an orange parka, though didn’t zip it up or pull the hood over his head anymore and had changed to blue jeans and brown boots. He had gained a lot of admirers from his looks now that people could actually see his face, and people could actually understand him a lot better now. He smiled and waved, Kenny’s response was to send Kyle a heart shape with his hand and a wink for good measure. Kyle just rolled his eyes but smiled at the gesture none the less.

After entering high school the groups changed slightly, Craig and Tweek were still together and still hung out with Clyde and Token. The girls still had their little groups, though Wendy and Bebe weren’t best friends anymore. Bebe became very popular and while Wendy was also popular, she didn’t turn into a mean girl and fell out of that crowd. Some people moved away, which caused different emotions from everyone. Cartman got expelled after a prank he planned went too far, so his mom moved them to a new town to start over. Everyone was pretty happy that day, especially Kyle. Jimmy’s family moved to New York, he was ecstatic about it, but everyone misses him dearly still.

But what mattered most was Kyle, Kenny, and Stan. Kenny was working a lot, since he got emancipated from his parents and was granted full custody of his sister, he spends almost every day after school working. Though this left little time to hang out, the 3 still stayed great friends. Stan joined the football team for freshman and sophomore year but quit the team before junior year started. Most of his time he spends with Kyle or, until just recently, Wendy. They had gotten back together in middle school though continued on and off throughout the years. Kyle on the other hand cared mostly for his grades, spending a lot of time studying, though always dropping the books to hang out with Stan, which he didn’t mind too much.

Kyle walked into his class and took his seat. Quickly he laid down all his supplies, ready for the lesson. Other kids were filing in including none other than Wendy Testaburger. Long flowing black hair, purple dress and beret, white stocking and black mary janes. She really was beautiful and sat a few seats away. Kyle felt like he needed to talk to her, ask her what was up with her new interest in him. As he stood, the bell rang causing Kyle to just down again with a huff. All through class he would find himself stealing glances at her. Toward the end of class he leaned back to look her way. He jolted, a small blush plaguing his cheeks as he met Wendy’s eyes. She smiled and waved at him. He looked at her quizzically but waved back. She quickly made the motion of a phone with her hands, holding it up to her ear and mouthing the words ‘Call Me’ Kyle just stared in shock before leaning forward. After the bell rang, Kyle quickly gathered his stuff and went to catch up to Wendy before she left the room. Luckily she was still packing up.

“Hey.” He said stopping in front of her desk. “Can we talk?”

“Sure!” Wendy smiled finishing grabbing her stuff, she stood and started walking with Kyle to her locker. “So what’s up?” she asked casually spinning the lock on her locker.

“Why did you ask to hang out? And what was that about in class?” He asked, Kyle wasn’t one to beat around the bush, Wendy knew this.

“Well I wanted to get to know you.” Wendy stated simply, meeting Kyle with the same straight forward attitude he was displaying.

Kyle contemplated for only a moment, but his mouth slipped and let out what was only supposed to be a thought. “Is this why you left Stan?” Wendy was surprised by the question but simply shook her head.

“No no… well kind of.” She fidgeted awkwardly with her hands. Kyle started to feel a bit angry but Wendy continued before he got a word in. “It’s not what you think. Look you know I love Stan, but he was always so obsessed with you. Whenever we were together all he would talk about was you. He’d cancel plans with me to spend time with you. He’d always be looking at you or texting you, and the look on his face…I felt so jealous and insecure.”

Kyle’s face grew a little red at the confession he was being given here. “Ok I understand why you broke up with Stan then. He just told me you got jealous and broke up with him because he was being stupid.” Kyle chuckled lightly, Wendy joined in.

“Right, well that’s the short version.” The two were snapped out of their conversation as the bell rang for 6th period. “Shit!” Wendy cursed under her breath quickly grabbing her stuff. Kyle panicked and started running to get to his locker. “Kyle! Text me so I can finish explaining!” Kyle waved but didn’t look back or stop running.

He was able to get his stuff for English class but wasn’t able to make it to class before the bell. Kyle stuck his head in but was surprised not to see the teacher. ‘Thank Christ’ he thought. Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, he quickly took his seat just as the teacher entered the room. The teacher looked awful, dark bags under her eyes, her hair disheveled. She promptly stated they were going to watch a film before dimming the lights and turning the projector on. Sitting at her seat with her head down, the class started chatting and talking, not paying any attention to the film playing in old English.

Kyle took the pink paper out of his pocket and unfolded it. Wendy’s number was written neatly in curvy handwriting. He took out his phone and entered the numbers.

Kyle: Hey

(XXX)XXX-XX56: Kyle?

Kyle: Yeah, Wendy?

(XXX)XXX-XX56: Yep, thanks for texting me! But won’t you get in trouble for texting during class?

Kyle took a moment to actually add Wendy to his contacts, also checking to make sure the teacher wasn’t paying attention. Luckily she was still asleep at her desk, head buried in her arms.

Kyle: Nah, Ms. Harris put on a movie and went to sleep.

Wendy: Sounds like her, lol. 😊

Kyle: Won’t you be getting in trouble for texting?

Wendy: Nope, I’m good. I have independent study this hour.

Kyle: Lucky you. I have independent study next period.

Wendy: I think that’s better, then you can just do all your homework for all the classes!

Kyle chuckle, he agreed. Made it easier for him for sure.

Kyle: So you wanted to explain?

Wendy: Oh yeah, well I thought if I hung out with you and got to know you better, I could start to understand why Stan is so obsessed with you. If I knew, then maybe I wouldn’t be so mad or jealous.

Kyle thought that made a lot of sense surprisingly. He was jealous of her relationship with him too, maybe this could be mutually beneficial.

Kyle: Alright, well when do you wanna hang out? What would we even do? I don’t know what you like.

Wendy: Well I don’t know what we have in common, that’s why we’re hanging out silly. But we can just hang out tomorrow night and study for the calc quiz if you want.

Kyle: That sounds fine. I’ll be there.

The bell rang, signaling the end of class. Kyle hadn’t even realized he’d been talking to Wendy for that long, but grabbed his stuff and exited the class, making his way to his locker.
