Work Text:
They entertain the Nein for a little while.
Once the initial excitement has passed and the new aunts and uncles have been allowed to hold the twins, they sit and talk.
“So you really didn’t know you would be having twins?”
It’s Fjord who finally comes out and asks the question they have all alluded to, he had up until a few minutes ago been holding Hayden but she had apparently had enough of being passed around and had started crying, not stopping until she’s handed to Beau and even then, she still occasionally makes small unpleased sounds.
Beau looks up from her daughter whom she is still trying to comfort, “Do you honestly think that we would have only gotten one of everything if we knew there was going to be two of them Fjord?”
It comes out a lot sharper than she means to, but between the labor, discovering that she was having twins, and just the general insanity of the past twelve hours, she feels like she can be forgiven for it.
“No, you probably wouldn’t.” It’s Caleb who answers.
There’s silence after that, and Beau is so fucking tired she just wants to get some sleep.
“How are you doing Beau?” ask’s Veth “From what we could hear downstairs, it sounded like it was rough.” Beau is surprised by how caring her tone is, not because she doesn’t think Veth can be caring, but more that they just don’t really have that sort of relationship.
“I remember how bad it hurt with Luc,” she sounds downright commiserating now “I would not want to do that twice in one night.” As she says that she shoots a commiserating look at Beau as her eyes flick between her and each of the twins.
Oh right, Beau thinks, Veth is probably the only one present who understands just how much last night sucked. Don’t get her wrong; the end result is absolutely incredible, and she would do it again but even now everything still hurts if she moves the wrong way.
“Yeah you could say it was rough,” Beau knows by the way they all look at her that they can hear the tiredness in her voice “and trust me Veth, whatever you’re imagining, double it. I had spent eight fucking hours in labor, constantly feeling like I was being torn in half, and then when I finally think I’m done? She fucking tells me there’s another one.”
“Perhaps we should let you rest then Beauregard, you have had a very long day and even without that I imagine you and Yasha would like some time alone to enjoy your children without needing to entertain us.”
“I mean if you’re offering then I won’t say no.”
“Say no more, we will come by again soon.”
Beau goes to answer but all that comes out is a large yawn.
As all of them say their goodbyes and make their way downstairs, with promises to be back in a few days Yasha takes Leo from Caduceus and follow them down to let them out.
She moves a little, wincing when a sharp pain shoots through her and looks down at her daughter.
“You know what? Despite feeling like shit for the past few months and really feeling like shit right now,” Beau strokes Hayden’s cheek “you were worth every moment. You and you brother.”
That’s when Yasha comes through the door, Leo safely sleeping in her arms.
“So turns out it’s really great to have friends who can just duplicate items,” she sits down in the large armchair “in other news, thanks to Caleb we won’t need to buy another bassinet, he just magicked one identical to the other one into existence.”
“That’s nice, saves us the hassle of having to go get one today.”
“Yeah.” Yasha’s quiet after that, gaze constantly flitting from the child in her arms to Beau and Hayden on the bed. “Can I ask you something Beau?”
“Sure, so long as it’s nothing bad, otherwise it’ll have to wait until after I get some sleep.”
Yasha laughs a little.
“No it’s nothing bad just… why did you veto naming Hayden after people we know? I like the name a lot but I’m just curious.”
Beau looked down at her daughter who looked to be on the edge of dozing off to sleep, “You and I both know what’s it like to have expectations placed on us, I would never want my child to feel like they had to be a replacement for their namesake or that they needed to live up to them in some way.” She looks up at Yasha who is looking a little worried “What’s up?”
“Is it okay I wanted to name him Leo then? Just, you said you didn’t want to use Lionett for them at all but I really wanted our kid to have something from your name too…” Yasha trails off.
Beau shook her head, “That felt different to me like I’m not dead; they wouldn’t have to live up to me like that. Also, that was why Hayden was my top pick, something completely new, something that they could make their own.” She looks down at the baby in her arms “And now she will do that someday and so will Leo, they’ll get to become their own people.”
Yasha gently gets up from the chair and makes her over to the bed, careful not to jostle Leo in her arms nor Beau and Hayden on the bed as she sits with as much care as Beau has ever seen from her gentle giant of a girlfriend.
Yasha gets close enough that she can rest her head on top of Beau’s and Beau moves her head a little to the side to rest against Yasha’s chest “Yeah, they will.” Beau smiles as she feels Yasha press a kiss to her forehead before watching as she gently does the same to their children “But right now they’re just babies, our babies and I can’t wait to do all those things you do with your child. Like, teach them to walk and talk, read to them and all of that kinda stuff.”
“Yeah,” Beau blinks back the tears that gather at Yasha’s words, damn hormones “Yeah I can’t wait to do all of those things too, be better parents than I ever had.” She looks at her children “They’re only hours old and I would burn down the world for them, they will never wonder if they’re loved. Never.”
Yasha presses another gentle kiss to her lips this time “Never.” She echoes.
They stay like that for a while, just staying in bed as they take in their children and quietly discuss hopes and wishes for the future.
Late summer evenings spent out in the garden on a picnic blanket as the twins run around, vacations in Nicodranas where they could get to see the ocean and play on the beach, probably with Luc. Spending Winterscrest together and doing family things, buying presents and baking treats and spending time together. Taking them for tea at the Grove. Maybe even introducing them to Clara and TJ.
Hundreds of possibilities, thousands of moments to look forward to where they would get to watch their children grow.
And who knew, thought Beau, maybe their family would grow even bigger than it was now, maybe they would get a dog or two or even another baby when the twins were older.
‘Family is an odd thing’ Beau thought to herself, it had seemed closer to a shackle than anything else to Beau while she was growing up watching her parents loveless marriage and her father's barely hidden disdain for herself.
The Nein were the first people Beau would say gave her a positive connection of family, of people who love you and root for you, who will rally around you when needed or stand by your side; not wanting to get in the way but always there to offer their strength.
Now she and Yasha were going to be the ones to show two impressionable souls what a family was supposed to be, they were going to be the ones the twins (hopefully) went to when they had questions, where they sought shelter when the world seemed too cruel.
It would be the complete opposite of what she had grown up with, Beau had decided that the second she knew she would be keeping the pregnancy. But now in the bubble of her and Yasha’s bedroom as the two of them sat and admired their children she promised herself that she would be the best mother she possibly could.
She carefully smoothed her finger along her daughter’s cheek as she and Yasha sat and watched as the sun rose on their first day as mothers.
