Work Text:

“And you’re sure you want to do this?” Kyouka asks one last time, staring at her girlfriend’s face in the mirror. It’s currently 3 am on a Saturday, and the two have been sitting in Momo’s dorm bathroom — that somehow looks bigger and a hundred times more lavish than Kyouka’s, even though they have the same dimensions — for the past hour and a half. With only two months left until graduation, the whole class has been on edge. Their third, and last year at UA has been seemingly peaceful, and it feels like everyone is just anticipating for something catastrophic to happen. With Shigaraki and the League having been defeated just a year ago, people are expecting for them to rise back from the ashes again like a weird, terrifying phoenix. It’s not that they’re hoping for a new world-level threat to arise, it’s just that Class 3A has only known destruction and mortal peril since their admissions into the school. It’s weird that there are no crazy villains trying to break into their dorms, or that they can actually do normal highschool activities (like go on field trips without getting swept up in a war).

For some students like Momo Yaoyorozu, it seems like the constant fear of Japan, and their lives, being turned upside down again, isn’t the only thing stressing them out. Sometimes, Kyouka forgets how Momo got into the hero course with recommendations in the first place. On top of being filthy rich, her family also runs one of the biggest hero agencies in the world, with branches all over Japan and overseas. After her parents had practically disowned — Kyouka says practically, because they’re still annoying as shit and continue to watch their daughter’s every move — Momo after a dispute last summer, the girl said herself that she was done with her family. But time after time, the Yaoyorozu family had displayed their persistence when it came to controlling their only daughter. This time wasn’t any different.

It wasn’t new for newly graduated heroes from UA to sign contracts with agencies overseas. Shit, at least a quarter of their graduating class had already committed to agencies across Asia, some even venturing to the west and finding spots in top American agencies. Momo had never expressed interest in leaving Japan to pursue heroics, at least not after she had solidified her role as a respected hero in her home country first, so when Momo suddenly blurted that she was going to go to America after their graduation, Kyouka knew something was up.

And Kyouka was right. She was always right with these kinds of things, for some reason. Her parents were basically forcing Momo to sign an exclusive contract with their family’s agency, and apparently she was going to be stationed in America for a few years. With her family, you always had to repay the smallest of favours they gave you. For Momo, she was expected to go to a foreign country as a thanks for getting recommended into the hero course. It was all stupid in Kyouka’s mind, but she knew that meddling in family drama would just make everything ten times worse; Momo’s parents didn’t exactly like Kyouka.

She had just pushed her girlfriend into the right direction. That’s how they ended up in the bathroom. Momo warily eyes the scissors and box hair dye that sit on the bathroom counter. She was planning on telling her parents that, no, she wasn’t going to go to America and that she didn’t owe her parents shit just because they got her recommended into the hero course three years ago. Kyouka just thought a new haircut would be the extra punch in the gut for them.

Momo always had beautiful hair. It was one of her distinguishing features, especially if it was in that signature high ponytail that the public had grown to look for in times of need. But Momo wanted it gone. It had been a signature of the female heroes in her family, and she just … couldn’t bear to be reminded of her family everywhere she looked. Her whole existence reminded her of her family, and that was enough.

She had cut it a few times since the war last year, but never short enough to reveal the nasty scar that snaked up her neck. Momo wasn’t afraid of hiding anymore; not the scar from the public, and not herself from her parents.

Kyouka asks again, “You sure you want to do this, Mo?”

Momo looks at her reflection in the mirror. “I’m sure.”

Black tufts of hair fall onto the bathroom floor, and Momo sits up a little straighter. The two girls spend a few more hours in the bathroom, Kyouka stopping every ten minutes to press a gentle kiss against Momo’s forehead.

“You know I love you, right? No matter what you end up doing after graduation.”

Momo smiles. But this smile is a little different from the normal ones that Momo flashes every so often in school. Kyouka remembers this smile from the war, after the dust had settled and Japan had emerged victorious. A smile that signified new beginnings, a new dawn.
