Chapter 1: Magic

Chapter Text

“Pour me another one please.” Luz said as she approached the bar

After getting her refill she turned around to fully take in everything she saw. Loud music was playing as people were dancing, drinking and talking all around her. And on the other side of the room she saw the word “MAGIC” spelled in big light up letters.

When people look at her they see her as “Luzifer Clawthorne”, the nightclub owner. But what they don’t know is that she is secretly the Devil herself. For thousands of years it was Luz’s job to torture those who find themselves in Hell. It was the role that her mother, the goddess of all creation, forced her into when she turned rebellious.

Five years ago she got tired of being the lady of Hell and decided to go to LA to retire with King, her pet titan. But normal people believe he’s just a little black dog. Months later she became the owner of the club in this building and lived in the penthouse ever since.

She had everything she wanted at her fingertips. Every night was a party and she had enough booze to make even a celestial being feel intoxicated. And at times, if she’s in the mood, she would take a man or woman or some times both, upstairs for some… PRIVATE TIME.

She looked down at her glass of brown liquid and before she could take a sip she sensed something was off. She looked back up and saw that everyone around was suddenly moving a thousand times slower.

She huffed in annoyance before setting the glass down and turning her head towards the door to see a man with wings on his back.

In his hand was a staff with a red cardinal on the end of it.

“Hunter… how’s it hanging, big brother.” Luz said with fake enthusiasm

“Luz, mother has requested you return to the underworld.” The man, Hunter, stated

“Hunter I told you, I’m tired of playing the role that mom gave me. I came here to get away from it all.”

As Luz took a seat she noticed that Hunter was becoming more irritated

“You are an insult to everything that’s Divine!” Hunter practically shouted

“Aww… thanks.” Luz said, placing her hand over her heart. “But lately I’ve been thinking. Am I the devil because I was born evil or because our mom decided I was?”

“Do you have any idea what happens when the devil leaves Hell?”

“No and I don’t care.”

Suddenly Hunter stepped forward and pulled Luz from where she was sitting

“She will not be merciful for much longer.” He said before walking out of the club

As time returned to normal Luz could continue to enjoy the party.

Later that night Luz saw another familiar face. Coming towards her was a woman with blonde hair dressed all fancy.

“Delilah, It’s been a minute!” Luz said before hugging her

“I know!” Delilah said, returning the hug

Delilah used to be a singer at the nightclub but left and started a professional singing career.

The two of them spent the next few minutes catching up. Luz learned about how Delilah’s career didn’t work out and is now an addict. She also told her how her ex fiancée is getting married to someone else.

“I feel like I sold my soul to the devil when I started this.” Delilah admitted

Luz chuckled at that statement

“That would imply the devil was interested in your soul.” Luz told her “Can you promise me something Delilah?”

“Promise you what?” She wondered

“Please take care of yourself.” Luz stated

They stared at each other as Luz waited for an answer

“I will.” Delilah had a smile grow on her face

The two of them stepped outside. They gave each other a hug goodbye and before anything else could happen a car speeded by, fired a gun at them and they both fell to the ground.

Luz was able to get up but as she did she realized that Delilah was dead. She then noticed that the person who shot her got hit by a truck and was only a few feet away. She approached the car and the saw the shooter laying limp in his seat

“Oh no no no, not yet.” She said before grabbing his chest to wake him up “Why did you end her life?”

“For money.” He said, clearly in pain

“If I were still in Hell I would have plenty of stuff planned out for you.” The devil woman said angrily

“Hey lady, I just pulled the trigger.”

He died in that moment

A car parked in front of the crime scene and Detective Amity Blight stepped out of it. She looked around and noticed they were in front of a nightclub called “Magic”. She saw the other cops checking for evidence before she went up to the car to get a closer look.

“Seems like a simple case to me.” Said a familiar voice

Amity turned around to see her ex-wife and fellow detective, Boscha Potion.

“We found drugs in the woman’s purse and this guy was a known drug dealer.” Boscha stated “She probably just owed him money.”

“This is my case Boscha, I’ll decide if it’s simple or not.” Amity said

“Lieutenant Wittebane would want this case solved quickly.” Boscha said

Amity knew she was right, but for some reason thought there was more to this case.

She looked at the body behind the wheel. His skin looked pale, his hair was black and he looked like he’d be taller than her. He wore a gray hoodie and black shirt, that was now covered in blood.

He also had a gold watch on his left wrist that looked misplaced with the rest he had on. It also had blood on it.

‘Probably stolen.’ She concluded

“Are there any witnesses to what happened?”

Moments later and Amity was standing by a piano being played by the nightclubs owner

“Luzifer Clawthorne.”

“Luzifer? Is that a stage name?”

Amity recognized that as another name for the devil

The woman turned to face Amity, a cocky smile on her face

“God given, unfortunately. I mostly just go by Luz.”

With them now face to face Amity got a good look at the witness. She looked around her age, she had short dark brown hair, light brown eyes and she had a fancy looking black suit on. She also had a slit eyebrow over her left eye.

“Can you tell me how you knew the victim, Luz?” The detective asked

“She used to work here. She stopped over for a visit and after a few minutes we stepped outside and then someone shot at before he crashed.” Luz explained “Then right before he died he told me did it for money.”

That story got Amity interested

“Weird how she got multiple bullet shots but you don’t have a scratch on you.” Amity said with suspicion

Luz let out a chuckle, reaching for her drink

“One of the benefits of immortality.”

“Immortality…? Right….” Amity said sarcastically while writing everything down

“Oh and he told me he JUST pulled the trigger. Which is… interesting.”

That is interesting, Amity thought

“Ok, I think we’re done here.”

Before Amity could walk away, the well dressed woman got up and grabbed her arm

“Detective, wait.” The witness said, “I want to help on this investigation.”

“Why?” She asked, getting annoyed

“Because there is a person out there who needs to be punished and it’s my job to make sure that happens.” Luz answered

Amity could see determination in the woman’s eyes but it wasn’t enough

“I don’t need your help.” The detective stated before leaving the building
