Kel woke up on a nice sunny day right next to his husband, his soulmate, his whole world. Sunny was still asleep with his arms wrapped around Kel, snoring lightly while his body lay comfortably under the covers. Sunny Felt the warmth emanating from Kel's body heat along with his hairy arms, a feeling he loved about his husband.
Kel was happy, content with what he has, with what he had obtained. He married his husband after ten years of crushing and romance, many dates until one took the step up and purposed to the other. They got married soon after, found and bought their first house, and, eventually, they adopted their first child. Her name was Penelope. It was a good name, both thought, cute even. She found herself quickly fitting in with her two fathers as they showed her love and care.
They were in their late twenties and their daughter at nine years old, life was good.
Kel put a kiss on Sunny's forehead, "Morning sunshine."
Sunny stirred and opened his eyes to meet Kel's, "Morning honey."
Sunny let out a big yawn, Kel following suit. Kel leaned down again, kissing Sunny on the lips. His beard touched the skin around Sunny's lips, his mustache meeting Kel's. The beard made Sunny feel ticklish, just how he liked it whenever the two kissed like that.
Kel sought to model his beard after his father, round and covering around his chin and lips. It was still a short stubble, although Kel didn't seem to mind and neither did Sunny. Sunny was in fact fond of Kel's hairyness and found it to make him even more attractive. The same could be said about Kel, who saw Sunny having a mustache quite cute and brought out the beauty of his face having hair. Even if Sunny didn't have as much hair as Kel, all that mattered to him was that he was by his side. The love that bonded them together would hold strong.
"Today's the day."
Kel said aloud, standing up and stretching his arms and legs, hair visible on each limb. They prepared themselves inside the bathroom for the big day with their daughter. They showered and changed to a more appropriate attire for the picnic. While they were changing, they heard their daughter wake up with a loud yawn.
Sunny was already dressed, a casual black shirt and shorts with his black eyepatch covering his right eye. Their daughter was curious about his eye when they first adopted her, even a bit frightened by it. Sunny simply told her that, "It was Just an accident with a friend from a long time ago."
"I'll go surprise her." Sunny let Kel know as he walked towards their daughter's bedroom. He saw her lay in her bed, rubbing her eyes awake, letting out another yawn. Her brown hair was messy from last night's sleep, it was going to need a good combing. When she fully opened her eyes, she saw her father stand in her doorway, both smiled.
"Today's the day sweetie." Sunny said cheerfully, going by her bedside and rubbing her forehead, planting a family kiss on her cheek. Sunny's mustache tickled Penelope's cheek, causing her to giggle.
"Morning daddy." Penelope greeted her father with a cheery voice.
"Are you ready for the big day sweetie?"
Penelope sat up and stretched her arms out, nodding her rapidly in excitement. Kel appeared behind Sunny in the doorway, dressed in a classic basketball sports jersey, reminiscent of his old clothes that Sunny remembered that he used to wear.
Kel came over and sat down on the bed next to their daughter, happily smiling with fervour for their big day. "I see someone is excited!"
"When do we go?" Penelope asked.
"Before one, so make sure you dress and brush your teeth." Kel gave her a thumbs up, "And uhh, maybe brush your hair too." Sunny stood up and went to the living room, "Don't forget about breakfast you two." Sunny had planned a small breakfast of pancakes and eggs before they left for their trip. He didn't want them to be completely full though, since they were bringing lunch for their picnic.
Kel and Penelope quickly got up; Penelope headed to the bathroom while Kel went to meet up with his husband. Sunny was already preparing the stove, the eggs and pancake batter on the counter. Kel came up behind him and kissed his cheek, "Let's make this day the best for her." Kel Whispered into Sunny's ear. "We will, don't worry." Sunny assured him.
They promised their daughter that they would go on a picnic this day, to go see Aunt Mari. It was mostly Sunny's idea, he wanted Penelope to experience what he used to do with his friends and sister when he was younger. Penelope was pretty hyped about it and Kel found it a good idea as well. It had been a while since they visited her.
Penelope came out of the bathroom, telling her fathers that she brushed her teeth. She even showed off her teeth to prove she had done so. Kel chuckled and patted her head, "Good girl. Now, breakfast will be done in a little bit. After we finish eating up, we'll go see Aunt Mari. C'mon, let's go watch cartoons and let daddy finish cooking."
Kel sat down with Penelope and turned on the T.V. to a colourful show. Kel would have probably cooked for them instead, but found it better that he left it to the expert. Sunny was always the better cook out of the two of them. Not as good as Hero, but he had taken some notes. Kel wondered how they did it with the cooking and all that, maybe he could teach a lesson to him and Penelope one day. He would probably need a hair net as well.
"Breakfast is ready."
The two heard Sunny yell from the kitchen. They quickly got up and rushed into the dining room as the two of them got into their own chair. Penelope took her seat at the table as Kel helped Sunny set up the dishes. They all enjoyed their morning meal, Kel especially as he was digging into his. Penelope was surprised by how fast Kel ate, she envied him in fact. Some eggs and maple syrup was caught in his beard, causing Sunny to use a napkin to clean it up. Sunny told his husband to slow down, lest he influence their daughter the wrong way.
Breakfast was eventually finished and the dishes were put away. The supplies needed for the picnic sat near the front door, all ready for transportation and the food already prepared.
Penelope dressed appropriately with blue denim overalls and a dark purple shirt underneath, black shoes and white socks to go with. Her hair was tied into a small bun with the help of her father Kel.
"We have everything?" Kel wanted to double check to see if they were missing anything. Sunny checked the basket and looked over Penelope, everything was in place. He scratched his mustache and gave a thumbs.
"Alright, here we go!"
Sunny took Penelope by her hand and walked out the front door with Kel. Kel locked the front door and caught up with Sunny and Penelope who were already at the car. Sunny buckled Penelope into her seat, giving her a small juice carton from the basket for the trip. He put the rest of the supplies in the trunk.
Kel took the driver seat and put the keys into the ignition. Sunny sat beside him in the passenger seat and buckled in, Kel following shortly. They pulled out from the driveway and made their way down the street to their destination. It would be a short drive, but that didn't stop Kel from putting on the radio. Penelope would occasionally sip from the carton's straw, bouncing up and down in her seat from the excitement.
They finally reached their destination and Kel parked the car. Kel went into the back and got all the picnic necessities while Sunny unbuckled Penelope from her seat.
Sunny helped Penelope land her feet onto the asphalt and took her hand again. Kel carried the picnic basket with one hand and the blanket under his other arm. It was a short walk before they entered the cemetery. There, they set up in front of one tombstone.
"Say hi to Mari Penelope." Sunny told his daughter.
Penelope took a step up to the tombstone and kneeled down. Sunny and Kel kneeled with her, each holding a flower they brought with them in the basket.
"Hi Mari." Penelope placed her flower onto the ground, Kel placing his next, and Sunny last.
Sunny wrapped an arm around Penelope's shoulder and hugged her close. Sunny had his eyes closed, the three sat in silence as Kel and Sunny thought about their times with Mari. Sunny nearly teared up, a sniffle came from his nose.
"Are you okay dad?" Penelope worried about her father.
"Daddy's fine Penelope, just thinking." Sunny opened his eyes and rubbed her hair.
Kel noticed the gloom mood Sunny was letting off, he wanted to turn that around. "I think we should start digging in, what do you say Penelope?" Kel offered.
"Okay, but can Mari join too?" She looked up to both her fathers.
Kel looked at his husband, wishing to just have a good time with their daughter. Sunny exhaled and relaxed, "Sure Penelope, she would love to."
Kel and Sunny sat back at the blanket, eating the stored food they had prepared. Sandwiches and some cookies were made alongside some water and fruit juice. Sunny sat next to his husband, leaning into his shoulder as he ate a sandwich.
Penelope sat across from them, watching a flying butterfly as she ate a cookie and sipped from another juice carton.
Kel looked down at his sunshine, watching him eat his sandwich in peace. He noticed some crumbs and mustard on Sunny's mustache. Kel raised a napkin to his lips and wiped them off, Sunny giggling and thanking Kel.
Sunny looked up at Kel, his eye meeting his. "Kel?"
"Yes sunshine?"
Sunny leaned in closer to his love, "Do you remember mewo?"
Kel swallowed another bite of a sandwich, "Yeah, why?"
"I was thinking, maybe we can get a cat. Another addition to the family, Penelope would love it, don't you think?"
Kel wrapped a hairy arm around Sunny, "Maybe, one of these days. We already have our hands full with Penelope, Mewo II will have to wait."
Sunny laughed, "You already have a name for it? Mewo II?"
Kel shrugged, "Well, not really. Do you have a better one?"
Sunny shook his head, "No, it's fine. Mewo II would be fine."
He raised his head to meet his lips with Kel's, a chaste kiss, nothing too far in front of their daughter. Kel scratched his beard and laughed, hugging Sunny close to his chest. Penelope watched her fathers hug, smiling for their happiness.
The butterfly from earlier landed on her finger. She was taken aback in amazement and whispered for her fathers to look. The bug fluttered its wings, the colours bright and beautiful for such a small and elegant creature. Sunny and Kel watched it rest on their daughter's finger before it shortly took off.
"That was cool!" Yelled Penelope.
Kel brushed some crumbs from Penelope's overalls, "It was beautiful."
Sunny watched the butterfly fly off into the distance, its colourful wings flapping it away to wherever it may take it. He took Kel's hand and squeezed it tight, thankful for the new life with his new family that loved him.
A couple of hours had past and Kel said it was about time they head home. They packed up the blanket and basket, throwing away any trash into the basket.
Sunny turned to Penelope, "Make sure you say goodbye to Mari."
Penelope faced Mari's grave and waved her hand, "Bye Mari."
She took both of her fathers' hands and walked back to the car.
Their footsteps faded away, the sounds of the cemetery being the singing of birds and the occasional wind. The tombstone stood still, the name of Mari etched into the stone.
OUR DEAREST MARI ;
THE SUN SHINED BRIGHTER WHEN SHE WAS HERE.
