Work Text:

The TV was on, two men sitting on the couch with Nothing else to do but rot their brain with whatever was on. Tired and bored, neither of them really wanted to do anything except watch TV, lacking motivation and, most of all, energy. Work had burnt them out with long shifts, so when they came back to the apartment, immediately the men crashed onto the sofa. The one good thing the two had going for them was that they had each other. Living together was better than living miles apart, that much was certain.

One of them, a tall man with tan skin, flowing brown hair, and a lean body who played basketball during his off time, sat back with one of his arms hanging over his boyfriend, the other holding the remote. The other man, shorter and skinnier with black hair and pale skin who occasionally played the violin, laid on top of the taller man's chest with said man having an arm going around his shoulder and resting on top of him. Both faced the television, nothing particularly gaining their interest as the taller man flipped through various channels.

The taller man, Kel, looked down at the shorter male who was cuddling at his side. Sunny, bored as Kel was at the moment, laid on top of his boyfriend with his head on Kel's chest. Sunny was more tired than Kel, barely able to stay awake thanks to Kel's rising and falling chest soothing him. With Sunny's ear up against his breast, he could hear Kel's heart silently beating, further lulling him to sleep. The only thing keeping him awake was the sounds of the TV flickering everytime Kel switched to another channel. While annoying, Sunny wanted to stay with Kel and be his company, refusing to sleep alone in bed without him unless Kel joined him to keep snuggling.

Eventually Sunny was able to fall asleep as Kel continued to look for something to watch, or at least have something in the background as he slept as well. So far, he found nothing.

Just as he was thinking about turning the TV off and getting something to snack on, he put on the news just to see what was happening in the world. A well dressed woman sitting in front of a camera appeared, holding some pieces of paper in her hands. She begins with a normal greeting in a calm and formal tone.

"Welcome back, we are coming to you live with some breaking and perhaps some exciting news for some of you watching this right now."

Kel felt Sunny stir awake as he shifted in place and made a curious "huh".

"Today the Supreme Court, after multiple lawsuits, has ruled in favour of fully legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the country on a federal level. Along with-"

At first Kel couldn't believe what he had heard, going completely silent as the woman on screen continued with her report, eyes wide open and mouth almost slack jawed.

"Wha-What did she say?" Sunny asked, voice drowsy from his short nap. When his boyfriend didn't immediately respond, he called his name, "Kel?"

Sunny began to worry if the news had literally paralyzed Kel with something horrible, it almost gave Sunny a heart attack until Kel grabbed him and lifted him up into the air with a holler of utmost joy.

"Yahoo! We can get married Sunny! Can you believe it?"

Sunny was completely lost on why Kel was so happy, "What? What do you mean, why are you so excited?"

Kel put his boyfriend back on the ground and placed his hands on Sunny's shoulders.

"Didn't you hear the news lady? They legalized gay marriage everywhere!"

It took a moment before it hit Sunny like a freight train.

"Wait, are you saying- does that mean we can... get married now? Without getting in trouble?"

Kel's response was to abruptly kiss Sunny on the lips, catching him off guard as Kel pulled him into it.

"Hell yeah Sunny, of course! Man, I'm so happy I just want kiss you until I pass out."

Sunny grabbed Kel by his jersey and pulled him into another kiss, a far longer one. It was Sunny's turn to feel the enlightening spark of joy Kel radiated, barely containing himself as he wanted to take Kel to the bedroom and celebrate to the fullest.

"My god, Kel, this is amazing I... please don't let this be a dream."

A sudden jolt of pain shot through Sunny's left cheek as Kel pinched him, letting out a loud yelp.

"Feel awake?" Kel chuckled.

Out of petty and playful revenge, Sunny pinched back on Kel's own cheek, arms set out in front to defend himself, "Ow! Hey!"

"I'm awake Kel, I'm awake."

Sunny composed himself as he went through the facts in his head. "We can get married now, we can actually get married now." Sunny said in disbelief.

"This is awesome right?"

"Yeah..."

The two stopped talking and began to stare each other as an important question came to mind. Immediately, it seemed as though the upbeat high of the room had died down as they went completely silent.

Kel was the first to ask, "Do you... actually want to get married?"

Sunny didn't understand the question at first, "Huh?"

"I mean, I know we're excited and all about this news, but-"

"What are you talking about Kel?" Sunny interrupted.

"Well, I... I don't know, I thought maybe you might not be ready for marriage or something, that things were moving too fast and that you might not want us to get married right away."

"Kel... you're as dumb as a box of hammers." Sunny's hands gripped both sides of Kel's face as he brought them mere inches away from one another. "We're in our thirties now Kel, we've been together for years. Why wouldn't I want us to get married right away? "

Sunny unhanded him as Kel took a step back in shock.

"So... does that mean that you would say yes?"

"What?"

"To-" Kel stopped himself as a brilliant idea entered his head.

"Hold on." Kel got down on one knee, the shorter male puzzled by what his boyfriend was doing. It was not until he observed carefully the position Kel was in that he realised what he was really doing.

"Babe, I've been wanting to ask you this for a long time," Kel held Sunny's hand, bringing it between them as he locked onto Sunny's eyes as he smiled fondly, "Mi amor, my brightest star, will you marry me?"

Sunny nearly burst into laughter as he pulled himself into Kel's embrace.

"Yes, Yes! A million times yes! Of course I will marry you."

Kel once again lifted Sunny into the air as he pecked Sunny's face with hundreds of kisses.

"I love you Sunny, I love you so much."

"I love you too." Sunny said as he was bombarded with smooches, feigning his attempts to escape Kel's clutch.

After tiring of covering Sunny with his lips, he put him back down on the ground, Sunny still clinging to him in an affectionate hug. Kel wondered if Sunny knew that he didn't have any rings for the proposal, this was a last second thing after all. Maybe it wouldn't matter, perhaps their words were enough.

"Kel?"

"Yeah sun-fun?"

Sunny was bamboozled by Kel's new pet name, he nearly forgot what he wanted to ask.

"Sun-fun?"

Kel shrugged, "Well, you know, like 'fun in the sun'. I thought it was endearing."

He didn't get it at first, but it grew on him.

"... Does this still work as an engagement even without the rings?"

Kel truly did not know, but he also didn't care. "I think so."

Sunny was satisfied with the answer, not like they could afford any in the first place. Both were happy with or without the fancy glamour of jewellery to mark their official plans for marriage. Otherwise, this would do.

With proposals out of the way, now they had to figure out how they were going make arrangements for their wedding. Stuff wasn't cheap, but Sunny was pretty sure his sister and Kel's brother would help them with their financial issues, plus some other things they were probably unaware of. Those two were already married, so they definitely had the experience to be able to lend them a hand with the ins and outs of a wedding ceremony. The more Sunny thought about all of this, the more excited he became, as though he wasn't already excited enough

Just as Sunny was about to talk to Kel about planning for their wedding, Kel suddenly grabbed both his hands.

"Hey, I just remembered something! When my father would get all happy, on the occasion he would start singing this song and dance with our mom. It's a romantic folk song, I think you'll like it."

Caught off guard, Sunny wasn't sure if he wanted to do what Kel wanted them to do. It was heartwarming, but he wasn't particularly good at it, he would step all over Kel's feet if he did.

"Wanna dance, mi brillante estrella?" Kel said as though he was inviting him to take his hand at a highschool prom night, smiling as he did.

As cheesy as it was, Sunny couldn't help but accept and smile right back at him.

"Gladly."

The action itself moved Sunny more than he ever thought it could, even if Kel's singing was pretty terrible, it would still make Sunny love him more.

Kel started slow, moving at a pace so Sunny could keep up with him.

"De la Serria Morena, cielito lindo, vienen bajando..."

Kel's singing voice was... soothing, far better than what he was expecting. Far from an opra singer with a golden tongue, it was still enjoyable to listen to even though he didn't understand a word of it.

"Ese lunar que tienes, no se los des a nadia, cielito lindo, que a mí me toca..."

The dancing had further slowed down, seemingly the song Kel was singing was coming to an end. At this point, Sunny was pressed up against Kel's chest, head resting beneath the man's chin as he continued drinking in the lyrics his fiancé produced.

"Una flecha en el aire, cielito lindo, lanzó Cupido. Si la tiró jugando, cielito lindo, a mí me herido."

Kel went silent, arms around Sunny with one arm behind his back and the other at rest on the back of his head.

The song was beautiful, regardless of Kel's singing voice, Sunny loved it. He only wished music could accompany it, just to fill in the empty gaps left in between words and enhance the wonder of it all. It would have been the perfect serenade if Sunny still lived at his mother's house, sitting by his open bedroom window, listening in as Kel sung to him a romantic ballad, as cheesy as it sounded. Also, preferably, in a language he could understand.

After a long pause, Kel spoke to him.

"How was that?"

Sunny gazed up towards his beloved, "You were wonderful Kel."

There was shorter pause after Sunny gave his answer, standing in the middle of the living room with TV turned off. Peace, both could bask in it for hours as they held each other for the rest of the day.

However, they had other priorities.

"So... did you want to ask me something? It looked like you wanted to say something before I went on singing. Sorry about that."

Sunny remembered exactly what he wanted to ask, too important to forget even after their little celebratory sing and dance he loved so much.

"... How are we going to plan for our wedding?"

Kel had quickly came to the same realisations his fiancé had about preparing for their wedding, reality slapping him across the face as soon as he thought about it.

"Oh, right... the wedding." Kel gave it some more thought and came up with a possible solution, "I think our friends could help us out. Hero and Mari would be happy to give us a hand, I'm sure they wouldn't mind. Besides, they know more about this wedding stuff than we do."

Sunny hummed in agreement, "My thoughts exactly."

Time ticked by, eventually the two let go of each other, standing only a couple feet apart. Kel let out a small sigh and scratched the side of his head, thinking of what to do next.

"So what now?" Kel asked.

There was something else Sunny remembered quite clearly, on his mind ever since he heard gratifying news from Kel. They had already celebrated Kel's way, now it was Sunny's turn.

The paler man placed a hand on Kel's shoulder before slowly sliding it down to the middle of his chest, fingers playing with his jersey. "Well, I was thinking that maybe we could go into the bedroom together and... you know, have some more fun."

A sharp red blush covered Kel's face, smiling as his eyes fawned over his fiancé's shorter and skinnier figure. His hand reached over and cupped Sunny's cheek, who he instinctively leaned into.

"Sunny, you mean the world to me. I would love to."

Notes:

The song that Kel sings is "Cielito Lindo". The title of the fic is also based on it. I decided to have it in the fic because I figured it would be nice to have Kel sing it to Sunny as a romantic thing. The song itself is a pretty old Mexican folk song. Not sure why that song in particular, I had it in mind for a while and thought it might work in this fic. Let me know if you like its (partial) inclusion and Kel singing it.

Also, if you couldn't tell, this is also based on the event when same-sex marriage became federally legal in the United States. I'm not sure if there was a broadcast of the change in the news or anything at all, so this may not be entirely accurate. I hope it still worked, I thought a suntan fic revolving around it where they celebrate would be cute.
