Chapter Text
Kaz
It was the last day of the university, they had completed their degrees, but they would only get the certificates once they went through summer camp because Jesper had slipped while they were leaving the university after their little heist to get Nina's makeup bag.
But it wasn't only Jesper's fault, Wylan had almost said hi to a security guard because he knew him from his childhood and Matthias wasn't even there the whole heist, they were about to leave him, but Nina insisted they wait. Nina was supposed to be on look out, but she went to the cafeteria to get waffles. Waffles were very expensive from their cafeteria, Nina just stole some in the middle.
But now it was the last day, or the first day of torture. It was prom day, part of their punishment was to also sell the drinks at prom so that's where he was. Matthias was also there, everyone else was gone to dance and try some arcade games. Matthias was only looking at Nina, a student came up to their stall.
"Can I have some grape juice?" He asked, Kaz glanced at the price, it was a fifteen kruge.
"That'll be-"
"Twenty five kruge." Matthias said, Kaz was surprised Matthias was the one doing it, after their 'heist' everyone had tried to be more 'evil'.
"Right." The student handed Matthias fifteen kruge and took a grape juice box. "How would you like it that I tell the principal what you just tried to do?"
"Matthias thought you meant apple juice." Kaz said quickly, Matthias stared at him and nodded, the student shrugged and left.
"Demjin." Matthias whispered, the prom was almost over when everyone returned to the stall.
"Woah, Nina, you have got some moves." Jesper said, Matthias looked away.
"Oh, thank you!" Nina giggled, Matthias blushed, make a move. Matthias shrugged.
They took care of the stall for awhile, before the prom ended. From tomorrow, they were staying at a summer camp for six months, they were going to watch some little kids. They were going to have to be the chaperones, they 'volunteered' to take care of the kids. The camp was a few hours drive from their apartments, so they had to wake up very early morning.
Kaz made himself some black coffee, once he had chugged it down, he changed into a suit, always be presentable, he waited in the car for everyone else to arrive. He was the only one with the car, at least they wouldn't have to cram for the whole four hours, he had a seven seater, let's just say, someone owed Kaz a favour.
Wylan and Inej were the first to come out, as always, they were on time. They loaded their luggage in the car, that's when Kaz realized he didn't pack anything. They both looked at Kaz, he went back inside his apartment, he packed everything, he loaded that into the car and took the driver's seat again. Hopefully, they thought he just forgot to bring the luggage outside and not the fact he forgot to pack.
Inej was sitting in the seat next to him.
"So, did you not pack?" Inej asked, there went his plan.
"Yes." Kaz said quietly, his plan was already ruined, Wylan sat in the seat behind his. Good thing it was not Jesper, he banged his seat continuously through out the whole ride, when he was bored. Inej laughed, Wylan also laughed.
"Cute." She murmured, Wylan stared at Kaz, he looked away quickly. She probably just meant the act of forgetting to pack for six months, right? Right. The door opened, Nina and Matthias sat in the back.
"Sorry, I was on my morning run." Matthias said, after catching his breath.
"Did you pack?" Nina asked, Matthias nodded.
"I knew I'd probably forget, so I did it last night." Matthias said, Nina nodded.
"Oh and Brekker, the trunk is full with my suitcases." Nina smiled, great, how would they fit Jesper's fifty bags?
"Oh come on!" Jesper said from outside, he closed the trunk. He tapped Kaz's window, he brought it down. "Good luck dealing with that, man." Jesper pointed to three suitcases.
They managed to fit his bags in the back somewhere and they started the road trip. The camp was in Lij, which made it even worse. Kaz was going to have to deal with some ten year olds.
"So, are you all excited?" Inej asked, there was a groan from the back and then a sigh, which was clearly from Matthias.
"Yes!" Wylan shouted.
"At least someone is happy. I think this is a lesson that we shouldn't break rules." Inej said, there was another groan.
"No way, so when are we doing the next heist?" Jesper said, "Ooh, Nina left her shoe in the university."
"Oh, we have to go back." Matthias said, everyone looked at him.
"It was a joke, man." Jesper said, Matthias laughed nervously.
"Yes, I was just playing along, duh." Matthias said after a pause, it would have been more convincing if he didn't pause.
"The next time is when Jesper learns to keep his footing." Kaz said, Jesper groaned, this was the third time.
"No, the next time is never." Inej shook her head, Jesper groaned again, now everyone stared at him.
"Sorry, but come on, don't be such a kill joy." Jesper groaned, Wylan nudged him. "Okay, that was the last time."
They listened to music and did some karaoke, after that they all agreed to never let Nina sing. In the third hour, everyone was bored and exhausted, Kaz's leg was killing him, his leg was a kid on its own. In the fourth hour, Kaz knew he couldn't drive anymore. They parked on the side of the road.
"Can you drive?" Kaz asked Inej, she shook her head.
"I don't like to drive." She said, he honestly didn't care, he would have called Jesper, but they all knew how he drove. Eventually, Matthias volunteered, Kaz had to go to the back.
"Why are you all so annoying?" Kaz sat down in the back and put on his seatbelt.
"We haven't even done anything." Jesper said, Wylan nodded, the rest of the trip seemed like it took three years, probably because of Jesper chewing in his ear.
When they finally made it, everyone was so done. That's when Kaz realized, he was in Lij, he hadn't realized before because he was too distracted by Jesper. They checked in and then found their rooms, when Wylan saw it he threw up. There were bunk beds and the paint was all scraped off, Jesper screamed and hugged Kaz.
"Rat!" Jesper screamed, Kaz pushed him off.
"I'm pretty sure that's just dust." Kaz said, there was a pile of dust.
"Oh." Jesper said, this was going to be a long six months.
"Oh, there can be a cool montage, where we fix the camp." Wylan suggested, did he know that only happened in movies?
"There is no montage, we have to clean it up ourselves." Kaz said, Wylan frowned, Nina put her hand on Matthias' arm.
"Good luck cleaning up." Nina said and went outside, Wylan nodded and left too. Matthias raised his hand, Kaz nodded, he also left. Inej looked at Jesper, who was already leaving. Inej held his shoulder and pulled him back.
"You're not going anywhere." Inej said, Jesper complained a bunch, but eventually stayed. Jesper took out a broom from his luggage, Kaz and Inej just stared at him.
"Meet Bristles!" Jesper said and then demonstrated by cleaning the pile of dust he had mistaken as a rat.
"You can't be serious." Inej said, Jesper shrugged and handed the broom to Kaz.
"Take good care of Bristles. Clean up." Jesper said, why did Jesper bring a broom? "If something happened to Bristles, I..." Jesper got 'emotional', this was going to be the longest six months. Inej smiled, she cleaned up some of the random wrappers and stuff.
Jesper also sprayed some air freshner when they were finished, it actually wasn't that bad. Jesper brought blankets, pillows and bed sheets, Inej asked him why he didn't bring the entire apartment.
"It wouldn't fit in the car." Jesper said, Inej nudged him, he nudged Kaz. Nina came running in, she took a deep breath, then she turned to them. Oh, what happened? Did Matthias fall into the lake?
"Guys!" Nina shouted, Matthias and Wylan also came behind her, aw. "We have a rival chaperones group!"
"Nina, we're here as a punishment, we don't actually have to do our job." Kaz sighed, Inej glared at him.
"We do, these kids deserve good chaperones."
"That's what the other group is for."
"No, we have to do our best." She sighed, Nina shook her head.
"You guys don't understand, they were teasing us." Nina shouted, Matthias nodded and Wylan looked like he was about to cry.
"They said I was small." Wylan said, "And they said we will be the worst chaperones in history."
"They were right, not about the small thing though." Jesper whispered, maybe they could do their next heist on the rival chaperones' cabin.
"No, we are not in a competition. We just have to do our best and-" Inej started, Jesper groaned, everyone glared at him, he needed to stop doing that.
Today they were supposed to just fit in, from tomorrow they would have to start working. Kaz asked the camp counselor all the details, everything was seperate for them, except the eating area, that was joined with the rival chaperones. Nina and Matthias went to explore the camp, Wylan and Jesper went to the bonefire. Inej cuddled in her bed and Kaz was just sitting around in their cabin.
"So, how are you liking it?" Inej asked, "Also Jesper's blankets are so cozy."
"Pretty sure, those are actually Wylan's and he just stole them."
"Jesper has been stealing everything since that heist of yours. How are you liking it so far?"
"It seems fine." Kaz said, Inej sat up in the bed, her hair was open, she looked at him and smiled. He wished he was worth smiling, he wanted to be worth her. There was a knock on the door, a man came inside.
"Hello, fellow chaperones." His accent almost made Kaz laugh, "I'm Cas." This was going to get confusing really fast, Inej laughed.
"Hi, Cas, how nice of you to drop by, Cas." She said, she looked at Kaz every time she said Cas.
"Yes and you are?"
"Inej, nice to meet you, this is Kaz." Inej said while putting emphasis on Kaz. Cas glared at Kaz, like he would murder him in his sleep.
"How nice, it's dinner time." Cas said quickly and left, Inej turned to Kaz.
"Can you believe it? What a coincidence! I can already see Cas getting the degree. Anyways, let's go eat! I hope they have good food."
They went to the mess hall, everyone was there except Matthias and Nina, they didn't come the whole time.
"I'm starting to get worried, the sun is setting." Inej said, Wylan nodded, Jesper sighed.
"They're probably making o-" Jesper started, a big explosion cut him off.
"Sorry, bus backfired." A bus driver said, about a hundred kids got off the bus. They all were guided into their respective cabins by Jesper.
Everyone came back to their cabin, there was no sign of Nina and Matthias, what had they already gotten themselves into? They were probably doing a heist by themselves, everyone tried calling them, that's when they realized there were no signals there. There was no boundary of the summer camp, so they could be anywhere by now. They were not stupid, they knew when to turn back, never mind, they might be stupid.
.......................................................
It was about midnight (Kaz wouldn't know because there weren't any clocks or any technology) when their cabins door flew open, Nina and Matthias ran inside, they both seemed out of breath. Nina's pants were torn up from one side, Matthias shirt was half.
"Oh my Saints!" Inej hugged Nina, yeah, Matthias you can die in hell.
"Yeah, yeah, but those other chaperons are evil!" Nina shouted.
"Pure evil!" Matthias added.
"They sent us on the wrong path and Matthias believed them."
"What? You also believed them!" Matthias shouted, Jesper sighed, he mouthed 'this is starting again,'
"I believed them because you believed them, anyways, then we got chased by wolves, we barely made it. We have to take revenge!"
"On the wolves?" Wylan asked, Nina shook her head.
"On the idiot chaperones!" Nina shouted, yes, make sure to target Cas, he stole his name.
"Okay, Nina, calm down. I'm sure you guys just made a mistake." Inej said, that was more likely, they both shook their heads.
"Matthias, doesn't get lost. He was a druskelle, he's trained to overcome these situations." Nina said in her Fjerdan accent, Matthias seemed mildly annoyed.
"Yes, sure, but we should forgive them and move on, I'm sure this was not their intention." Inej argued, Matthias shook his head.
"Oh, it-"
"We can't let them walk all over us, Inej, we have to strike back." Jesper shouted and stood up.
"No, okay fine, but only if they do it again." Inej said, everyone nodded, everyone seemed convinced they would strike again. He should start planning now.
