Work Text:

"Do you believe in soulmates?"

The remaining coffee trickled out of the french press in Kevin's hand, his other gripping the handle of his mug - second cup of the morning already. Chestnut-coloured wood had already been stained with coffee of previous weeks, despite Javier having only just gotten around to fitting the new kitchen island.

The fluffy, animal-themed socks that Javier bought him two birthdays ago muffled the sounds of Kevin's footsteps as he sauntered over to the couch, placing his mug gently onto the coffee table before he flopped back onto the cushions. His adam's apple jutted out as his head fell back, eyes squeezed shut before staring at the ceiling.

He didn't know what was up with him, or even where the question had come from - the words had escaped his mouth before he could think about what they actually meant. He and Javier had only been dating for nine months, so maybe the concept of soulmates was a little too intense to be brought up at seven A.M. on a Tuesday morning.

From the other side of the couch, Javier raised an eyebrow, peering over at his boyfriend as he hesitated from taking another bite of his half-eaten breakfast - avocado toast that Kevin had insisted they make, and Javier was too stubborn to admit he secretly loved it.

"What do you mean?" he questioned, and Kevin tilted his head back upright to look back at him.

As if it were the most casual conversation starter in the world, Kevin simply shrugged and spoke again.

"Just that. Soulmates. Do you think they're real?"

He shifted across the couch, nudging Javier's arm with his head. The other man got the hint and lifted his arm without a second thought, letting Kevin slide in underneath and snuggle up into his side. Javier settled his arm back down, avocado toast still in hand.

"I don't know. What answer do you want?"

Kissing the top of Kevin's head - so as to signal that his response was not one of annoyance, but affection - Javier placed his unfinished breakfast back onto the plate sat on the coffee table in front of him and relaxed into his boyfriend's touch.

It was an honest enquiry; the original question was loaded, and Javier was never too good at deducing what people really meant through their tone alone.

"An honest one, preferably," Kevin fired off from beside him, his playful answer accompanied by a gentle laugh - the kind that had Javier falling in love all over again. Although, to be honest, every time Kevin laughed, Javier felt himself falling deeper and deeper. It was in this that Javier knew his love for Kevin was infinite.

"Kev, soulmates are stupid..."

Javier turned his face toward where Kevin had just looked up at him, chin resting on his chest and eyes searching his. His thumb was stroking Kevin's shoulder absentmindedly, and he watched as the other man's face rose and fell with the movements of his chest for a moment.

"...I love you on purpose."

Javier pressed a tender kiss to Kevin's lips, and felt his boyfriend smile into the contact. They would have to go into work at some point, but for now, they were home.
