Chapter 1: Freshman Year Interviews

Chapter Text

“Anne Boonchuy, how would you summarize your Freshman year?”

My Freshman year of high school was crazy. Honestly, I can’t think of many other words to describe it. Going into Freshman year, I don’t think I had much of an idea of what to expect. I didn’t even really look at my schedule until the first day. All year I really relied on my best friends to get through it, but I’m sure everyone did.
My first class was English, which was where I met my boyfriend. We dated off and on again for, well, all of high school, but that’s getting ahead of myself.
I had fun in a lot of classes, but then there were the ones I found challenging and frustrating. It helps to have a smart friend that can tutor you though. Most of my second semester was spent that way since Id let myself get distracted in a few classes. Also, shout out to Marcy, you are the only reason I passed English 1 and am graduating this year.
As a freshman my favorite class was definitely Guitar 1, next to general PE. PE was really unpopular among like everyone. I liked it though. It was one of the only times I got to actually talk to my friends during the school day. Also, while it was hot and sometimes miserable, it didn’t seem that bad compared to other things, especially when you had your friends by your side.
My least favorite class was Algebra. Algebra was difficult, but it gave me an excuse to hang out with my friends more, since they studied with me. Well, One of them did. My other friend was in the smart people math class. That’s how we joked about it.
My first Homecoming was pretty cool. The playlist sucked. There were a few good songs, but for the most part it wasn’t great. That didn’t really matter though, nothing was gonna keep me from having the time of my life that night. I wore this really pretty purple and faded white dress, it was really nice.
As far as after school activities, I’ve played tennis for, like ever. Ok, not forever, but I started just before middle school. I was devastated when I didn’t make the fall team. I did make the winter/spring team! And tryouts for the JV team for the following year, or the summer/fall team were in May that year. I was so excited to have made it.
One thing that I found super cool about high school was the independence. I didn’t have a teacher breathing down the back of my neck every second.
I was in awe with how much larger the high school was. Our middle school was already pretty big, I had no idea the high school could be bigger! Somehow there were even more classes, and even more rooms, and the hallways got even more confusing.
As for my life outside of school. I didn’t have a job. Well, I guess I didn’t. When your parents own a restaurant you kind of automatically have job. Outside of school was really the only time I had to hang out with my friends, so that’s where you’d find me on the weekends. The three of us always made a huge effort to go out of our way to see each other between classes, even if it was just a wave. We had lunch together and the first and last five minutes of gym class, but other than that it was aggressively waving at each other from down the hallway.
One of the best parts of my year was definitely holidays. We had spirit weeks, as we did every year, but people went all out in high school. It was kind of a game for us. See who could dress up more, or sometimes see who could find the most eccentric outfit. School uniforms are boring, so everyone went all out on spirit weeks.
A funny thing about high school was, I don’t think I had even met the principal freshman year. I didn’t meet my counselor. I met the nurse freshman year though. I remember, I broke my arm playing tennis after school in May.
I’m gonna be really honest here, freshman year was not the best year of high school for me. There was some friend drama that started with us finding new interests and making new friends and seriously dating people. Also, I was told going into high school that best part would be my freshman and senior year. I don’t know how true I find that. Freshman year was interesting. That’s how I’d summarize it, interesting.

“Sasha Waybright, describe am average day in the life of your freshman self”

Ok, my freshman self would wake up in the morning at about 6:15AM. From there I would get up and get dressed. I know a lot of people would lay there and hit snooze five times, but I didn’t really have that problem. Once my alarm went off I was up. Then again, I have become a really light sleeper.
I would brush my teeth, do my makeup and my hair. My favorite hairstyle at the time was a low messy bun or a messy braid but that was more sophomore era. As for makeup, I was obsessed with this broadway themed eyeshadow pallet. I never really put in the effort to cover up the scar on my face. I kinda learned to just own it.
After doing completing that it would be about 6:30, so I’d make sure my bag was packed. Basic school stuff, make sure my chrome book was charged, pencils were sharpened, and just that I had everything. Then, I would fill up a water bottle to last me throughout the day and my Mom or Dad would take me to school.
The time I got to school varies on which parent I was staying with that week, since they are split up. Usually I’d arrive around 6:40 though. 6:40 was the earliest you could possibly be there. I’d buy my breakfast from school and sit at the same table in the commons and do homework. Marcy and Anne, my best friends, would show up around 30-40 minutes later and we’d talk until school started.
We walked each other to our first hours, I was on the third floor they were on the second.
I had Algebra 1 first. I’m pretty sure my teacher hated me. We had some interesting interactions. I went to health class after that, which I didn’t find to hard. I knew a lot about human health prior to coming to high school.
Third hour was probably my favorite class freshman year. I had General PE. I had the same hour as my two besties, not the same teachers though. We would get to talk in the locker room before and after, and sometimes the classes combined.
4th hour was English 1, that was ok. Then I had lunch with Anne and Marcy. I bought my lunch everyday, just as I did with breakfast. I didn’t find school food to be to bad. It wasn’t good, but it was tolerable.
5th hour was physical science, where I would pass my girlfriend, at the time, in the hallway. We dated for a few months, it’s whatever.
Then I went back to the gym for individual PE. Which was like a fancy way of saying it wasn’t team sports. Finally I ended the school part of my day with US History.
After school I almost always went to something. Usually it was cheer. I was a Fall, Winter, and Spring JV cheerleader. It payed to have been in the middle school team every year. If I wasn’t going to cheer practice, I was either going to watch Anne’s tennis practice or Drama club. I joined Drama club in early January, having been pressured into it by my girlfriend, at the time. After we broke up in late January I kept going because I had signed up to be in a tech crew. I was on Costume and Makeup crew. I honestly did really like it though.
After whatever I stayed after school for that day was over, I usually rode home with Anne. Sometimes we went to her place, sometimes Marcy’s, and every once in a while one of mine.
Sleepovers were common, usually on Friday nights. I pretty much ended my day the way it begins. Unpacked my stuff, took down my hair, removed my makeup, and went to bed to do it all’s again the next day.
