Work Text:

It had just been sunny ten minutes ago, Matsui swears. He sighed, chin in hand, looking up at the gray sky as the rain came down all around him. He’s back just far enough on the engawa for nothing to splash on him, legs tucked up under himself. He let out yet another loud sigh, then leaned his head against the wooden beam beside him, frowning.

“You look dejected!”

Matsui turned to look inside the building, meeting Urashima’s gaze. He didn’t want to admit it, but…

“Well, I was… looking forward to our picnic,” he finally said, shoulders slumping. Urashima let out a little chuckle, then came and sat on his knees beside him, a bright smile adorning his face.

“It’s not a total lost cause, you know! We can always go on a picnic another time.” He leaned forward with his hand extended, rainwater dripping into his palm. Even with the dreary weather, Urashima always found something to smile about. It was positively endearing.

Come to think of it, there were a lot of things he found endearing about Urashima. He caught himself staring for a moment too long, eyes meeting the wakizashi's. Matsui was quick to pretend he wasn’t staring, turning to look back out at the rainclouds. Urashima had definitely noticed, and scooted a bit closer. He looked like he wanted to say something, but instead just searched Matsui’s face, grinning from ear to ear.

“What?”

“Nothing; I just like spending time with you.”

Matsui nudged him away, and Urashima laughed. That bright, cheery laugh he’d come to love. He found himself meeting Urashima’s eyes again, and Matsui felt his heart skip a beat.

“Urashima..”

“Mm?” Urashima gazed over at him, hugging his legs to his chest. Matsui felt his throat go dry, and he sat up, leaning toward the other boy. He searched for the words he so desperately wanted to say, but before he could get anything out, he was interrupted by a whistling sound coming from the room behind them.

“Ah!” Urashima jumped to his feet, and disappeared past the sliding door. Matsui somehow felt even more dejected than before, slumping back against the beam. He finally thought he had the courage to confess, and he was interrupted by a tea kettle of all things.

After a few moments of his companion’s absence, Matsui started to wonder if he had run off somewhere else, but then he heard the sound of footsteps heading back his way. Urashima appeared again, with his signature bright smile, a tray of food and tea in hand.

“I-I thought you hadn’t made anything for the picnic yet...?”

“Well… I got real excited, and got up extra early this morning to make it. Nagasone-nii-chan helped out.” He sat the tray down, then sat down next to Matsui. “I just had to wait for the water to boil. It’s not the picnic we had planned, but…”

Matsui couldn't help but smile. Urashima had prepared quite the impressive spread for the two of them, and even though the rain had come to try and foil their plans, Matsui was still happy like this. In fact, any time he got to spend around the wakizashi was something he had come to appreciate.

“Matsui?”

Matsui turned his attention back up to Urashima, who had moved a bit closer. Before Matsui had time to react, Urashima leaned in and kissed him. It was a chaste, but sweet kiss, Urashima's lips being somewhat rough against his own. He was left staring, dumbfounded, as the other boy smiled across at him.

“I like you too!”

Matsui sputtered, trying desperately to say anything in response, but every word had been stolen from him the moment their lips met. Urashima couldn’t help but laugh, reaching out to snake his fingers between Matsui's. “How did you..?” Matsui started, but was interrupted by another kiss, which left him sputtering even more.

“It was kind of… obvious?” Urashima admitted, stifling a laugh.

Matsui knew his face must have been bright red. He just stared across at the other boy, still at an absolute loss for words, but found he didn’t have to say anything as Urashima instead came closer, leaning against his shoulder. He squeezed the wakizashi’s hand, and the two of them got to chatting as they enjoyed their little picnic together on the engawa, much closer than before.
