    He squinted at the bright light of the narrow room. Next to him, screened by a curtain, someone moaned loudly.

    "What happened?" he asked Helen, his voice rasping.

    She picked up a plastic cup of water and arranged the straw near his lips. He drew on it too quickly and coughed. "Shit."

    "You tried to drink yourself to death," Helen said coolly, her eyes like daggers. She pushed the water towards his mouth again, and he obliged, taking another sip. "You'll be here overnight for observation, and then you get to go home."

    He pushed the straw out of his mouth with his tongue. "Okay."

    She put the cup down. "I need a break. I have some functions coming up at the restaurant that I've already postponed. I'd hoped you would be doing better by now, but I'm clearly not helping. So, you're going to have to look after yourself for a while."

    John fixed his eyes on the corner of the nurse's station in front of him.

    "Fine," he replied.
