When I'm Lying Awake At Night

Summary:

Wilbur and Tommy have to share a bed. Wilbur can't seem to sleep so close to the blond.

Just a cute thing where we only see Wilbur's feelings and nothing else.

Title taken from Title And Registration by Death Cab.

Notes:

3/11 songs off the album done

Work Text:

They both approached the bed, Tommy still complaining about the hotel's mistake and Wilbur just laughing as he tossed his shirt off and hopped beneath the heavy comforter. Tommy wasn't going to complain about sharing a bed with Wilbur as much as the fact the hotel still charged for a two bed room. Phil insisted they just accept it and not make an official complaint because it wasn't a huge deal.

"Are you sure this is ok? Because I am tired" Tommy asked for what felt like the millionth time that night, tired eyes analyzing the older man. Wilbur smiled, soft and comforting.

"Mhmm" he hummed, pulling back the covers and allowing the blond to slip effortlessly beneath them. He hit the pillow with a small huff, snuggling his face into it and slipping out of consciousness almost immediately.

Wilbur watched, taking the time to note every feature he could. Every line and curve and where every strand of hair fell. He couldn't help but think Tommy was beautiful like this, soft and peaceful. After a moment he let himself fall back against his own pillow, staring up at the plain beige ceiling.

His mind still drifted to images of Tommy, smiling at some Wilbur said, laughing at a joke or just like he was now. At ease. He could reach out and touch the man had he wanted to, but he remained on his side of the bed. Instead he stayed looking firmly at the ceiling, listening to Tommy's soft breaths and occasional sleep noises.

Someone like Tommy, he decided, was far too good for someone like him. Not that he was inherently bad, but despite his put together appearance he was a mess and Tommy just wasn't. He played things up on camera but he was one of the smartest, brightest and talented people Wilbur had ever met. How he was only 18 with his brilliant mind was beyond the elder.

There felt like something he was supposed to do or say. Something he should tell Tommy or at least say to himself out loud but the idea of it ever being out loud was scary. Still he thought, admitting it out loud was probably important. He sat up a bit as his mind continued down that road. Infact, it would probably feel pretty good to say. He glanced back down at Tommy, putting all his weight on one hand and looming over the man. It would feel great rolling off of his tongue he was sure.

"I um" he coughed a bit, speaking after a while of silence making his voice somewhat raw. It also helped his confidence that Tommy didn't show any sign of being disturbed. "Tommy I… I think I'm.. No" he stopped himself, lipping curling slightly as he scowled at his own thought process. "No, I know. I definitely know that, erm.. Yeah I like definitely" he didn't understand why it was so hard to say something like this when he knew no one would hear. He took a final deep breath.

"Tommy, I've been like, so in love with you, for such a long time and I'm sorry" he sighed after saying it, knowing in his heart that it didn't feel any better. "Maybe one day you'll be awake to hear it" he added, settling back onto his pillow and accepting the fact there would be no satisfaction in this. His heart practically stopped when skin met his, a hand coming and brushing his side as Tommy snuggled into him. He held his breath, wondering if the blonde had been awake after all.

After a few minutes he decided it was safe to assume he was just a sleep cuddler, and he could decide if it would be taking advantage of the situation to just let it happen and enjoy it. He didn't wanna wake Tommy up, he reasoned. So he would just have to let things be, which to him was a favorable outcome. It would certainly make it harder to sleep though. He just settled and let himself stare.

It wouldn't be his first sleepless night thinking of Tommy.
