Letterman Jacket

Summary:

Letterman jackets are a staple of cheesy high school romances.

(Aka, if no one else is going to write awkward fluff for these two, then I will, damn it!)

Work Text:

Steve (23:04)

robin where the fuck are you

Steve (23:04)

stop being gay w/ your gf and call me to let me know that your alive

Steve (23:05)

ROBIN IT IS 11 O CLOCK AND YOU HAVEN'T ANSWERED MY TEXTS IN THREE HOURS WHERE ARE YOU

Steve (23:06)

oh god you’re never going to let me live the fact that I’m acting like a full-blown mother down, are you

“Shit…” Robin said, scrolling through Steve’s texts to her over the last half an hour. “Vickie, I’m sorry, but I should probably get home. Steve is going crazy. You know how he is.”

Vickie replied, “Oh, right, yeah, of course.” After a pause, she added, “Could I, like, give you something?”

Robin furrowed her eyebrows, confused, but responded, “Okay?”

She couldn’t quite figure out what her girlfriend was pulling out of her bag, due to the fact that it was eleven at night and, therefore, quite dark outside. There were streetlights around, but they just so happened to be facing the opposite way to the two women, and they were standing right between them.

“I, uh, I know it’s kinda stupid but,” Vickie presented her with a letterman jacket, like the ones that jocks would wear, that was clearly far too big for either of the women, “I just thought that, well, varsity jackets are kind of a staple in cheesy high-school romances, and, I know we’re not exactly a ‘regular’” — she tried to do air quotes, but sort of failed due to the fact that she was still holding the jacket — “couple, but I thought it would be, like, nice, I guess?”

“Where’d you get this?”

“What?”

“Where’d you get this?” Robin repeated. “You’re not in any sports teams, as far as I’m aware.”

“Oh, it— it was my brothers,” Vickie clarified, “He graduated a few years back, so this is a little old now. He doesn’t live with us any more, and he left this, for some reason, so I just assumed he didn’t want it any more.”

After another moment of silence, Robin laughed slightly.

Vickie looked confused. “Uh… what?”

Robin cupped her girlfriend’s face in her hands, leaning down, and gently pressed their lips together (much unlike their first kiss together, which was an uncoordinated, inexperienced mess). Vickie dropped the jacket rather unceremoniously, leaving it to fall to the dirt-covered pavement, and, realising that her hands were no longer full, awkwardly put her hands on Robin’s back.

Robin pulled away, a massive, if slightly dorky (could that word even be used to describe a smile? Probably not, but Steve insisted that her grins were ‘dorky’ and Robin had become used to people describing anything about her that way over the years), smile on her face, and said, “I love it. Thank you.”

“I’m glad,” Vickie replied, leaning down and dusting off the jacket, “You should probably get going, though. I think I felt your phone buzz about fifteen times when we were kissing just then.”

She awkwardly handed the jacket to Robin, who took it with a grateful kiss on the cheek for her girlfriend.

Robin pulled on the jacket, only then realising how cold the night breeze had made her. Her smile widened and she held the jacket tight, like if she lost her hold on the sleeves for even one second it might fly away and be lost forever.

Robin (23:13)

alright calm your tits I’m alive

She got a reply almost immediately.

Steve (23:13)

Thank GOD
