As a lowly tarnished, you didn't have much going for you. You were confident and helped people during your travel of the lands between, but you didn't expect anything of importance to happen to you. After a few months of travelling and dying to trolls, Melina introduced you to the rountable hold after you proved your worth by bringing them various resources, most notably gaining respect from Sir Gideon.
Traveling to the hold to speak to Roderika, Gideon immediately found you. "I need you to eliminate Margit, Tarnished. He stands in our way of Godrick and the easiest obtainable great rune. Accomplish this, and you will be a true member of the Hold." Gideon handed you the route to Stormveil castle and you wondered how you ever missed it.
Setting out was a breeze, and was much nicer than the wilds of Caelid. You thought you'd explored all of Limgrave, but it was clear this place was much bigger than you thought. Jumping off Torrent you pulled out your greatsword, sauntering up to the opening at the end of the hallway. You glanced at the gold summon sign, deciding to ignore it now. You'd slain huge deformed birds and dogs in Caelid, surely whatever you were about to face was easier.
"Foul Tarnished, boldened with the flame of ambition.."
The deep, rumbling voice sounded like thunder in your ears, startling you as you watched the sky cloud over. You readied your greatsword, slowly spinning in a circle as you tried to find the source of the voice. Suddenly a grotesque, horned man appeared, his cracked tail sliding out from under his dirty robes and swiping your feet out from under you. You fell to the ground, your greatsword sliding from your hand and clattering to the ground far away from your reach.
"Someone must exstinguish thy flame.. Let it be Margit the Fell!"
Margit looked down at you as he placed his staff over your chest, ready to pierce you with it. As he slammed his staff down you rolled out of the way towards your beloved greatsword, picking it up and slamming it down on his tail. The action caused Margit to scream out in pain, stopping his staff in the process. You took advantage of this and climbed atop his back, ready to stab him and get this over with. He quickly threw you off, causing you to tumble close to the edge of the cliff. The already thin walkway had crumbled during your short fight, and you were grasping at anything to save you."I shall extinguish thy flame." Margit mumbled, kicking you off the edge for good.
This happened over and over again. Death after death you heard the same lines every time. But he couldn't extinguish your flame. You had a plan. Well, you thought you did at least. You spent a couple weeks training, practicing your sparring techniques with Melina until you felt ready. You'd switched out your slow greatsword for a faster rapier, hoping to outmatch him in speed. You walked into the fog door expecting to see his usual towering self, but you'd found something much different.
Margit had summoned what looked like a throne of gold light under him, sitting on it as he read a book. He didn't look up though it was obvious he knew you were there. You put your sword away, looking around like a paranoid animal as you stepped towards him.
"Tell me, Tarnished..are you literate?"
You raised an eyebrow, absolutely confused by this question. you'd been killed countless times by this guy, and all of a sudden he wants to know if you can read? You always woke up at the grace, so you decided to say fuck it and play along.
"I didn't really remember how to when i woke up, a friend of mine ended up teaching me."
Margit looked up at you after this response, his eyes boreing into your soul as he studied your figure.
"Was it Gideon?"
"Gi- How do you know Gideon??" You stumbled over your words, caught off guard by his question once more. How could he have known this?
"You have been gone for some weeks, Tarnished. You are the only one that has continued to come back, and so i went to look for you." Margit looked back down at his book, acting so casually despite admitting to stalking you and your friends.
"I just want to go in and kill Godrick, can we settle our differences so i can get the great rune?" You were so tired of not making any progress at this point, you just wanted something to work. He closed his book and thought about it for what seemed like an age until he slowly stood up, the spectral throne dissolving in the wind.
"Yes, I suppose we can make a deal. On one condition though; I go with you."
