Work Text:

She was standing still in the snow watching Gordon Ford stare at her from the billboard, and when she felt a shadow behind her approach, she turned around.

She saw him, standing still looking at her, wearing a black coat over his usual black suit, looking extremely dapper and cold. He watched her and held his coat tightly to his chest.

“You shouldn’t be here,” said Midge as soon as she caught her breath to speak in the storm

“Neither should you…I didn’t realize the storm, I…I shouldn’t have left you alone. It’s dangerous..”

“Well, I can take care of myself if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“Midge, Christ, come on. No trains are running tonight and I’m not going to leave you in a subway station with four bums.”

Midge watched him approach, stood still as soon as he took off his coat and placed it on both their heads. Now they were incredibly close, and she looked up at him. Their gazes met, and in that moment the snow no longer seemed so cold.

“You’ll freeze to death like this.”

He huffed and gave a lopsided smile “It’s likely, but I like to alter the atmosphere for you. Come on, hold on to me.”

Midge wrapped her arm around Lenny’s body. He, with his height and long arms, managed to hold the coat over both their heads, and they began to walk in silence. About halfway there, a very strong gust of wind blew, and Lenny stood in front of Midge, holding her with both arms to protect her.

Midge was breathless for a moment. His coat was now almost completely covering him, and she remained leaning against his chest while he held her firmly, taking her under a doorway for momentary shelter. Only then did Midge look up and her hands wandered to the lapels of his jacket, slowly grasping it.

Lenny looked at her with his usual gaze. They were extremely close, and it was becoming impossible to breathe….

“Sorry…I’m sorry. I….I let you down…”

Midge spoke in a low, trembling voice. She felt tears stinging her eyes. Lenny’s hand instinctively went to rest on her cheek, his thumb ready to welcome the tear that would roll down her cheek shortly.

“You haven’t failed me. You would only fail me if you stopped, but no more hiding now, promise?” Midge nodded and the tear dropped onto Lenny’s thumb, which promptly chased it away with a caress.

Their gazes were completely lost in each other now, both of their hearts turning to hammers in their chests.

“Can you ever forgive me?”

Midge looked at him questioningly for a second, not understanding what he was referring to. Was it the black bag in the bathroom? The argument they had just had?

Lenny bit his lip but did not look away from her, seeing her face contort in confusion.

“I…it’s totally unfair how much I want to kiss you now…and it’s totally unfair how you can be so out of my league, Midge…” He spoke in a low voice, his head naturally shaking in denial

He was very, very dangerously close now. Midge smiled and stood up on tiptoe, coming to within an inch of his lips to look into his eyes again and say, “Don’t plan. Don’t think. Just..kiss me.”

Their lips touched slowly at first, and then opened, tongues meeting between them. It was intense, slow, rich with desire, and absolutely suggestive to watch outside. That is, if ever anyone else was insane enough to be outside in the blizzard.

But apparently the activity that a kiss can generate warms the bodies, and after a while they broke away with smiles.

“Okay, I promise I didn’t plan this….but now we absolutely must get to my very blue room because I swear I do not want to go in there without you.”

Midge smiled and allowed herself to be wrapped in Lenny’s coat again before they resumed their walk, occasionally exchanging a kiss just to remind each other that it was about to happen again. Against all odds, they were going back to that room for the last time, and this time Midge had no intention of leaving before the next morning.
