human and divine

Summary:

During his mission to steal the Electro Archon's gnosis for himself, Scaramouche remembered a past he had thought he had forgotten about.

Work Text:

"Now go do your tasks, as assigned." his fatui soldiers had quickly disappeared from his sight, leaving the fatui harbinger alone with his thoughts.

He stood atop the cliff, his view of the Inazuma City was as clear as day. He would be lying if he said he didn't feel at peace for once. Other than that, he was back in the nation where he once had a home to return to, where he used to have someone to return to.

"So you wanted to bring me here..?"

The harbinger froze in his spot, eyes widening by a minuscule bit. Such a familiar voice.. He knew that it was definitely from a distant memory of his, seeing as there are literally nobody else around him.

"The shrine looks so majestic from here, this is a perfect spot for watching the sunset, don't you agree so..?"

Ah...

Kunikuzushi lacked a heart, and empty void was instead in its place, but his chest felt even more hollow after realising who the voice belonged to. It was a far distant memory, long before he.. Kunikuzushi stopped himself there, before he could let any sort of regret and guilt start building up within his being. Scaramouche had left with no qualms or second thoughts, why would he let there be now?

"Kuniku.." the voice started once more. "Please don't tell me you're leaving once and for all?"

Kunikuzushi made up his mind then and there that Scaramouche wishes to visit her. After letting such a memory be forgotten, the least he could do is search for her in this nation. Right?

Just as he was about to start his journey, he remembered that there was actually no point in doing so.

Because it was all centuries ago.

When he, a prototype of puppet who possess powers similar to the electro archon—in simpler words, an immortal, had fallen in love with a human. The last time he had seen her was actually the last time he could ever do that again. Scaramouche sighed. At this point in the world, she was probably already one with nature.

A ghost of a smile appeared in his lips. [Y/N] would have loved that anyways.

"Despite how everything ended between you and her, you still refused to see her?" Kunikuzushi argued with himself.

As much as Scaramouche refused to, it doesn't hurt to pay a visit right?

Indeed.

Scaramouche found himself in front a house at a village in Yashiori Island. He remembered how she used to reside in this village before she fled to the city where they shared their first encounter. Despite knowing how she resided in Narukami Island before his departure, Kunikuzushi thought perhaps in his last days she had returned to Yashiori, maybe to forget the city where she had found love.

"Are you looking for someone inside?"

Scaramouche turned around, glaring at the stranger for sneaking up on him.

"Sorry for disturbing your peace, but I'm afraid that this house had been abandoned many years ago."

Abandoned? Years ago?

Surely he had heard wrongly. This house belonged to his.. Scaramouche's scowl remained despite the surprise he felt from the stranger's words.

"If you're looking for the resident, maybe you can search for them back in the Inamuza City, some of the more luckier residents have made it there. So you can try your luck there."

Kunikuzushi felt a clench in his chest, where the empty void was at. Kunikuzushi really hoped that perhaps it was his love. But Scaramouche is no fool. He doubted the fact that she could live this long, after all, she is a human. And he? He is divine.

"Sir?" the stranger called out to him, seeing how deep he was in a daze.

"It is futile to search for them there." Scaramouche sighed, unusual softness was laced in his tone.

Scaramouche is glad. He is glad that Kunikuzushi had nothing to say in return, showing that Scaramouche was right.

"Will you promise to be back?"

She is human and I— we, we are divine. And she was once a human in love with a divine being. And we are a divine being in love with a human who has been gone since long ago.

"Maybe not in the near future, but I promise to go back to you at some point."

"Then I'll.. continue waiting for you until then!"

'A shame.' Scaramouche thought to himself, a look of longing was evident on his face.

'Almost five centuries later, and I only returned to you now.'
